FELLOWSHIP LUNCH This takes place on the first Thursday of each month in the Vil-lage Hall. All ages are welcome and for £3.50 you will receive a hot meal, with sweet and cheese. You can just turn up, but it would help the organisers if you could let them know that you plan to attend. The people to contact are Michelle Boddy on 868or Doreen Por-ter on They are keen to welcome more people to the lunches.

GOOD COMPANIONS Swinderby Good Companions Club promotes social interaction and friendship for the senior citizens of the village. Regular monthly meetings are held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on the second Thursday of every month. Games are played and afternoon tea is served by volunteer hostesses. Outings are organised during the year along with an annual fund raising garden party.

BOWLS CLUB The bowls club meet during the summer months at the bowling green (behind the village hall.) I have been informed that sadly member numbers are down this year and as such the club is beginning to struggle. It would be a shame if we lost this club in the village. They are on the look out for new members to go along for fun and friend-ship. Have you been thinking of joining for a while, would you like to see what it is all about and have a try? No experience necessary. No one too old or too young!! Everyone welcome.

THE PLOUGH GOLF SOCIETY Open to all and anyone can join. Playing on the last Fri-day of the month. Contact Adam

CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup.

Church News Coffee Stop Mondays 10.30 – 12.00 please come along and enjoy a coffee and a chat. Take a moment to visit our lovely Grade II* Church. Churchyard Tidy-Up Mornings Saturday 26th August from 10.00 please come and lend a hand to keep our churchyard looking neat and tidy.

Services (9:30am)

When there is a 5th Sunday in the month there will be a group service at 10:30am on a rota basis around the group. Dear All Working with representatives from the Primary School, Village Hall and Parish Council to explore ways in which we can enable the village to come together we would like to invite you to join with us for a Harvest Thanksgiving. This will take place firstly, at Church with a short service, at which we are hoping the school will participate. Then onto the Village Hall for a traditional Harvest Supper. Obviously, we will be selling tickets for the supper at a reasonable cost.

Closer to the event we will be able to give you exact details, but please put the evening of Friday 15th September 2017 in your diary. At the moment we are working with the idea of the service in Church at 18.30, with the supper in the village hall at 19.30. Proceeds will go to cover any costs and a nominated charity. As I said more details will be circulated ASAP, but I hope as many people can come together to make this a wonderful evening in the life of the Village. As ever, Andrew

NOTES FROM A SMALL PARISH - JULY 2017

Public Forum As usual the meeting opened with the public forum and we had quite a few concerned people at the meeting this month. First, a parishioner commented that there was now no direct bus to Newark or that there was no bus link between Swinderby and Collingham where there is a direct bus service to Newark. She asked if the PC could make enquiries and get back to her. We said we would look into it. UPDATE Since the meeting the PC have been made aware of the The Bus Services Act 2017. Essentially an enabling act, it also received Royal Assent during April 2017. Broadly speaking this act covers three elements: franchising, enhanced partnerships and open data and is being widely heralded as an opportunity to improve bus services for the benefit of all passengers. But what does this mean for people living in remote and rural areas? There is a view that rural areas could benefit from this Act if local authorities use their franchise agreements to require operators to deliver services on routes which, while not profitable, are very much needed by those communities. The PC will look into this further. Secondly, we were asked if we were aware that an appeal had been lodged against the planning application which has been refused by NKDC to build 9 houses on the field adjacent to the Playing Field on Station Road. We were aware of it and discussed it as part of the agenda and resolved to reiterated our objections. Now, we're not allowed to re-list our objections as the planning department already have those and the inspector will look at them as part of the appeal BUT what we can do is write to them saying we STILL object to the development on the grounds that we have already mentioned. Next was a comment that the Village Hall car park was becoming overgrown with weeds. This was passed to Cllr Hodgson who is also the Chair of the Village Hall committee who said that the weeds had just recently been sprayed and that they should be dying off soon (they are). And finally, we had a visit from two members of the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust who were out and about in the area meeting people and talking to them about access to NHS services. They would be very interested to hear your comments about access to various NHS services. As such they have left some leaflets in the Village Hall which you can take away and provide some feedback to them. Co-option of a new Parish Councillor As I mentioned in last month’s report, the PC has had an opening for a new councillor for some time now and we asked if anyone was interested in joining. Well our newest Parish Councillor is Mr Jonathan Gagg. Here he is in his own words “I first moved to Swinderby in 1976 as a one-year old and lived here until 1997. In the years following I emigrated to Australia and set up in business contracting to cotton farms in the Australian Outback, with clients all along the Murray River from Goondiwindi down to Broken Hill. I returned to the UK in 2003 and my wife and I moved back to Swinderby in 2010, when we were expecting our little girl Alex. Alex has grown up in the village, attending both the pre-school and now the primary school where she is in year 2. As a family, we

15

make use of the village amenities such as the park, village hall and the pub and are lucky to have good friends in the village. I am now employed as an Engineering and IT Director of a cold storage company with sites across the country. I was delighted to be asked to join the Parish Council as I have an interest in village matters and will work hard to maintain the character of Swinderby.” And we look forward to working with you as well. Village Care Drivers Needed As you may be aware, there are volunteers in the village that will take you to the medical centres in Bassingham, the doctor's or dentist's in Collingham or to a local hospital for a small arranged fee. If you are unable to drive and your visit doesn't warrant an ambulance then the village care drivers are a lifeline. However, they are now short of volunteer drivers and are looking for people who have their own vehicle and can spare a few hours a week. If you feel you can help, please contact the Village Care coordinator whose details can be found in this copy of the Link Up. New Road Sign Cow Lane Now, not many people know this but Cow Lane is actually a two-way road. I was asked the other day if we could get a two-way traffic sign to put at the village end of the road. The reason he said that was, he frequently came into the village from Cow Lane (not from the A46 I might add, that bit is one-way) and being met by vehicles on his side of the road. He said that the oncoming drivers were not aware that there was an entrance onto Cow Lane and therefore thought it was a one-way road and there was the potential for an accident. The road is also very narrow and provides little space for two cars to pass each other. The Parish Clerk has contacted the Highways Department for a response. Broken sewage pipe on Bullpit Lane Sometime last month, a contractor working on the Kisimul construction site drove over and fractured a sewage pipe. This meant that a tanker was needed to intercept the sewage at the Produce World site and transport it to Collingham. In response to that we received a letter from the Collingham Parish Council concerned that the issue with the Moor Lane sewer system be resolved and sufficient additional capacity should be added especially given that planning for 120 houses and sheltered accommodation had been applied for. The PC decided that we should also write something similar to NKDC (and copied to Bloombridge) about our comments regarding sewage, electricity supply and other infrastructure issues (e.g. did you know British Gas are installing a gas supply pipe to the IRC at Morton Hall?) Next meetings The dates for your diaries are 31

st of July (this is technically

August's meeting), 4th of September, 2

nd of October, 6

th of November and the 4

th of

December. Cllr Bob Crozier Vice Chair Swinderby PC

Swinderby All Saints Primary School

As the school year draws to a close it is good to reflect on all the fantastic events and activities that the children have been

involved in this year- hopefully some of which you will have read of through the Link Up magazine. In the last few weeks of term the school has received notification of excellent SAT results that are above national average in all areas. Well done to the Year 6’s! The annual Sports Day also took place where a great sense of community was felt and the kindness and compassion of the older children towards the younger ones was commented upon. Last week the children took part in two concert performances where they were able to showcase a variety of songs and dances – much to the delight of the audiences and the school year was brought to a close by the ‘infamous Leaver’s Assembly’ where the theme this year was ‘Swinderby Bake off.’ The school would like to wish its pupils, parents and staff a wonderful summer break and every success to its pupils and staff who are moving on. To those returning we look forward to another happy, fun year starting in September.

YEAR 2 SWINDERBY PRIMARY SCHOOL

This is the final newsletter page for Year 2 at Swinderby School in 2016/2017. The children have all grown in confidence over the year and flourished. I am so proud of them all. We had an exciting day last Monday when we went to North Kesteven Sports Centre for the NEST Athletics event. We joined other Year 2 pupils from the local primary schools in our group (North Scarle, Eagle and Thorpe) and the children were in mixed teams. They took part in a number of activities such as balance bikes, golf, javelin and rolling a ball to hit a target to name a few. Great fun was had by all. The first three teams with the most points won a medal and all children received a certificate for their fantastic efforts.

During the afternoon we had our annual sports day with events such as running, bean-bag, egg and spoon and sack race. The children were great sportsmen and women regardless of the position they finished in. Well done! This week we have performed our Summer Concert to parents with Year 2 singing many songs and playing instruments. There is no end to their talents! Next week we have a pirate day to look forward to on Monday where we will be dressing up as pirates and linking with Class 1 for some pirate activities. Mrs Lucas
