Congratulations to Urban Prep Academy and our AIM High seniors for all being accepted into college!

Kudos to their mentoring organizations McDermott, Will & Emery, Neiger Design, Seyfarth Shaw and Towers Watson. Urban Prep was featured on ABC with Diane Sawyer. 3 of the 5 students interviewed were AIM High students (Marlon, Ahmad and Milan!)

Event Recap: Job Shadowing

• 11th and 12th graders participated in a DiSC personality workshop at Companies That Care…

DiSC

D = Dominance (6 students)

i = Influence (5 students)

S = Steadiness

C = Conscientiousness (3 students)

April 6th Cultural Event


Cultural Event- April 6th• Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

– 5pm: Dinner @ GracePlace (637 S. Dearborn)

– 7:30pm: Billy Elliot @ The Oriental Theater (24 W. Randolph)

– 10:15pm: show ends

• At 6:45pm, we will walk as a group from dinner to the theater (15 min. walk). You are welcome to drive or cab, but not with your mentee.

• Tickets will be handed out at the dinner. If you plan to only attend the play, please send us a note and we will leave your ticket for you at the theater.

• Mentors and students will be seated together.


Getting There

• Metered street parking near dinner @ GracePlace. If you leave your car there the whole night, don’t forget to put more money in the meter on the way to the theater.

• Discounted parking (w/ stub) at theater garage, entrance at 20 W. Randolph

• Students must walk from dinner to theater. (<1 mile, 15-20 min walk through downtown!)

• Short walk from El lines, short cab from Metra

Registration

• This is an event with limited tickets, so we ask you to register in advance. One mentor per student is guaranteed a ticket. Additional mentors are welcome on a first come, first serve basis and are asked to submit payment for the additional dinner and ticket. ($75, or $30 for dinner only, $45 for ticket only)

• Please ensure at least 1 mentor from your team registers.

• Currently about 80 tickets are accounted for. We have 115 allotted. Please register at your earliest convenience so we can plan accordingly.

• Registration open now at www.companies-that-care.org/register. Register by 3/19 to guarantee yourself a ticket.


Evaluations + Check-in Meetings


Evaluating Your Student

• In early spring, students are evaluated on their participation in AIM High. Students must be “on track” to attend summer opportunities such as internships and college bus tours.

• Students are evaluated on:– Attendance at after school meetings and Touchpoint events– Frequency of communication with mentors– Engagement with mentors and program staff

• If you have not already done so, please evaluate your student’s engagement by taking this 4-minute survey by 3/19: http://tinyurl.com/yjqzudw

• Please ensure at least one mentor per team takes the survey.


Meetings with Marci

• Each spring, Marci meets in-person with each mentoring organization.

• Objectives: – Receive feedback about program- what’s working, what’s

not– Insights about students– Ideas for programs– Recommending other mentoring organizations– Q+A

• Each mentor coordinator will be contacted to set up a convenient meeting time. Meetings will take place in late winter/early spring.

• All mentors are encouraged to attend.


Bowling Fundraiser


Why A Fundraiser?

• $5000/student

100% - 30% from student sponsors- 26% from foundations____________________ = 44% remaining to raise


Bowling Fundraiser• When: Sunday, April 25th, 2:00-

5:00pm

• Where: Bluebird Lanes (www.bluebirdlanes.com), 3900 West Columbus Ave. Southwest side of city (87th and Pulaski).

• Who: Mentors, Students, Mentors’ Families, Students’ Families

• New this year: Buses will leave from schools at 1pm.

• Pricing: Free for 1 student, 1 student friend/family, 1 mentor per team. Additional $25/person (bowling, shoes, food)


Bowling Fundraiser

• Goal: $45,000– Each team (mentors + student) raises $1000. All funds go

directly towards sustaining, improving and expanding AIM High

– Each team that reaches goal, student receives $100 shopping spree for clothes for college visits.

Bowling Fundraiser -- Contests14 days until 1st Contest ends!!

• We will have three contests to recognize leading teams during each contest period.

• Contest Periods:– Now - March 30– March 31- April 12– April 13 - April 23

• Winners of the first contest will be recognized at the April 6th cultural event. Northern Trust Team for Marquis and Taylon are currently in the lead!
