11 months on, authorities sit on strengthening of Jhelum embankments
SHABIR IBN YUSUF
Srinagar, Aug 14: Despite pass-ing of 11 months since the devas-tating floods ravaged Srinagar, authorities are yet to repair damaged embankments of river Jhelum. The repaired embank-ments have developed cracks at several places posing risk to lives and property of people living near the banks of Jhelum. P e r t i n e n t l y , m a j o r breaches in river embank-ments had led to devasta-tion of Srinagar and its adjoining areas in Septem-ber last year. Crumbling and weak embankments has become a cause of worry for people living in the low-lying areas of Srinagar including Rajbagh, Padshahi Bagh, Shivpora, Kursoo, Meh-
joor Nagar and Hamdaniya Colony Bemina “Our houses were devas-tated when waters of Jhelum breached embankments last year. Now, whenever it rains or water level in Jhelum
increases, we migrated to safer places as the repaired embankments cannot with-stand the pressure,” said a group of residents of Shiv-pora. “Authorities have been
sitting over this serious issue. They have failed to strengthen the flood defense mechanism in Srinagar thus putting the lives and property of people at stake,” they added. The residents said there
is possibility of breaches near Batwara, Shivpora, Rajbagh “The Irrigation and Flood Con-trol department used sub-stan-dard material and did not adopt scientific methods to repair the damaged embankments in Sri-
nagar,” they alleged. Ajaz Rasool, a noted envi-ronmentalist and hydraulic engineer said after the last year’s floods, only temporary restoration of embankments was undertaken. “Permanent restoration has not been carried out. There is subsidence of cracks in these repaired embankments. It is settling naturally and that is why cracks are developing on it,” he said. Elaborating, he said due to floods, Jhelum has lost its carrying capacity. “The river has been extensively silted up around nine feet. Government needs to undertake dredging and reinforce the embank-ments on priority,” he said. Chief Engineer Flood and Irrigation Control Javid Jaffar did not respond to repeated call for comments

A delegation from the locality said pres-ence of large number of stray dogs hampers their movement. “Many people including chil-dren have been bitten by the stray dogs in the area during past several months. Srinagar, Aug 14: Inhab-itants of Wanabal area here on city outskirts have expressed resentment over failure of the authorities to repair a road link to Hum-hama. The residents said in absence of repairs, the road connecting Wanabal to Air-port road has developed pot-holes. “This road link is in shambles. Despite remind-
ers the authorities have failed to undertake repairs. Due to dilapidated condi-tion of the road there is risk of accidents on the stretch. For last few years, the traf-fic pressure has increased manifold on this route but the road is still awaiting repairs. We appeal the Min-ister for Roads and Build-ings to look into the matter,” they said.
