It is crucial that you are aware of all the health and safety risks around you. Under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, employers and schools have certain responsibilities to ensure the safety of workers or pupils.

Risk assessments

Central to these responsibilities is the carrying out of a risk assessment. A risk assessment should:

identify hazards that pose a risk to employees or pupils

evaluate the risks

put control measures in place to minimize the risks.


Prior to starting any work or project you should assess any risks or hazards, and make a note of these in your workbook.

Workshop signs

How many health and safety signs can you see in your workshop?

Do you know what the different coloured signs mean?

Each colour indicates a different type of safety warning.

Red Signs with a white background are prohibition signs. They are ‘DO NOT’ signs.

Green signs with white in them are safe signs. They direct us and lead us to ‘SAFETY’.

Yellow signs are warning signs. They alert us to ‘DANGER’.

Blue Signs with a white background are mandatory signs.They are ‘MUST DO’ signs.

Safety signs

The same signs that are displayed in your workshop are used in industry. It is the responsibility of the employer to display signs warning of hazards, and to provide adequate safety equipment. It is the responsibility of the employees to wear this equipment and adhere to health and safety regulations.

What to wear


Machine hazards and precautions


Drilling machines, lathes and milling machines have to have machine guards. These are usually heavy, impact resistant plastic shields.

They prevent people putting their hands next to moving parts.They stop loose bits flying out and harming the operator.

Your eyes are valuable! Look after them!

If you are using a drilling machine, sander or lathe, make sure that you use eye protection.

Goggles will shield your eyes, while a visor will give full face protection.

When you are casting, use a full face mask or visor, leggings and other protective equipment.

Wear a face mask or respirator when using spray paints, some adhesives and when sanding, especially with MDF.

If the accident involves a machine, the emergency stop button should be pressed to turn off the machine.Inform your teacher immediately.All accidents, however minor, must be reported and recorded. Any injuries, even minor cuts, must be treated.
