Skiing Australia • 19 July 2011

Time for a snowball fight!

Australia’s fi rst snow skiing club was founded at Kiandra in New South Wales 150 years ago. Today millions of visitors enjoy down hill and cross-country skiing, as well as snowboarding at 14 Alpine resorts in three Australian states. Everyone from the beginner to the skilled skier can enjoy the native alpine gums and breathtaking scenery in these mountainous regions.

Centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition • 22 AAugust 2011 It will be 100 years in December since the Australasian Antarctic Expedition set out from Hobart under the command of Douglas Mawson. It took four weeks for the Auroracaptained by John King Davis, to arrive at Cape Denison, which was the birthplace of Australia’s Antarctic Territory. The Territory was formally transferred from British to Australian ownership in 1936. Stamps commemorating the expedition will be released over four years and features photographs from various national archives.

Bush Babies • 1 July 2011 Australian Bush Babies is a new series of stamps based on fi ve silver coins by Perth Mint. They are illustrated by artist Elise Martinson. The stamps use the coin illustrations and depict a baby kangaroo, sugar glider, dingo, bilby and koala.

The Bilby (Macrotis lagotis(( ) is a nocturnal marsupial with distinctive rabbit-like ears and the Dingo (Canis lupus dingo), is our only native Australian dog. The Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps(( ) is a shy gliding possum found in the forests and woodlands of eastern and southern Australia. Also featured on the stamps is a kangaroooooo and a koala − they are probably Australia’s most recognisable marsupialss..

Sniffer’s letter

Hi Gang

October is Stamp Collecting Month and I can tell you that I will not be standing in Crusher’s way! He will be one of the fi rst rushing into his local Australia Post retail outlet to buy the new Mythical Creatures stamps. He likes collecting stamps about strange creatures so these stamps should fi t in with his collection of monsters, dinosaurs and creepy spiders.

I’m going to make sure I grab all of the Bush Baby stamps and coins. I think I might even use this Stamp Collecting Month to start two new albums − I can put Mythical Creatures and other weird creatures in one and Australian animals in the other, starting with Bush Babies.

See ya!

Love Sniffer

Did you know?

A Postie on skis delivered the mail?In the late 1890s, Bob Hughes, the local postie at Kiandra NSW, did his mail deliveries on skis. Kiandra is an abandoned gold mining town in the Snowy Mountains. No one lives in the town now, but about 300 people lived there when Bob Hughes was the postie. At 1,400

metres above sea level, Kiandra was one of the highest towns in Australia. It was also one of the coldest, with temperatures as low as minus 17°C being recorded. Kiandra was covered in snow during the winter months and people used skis just to move about.
