Welcome to our spring programme, full of amazing music, comedy, theatre,

film, talks, family events and much more, all running from January – April

2018. We are delighted to offer another exciting programme of events with

something for everyone to enjoy. During the day our café is open and serving

a range of delights, and our pre-show meals offer a great start to any

event (see the opposite page for details). Our friendly volunteers, intimate

performance space, and award-winning programme make every event an

extra special experience, and we look forward to welcoming you to some

inspirational arts and entertainment this spring, all at Shoreham’s award-

winning, community run arts venue.

On top of all of this, I’m very pleased to introduce you to our new

Arts Portal. Taking place on the third Saturday of each month, these

professional development sessions will introduce participants to key skills

and working practices across a wide range of disciplines within the arts.

Through these we’re aiming to enable local artists, musicians, and arts

practitioners to open the door to their chosen profession. The Arts Portal

will also provide an excellent opportunity to connect with a wide range of

creative professionals. Keep your eyes on the website for the details of

each session.

THE PRODUCERS

The biggest joy of The Producers is the inimitable,

incomparable Zero Mostel as loveable scoundrel

Max – a masterpiece of extravagant desperation and

irrepressibility. His perfect foil is Gene Wilder as

uptight accountant Leo Bloom, a pale wistful bundle of nerves who carries

a scrap of his baby blanket for emotional security. Together they find the

worst play in the world, raise a million dollars to produce it for a fraction

and when it quickly closes no one expects their money back. Their fictional

musical ‘Springtime For Hitler’ is unforgettable. Directed by Mel Brooks.

Open to Film Club members and guests only (£5 per guest). Duration 88 mins.

Our café is open 10am – 4.30pm,

Mondays to Saturdays, serving

JULIE FOWLIS

“Fowlis’s ascent to international stardom, putting Gaelic folk on the world music map, is evidence that a sublime voice transcends language and culture” ~ The Guardian

Julie Fowlis is a multi-award winning Gaelic singer whose ‘crystalline’ and

‘intoxicating’ vocals have enchanted audiences worldwide.

Firmly established as a world leading artist, Julie effortlessly moves

between genres and styles. She will forever be known as the singing voice

of Merida, the female protagonist in the award-winning Disney-Pixar movie

‘Brave’. During an impressive career with multiple awards and accolades,

Julie has until now sung primarily in Scottish Gaelic. Her forthcoming

album ‘alterum’ marks a change. Julie not only sings in English for the first

time on one of her own albums, but also offers a beautiful Galician song

‘Camariñas’, the result of a minority-language collaborative project.

Julie is a warm and engaging live performer; her performance at

Ropetackle will be a special treat and a welcome return following her sold-

out show in 2014.

AN EVENING WITH GWILYM SIMCOCK & YURI GOLOUBEV

“The interplay between the two is like musical telepathy.” ~ Observer

Gwilym Simcock and Yuri Goloubev

have long been fascinated by the

expressive possibilities of their duo

which started in 2008, at the Musica

Sulle Bocche festival in Sardinia to instant acclaim.

Together they navigate a route through jazz,

contemporary classical and chamber music

incorporating free improvisations and elements of

European music into both jazz standards and their own

original pieces. A concert full of experimental risk taking

and intriguing interpretations of familiar pieces.

This event will be presented ‘cabaret style’ and will include a buffet meal prepared by renowned chef Jaq Brewer.

8pm: Claire Martin interviews Gwilym about his astonishing musical career and

audience to follow.

8.45-9.30pm: Buffet food from our guest chef Jaq Brewer (full menu coming soon).

PIANO WORKSHOP

Techniques, tips and advice on how to fast-track your skills

on the instrument to the next level. Presented by Elliot

Galvin who performs with his trio later this evening.

ELLIOT GALVIN TRIO 7pm – 7.30pm: Q&A 8pm: Main Show

Elliot Galvin is one of the

rising stars of UK jazz. A

superbly gifted composer and pianist, whose maverick

imagination and magpie like ability to blend a disparate

world of influences into his own unique musical vision has seen him

compared to Django Bates, although in truth he sounds like no one except

himself. From de-constructing standards to creating his own mirco-tonal

melodica, Galvin’s music is both playful and deadly serious, drawing on a

wide range of influences from Keith Jarrett to Stravinsky, Ligetti, Deerhof

and the Beatles as well as the films of David Lynch, the Dada movement

and the literature of James Joyce. Live he is utterly captivating, bringing a

powerful sense of purpose to everything that he plays, and while his music

is playful, he never allows the humour to sidetrack from the brilliance of

his band or the seriousness of his intent. And whether swinging their way

through a Sonny Clark tune, de-constructing a hoary standard, or getting

funky on a melodica, the Elliot Galvin Trio never forget that jazz is the art

of communication – with each other and with the audience.

BASS WORKSHOP

Techniques, tips and advice on how to fast-track your skills

on the is instrument to the next level. Presented by bassist,

bandleader and producer Laurence Cottle. Laurence will be

appearing with Pee Wee Ellis in the evening.

PEE WEE ELLIS ‘FUNK ASSEMBLY’

The architect of James Brown’s era-

defining soul classics of the late 60s,

saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis played on

many of James Brown’s greatest hits

in the 60s and 70s, and even served as his long-term band director. Playing

many different saxophones, he became most famous for his baritone and

alto work. Pee Wee joined James Brown in 1965 and soon came up with the

first pure hardcore funk hit ‘Cold Sweat’, followed by 26 others that defined

what we think of as funk to this day. Pee Wee has even been called ‘the man

who invented funk!’

His effect on music was huge, leading directly to George Clinton, Sly Stone

and, in a circular twist, Miles Davis’ 70s work. By 1970 Pee Wee worked as

arranger and musical director for CTI-Kudu records, the most popular jazz

label of the 70s. He worked with Esther Phillips as well as George Benson,

Hank Crawford and dozens of other CTI artists.

BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH – THE MUSIC OF CHRIS MCGREGOR

7pm – 7.30pm: Q&A | 8pm: Main Show

The music has the infectious and distinctive township highlife sound,

the product of the cross-pollination of jazz and African dance rhythms. It

resembles a mixture of the hard-driving blues of Charles Mingus and the

wild experimentalism of Sun Ra, but retains a unique feel due to the South

African influences and the intelligent arrangements. South African pianist

McGregor made an immeasurable contribution to British and European

jazz in the 60s and 70s with his Blue Notes, a group of black South African

jazz musicians whom the white bandleader hand-picked after hearing them

perform at the 1962 Johannesburg Jazz Festival. Like fellow South African

jazz musicians Dollar Brand and Hugh Masekela, they understood that

the only way they could play freely was by escaping the oppressive social

and political climate of their home country. Several years after arriving in

London with the Blue Notes, McGregor also assembled the Brotherhood Of

Breath, an ambitious avant-garde big band which incorporated members of

the Blue Notes, along with the best of Great Britain’s young jazz musicians.

SMITTY’S BIG FOUR FEAT. JOE STILGOE

7pm – 7.30pm: Q&A | 8pm: Main Show

The Big Four are the kid brother of

the Kansas Smitty’s House Band

and were born three years ago in the

belly of Waterloo’s cavernous vaults.

Since its inception, the band has

taken on a trajectory independent

from the House Band’s. Their

infectious beat has raised people

up out of their seats from Shoreditch House to The Hackney Empire,

with small group interpretations of songs by their favourite ragtime and

jazz masters: Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Sidney Bechet and Django

Reinhardt. The Big Four’s unique combination of trumpet, soprano sax/

clarinet, guitar and bass, differs from traditional Dixieland groups by the

omission of drums and piano. This streamlined formation allows the band

to tightly navigate while maintaining the melodic integrity of the canon.

The band is made up of Pete Horsfall, Giacomo Smith, Dave Archer, and

Ferg Ireland. Joe Stilgoe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist

and songwriter with a rich musical heritage (his father is lyricist and

entertainer Richard; his mother the opera singer Annabel Hunt). His

live shows are a mixture of virtuosic musicianship and breath-taking

theatricality, combining on the spot improvisation and the quickest of wits.

LUNASA ‘…state-of-the-art Irish music as aggressively infectious as you’ll ever hear.’ Dirty Linen (2000)

Lúnasa celebrates its twentieth anniversary in 2017 as one of the most

influential bands in the history of Irish traditional music. Two decades

ago they ascended to the forefront of contemporary Irish music, and

there they’ve remained, a leading voice in the genre and the standard

against which others are compared.

Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god

Lugh, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music

dream team” has proven its mettle time and again over the years. The

band has sold over a quarter of a million records, performed at more

than 2,000 shows across 36 countries, and collaborated with many

notable artists outside the tradition.

With a new album set for 2017 and a robust touring schedule to match,

Lúnasa continues to set the standard and will lead the way for decades

to come.

This will be a special evening, to be sure!

SAM OUTLAW ‘Beyond great songwriting’ – Ryan Adams

Since the release of his 2015 debut Angeleno,

Outlaw remains one of LA’s only modern country

singers to earn international acclaim. With his

follow-up Tenderheart he shows an impressive

refinement of his artistic identity. Sonically,

the album further elaborates Outlaw’s “SoCal Country” sound: a sun-

bleached, Baja-influenced twang that deftly points to country’s neo-

traditionalists and LA’s legendary singer-songwriters. Thematically

Tenderheart is a thesis on self-discovery and the power of love, cynicism

comes easy, but having a soft heart takes real guts. This is sure to be an

amazing performance.

TONY MCMANUS

“The best Celtic guitarist in the world” ~ John Renbourn

To find a voice on so ubiquitous

an instrument as the acoustic

guitar is quite an achievement: to

do so within a centuries old idiom

where the instrument has no real

history is truly remarkable. Scots

born and now Canada based, Tony McManus is recognised as the world’s

leading guitarist in Celtic music. From an early age, his twin obsessions

of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce

a startlingly original approach to this ancient art. In Tony’s hands, the

emotions of Celtic music are beautifully realised through guitar, from the

driving energy of a reel to the timeless atmosphere of a lament – each

finds an authentic voice through his interpretation. Easily one of the most

original musicians to emerge in recent years, this will be a very special

concert from a hugely gifted artist.

ANGELA BARNES

On November 9th 2016, two momentous things

happened to Angela, which have deeply affected

her. Donald Trump won the US election and she

turned 40. Now, Angela is in no rush to join the

ranks of middle aged; she’s only just getting

started. She didn’t become a comedian until 33,

learnt to swim when she was 37, fell in love at 38

and passed her driving test at 39. Why the hurry? She is un-pensioned,

un-married, un-mortgaged and a fully paid-up member of the Peter Pan

generation. But what happens when the choices you make aren’t your

choice anymore? Does her body have different ideas about the future?

SON OF TOWN HALL “Unique and beautiful… unforgettable.” ~ Phil Collins

Imagine if Simon and Garfunkel were lost at sea,

salt in their beards, wind at their backs and whiskey

in their bottles. This is the sonic world which is

conjured up by Son of Town Hall. The project

is the brain-child of London-based producer/

multi-instrumentalist Ben Parker, and US-based

songwriter/guitarist/author David Berkeley who met whilst sailing across

the Atlantic on a junk-raft (called Son of Town Hall). Not surprisingly, their

Ropetackle debut promises meditations about the sea and songs that beg

you to sing along. Complete with Victorian Era outfits, Son of Town Hall will

leave you transformed, with your heart full of laughter and tears, drunk on

Something different. Mike’s special guest is a piano player,

the superb Craig Milverton. With his virtuoso ability and

comprehensive knowledge of the entire jazz spectrum, Craig is one of the

country’s leading pianists. He has accompanied such star vocalists as Stacey

Kent and Tina May and is regularly called upon to back visiting American

soloists at festivals and venues across the country including Scott Hamilton,

Ken Peplowski and Warren Vache. He is also a fan of two pianos at once – an

unusual combination, but a concept that has been championed from time to

time, particularly by Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock (whom Mike Hatchard

once had the privilege of playing alongside). So a quartet featuring twice

the usual number of pianists – we guarantee the ivories will be more than

“An unbeatable live gig” ~The Arts Desk

Powerhouse Latin, jazz, and funk

seven-piece J-Sonics have been

wowing audiences with their impressive

musicianship and infectious on-stage

chemistry for the last five years. After their roof-raising

Ropetackle debut at last years South Coast Jazz Festival, we

couldn’t resist bringing them back. Together they’ve taken

the UK by storm with their intoxicating mix of Latin, Brazilian

and Afro-beat classics, plus their own groove-laden originals.

J-Sonics are a dazzling live band not to be missed.

EZIO

“Easily one of the UK’s best live bands”. The Guardian

Undoubtedly one of the best live acts from the UK, Ezio

have vowed that there will be no set lists, so expect

every single show to be different. They deliver the most

exquisitely crafted and varied songs today with a skill

that can only come from having toured and recorded

constantly for many years. Ezio’s style has always been

nearly impossible to describe. Their music can range from the highly

rhythmical almost manic Latin feeling rock to delicate dreamy ballads that

are heartbreakingly honest and deeply poetic.

Plus support.

GRYPHON Gryphon may not be one of the better

known of the British progressive bands,

but they are surely one of the most

unique and interesting.

The five albums they produced between

1973 and 1977 show their evolution from an all-acoustic medieval music

quartet to a progressive pop band. Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland, both

alumni of the Royal Academy Of Music, built Gryphon around their interest in

ancient classical and folk music. Harvey, a true virtuoso on the recorder, also

played keyboards and other instruments, while Gulland played crumhorn and

its modern cousin, the bassoon. After several years touring and recording,

Gryphon originally split up in 1977. But now they are back. Revitalised and

reinvented, the virtuoso musicianship and songwriting flair that marked them

out in the 70s has been pushed even further. Different, surprising, exciting.

Gryphon are all these things. And with new songs as well as old being

performed, their return to form is nothing short of astounding.

the songs and landscapes of her native Lincolnshire, but seen through the

Over the course of her remarkable career, Maddy

Prior has worked with some of the most exceptional

musicians in the world – both within Steeleye

Span and beyond. For this performance Maddy

will be joined by accordion player, singer and clog

dancer Hannah James and multi-instrumentalist

Her latest Shortwinger is themed on the wild field, mainly concerned with

birds, hares and their place in folk mythology. The trio will be performing

songs from both albums as well as highlights from Maddy’s solo and band

career – all presented in a daring acoustic style that enhances one of the

finest voices this country has ever produced.
