ASPIRE Head first I hope that you all our readers have been enjoying Advent, a time of hope and expectance, as we prepare for Christmas. As you will see in this edition, students have been preparing for Advent with dedicated reflection time in Prayer Space. In this we encourage students to take a moment from the busy world around them and find peace in their lives. We hope that in doing so formally at this time they might connect to this on a more regular basis for themselves. At the end of term we shall be celebrating the removal of the scaffolding that seems to have enveloped the school for the last three years. Whilst we are not complaining about the money we have received that has brought us a new boiler and heating system, new windows to the vast majority of the school and in the most recent project, new roofing and improved insulation, I really won’t be sorry to see the front of the school without this adornment. That said it won’t be long before we start the next project, our £1million extension, which will include three new classrooms, a drama studio and a connected space from the main school through to our existing Science and Music block. It has been a super term but we always enjoy the build up to Christmas with some fun activities. As this edition makes its way home we will welcome all parents and carers to our Carol Service at St Mary’s Church, Debenham on Monday 19 December at 7.00p.m. God bless to all for a peaceful and happy Christmas. Royal College of Music

On Friday 18 November the Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music students travelled to London to visit the Royal College of Music. The school was invited to take part in the “Sparks” scheme which gives young people the opportunity to learn about future careers that music has to offer in the home of some of world’s most talented young musicians. Students took part in a performance masterclass and looked at the ways that they could perfect their own accomplishments.

On arrival we were ushered into one of the grand concert halls and given an extremely informative talk about what careers we could pursue in the field of music. This included talks from students who have studied at the college. From a percussionist to a composer, they inspired us all.

After this, we performed as an ensemble on the stage in the concert hall. We were joined by students from schools from the local area and some talented musicians from the college itself. It was an amazing experience. Ewan McMyn, Molly Weir and Chloe Murray were brave enough to perform a solo in front of the group and received feedback from the teachers at the college and their peers.

Our thanks to all who made the trip possible, we had a brilliant day.Emily Bower, Year 11.

Music and drama honours

We are extremely pleased to announce that Millie Clark has been awarded a Diploma of the London College of Music in Performance (flute). This is a Level 4 qualification and is usually taken at the end of the 1st year of a music degree. Millie not only passed this qualification but with a pass mark of 75%, Millie was awarded a mark of 90%. Millie is now entitled to use the letters Dip.LCM after her name. This would be notable for someone in their first year of study for a music degree but is an amazing achievement considering Millie is still only in Year 8! Well done Millie.

Millie is not the only one who has been successful in their musical endeavours this term. Whether you are studying for Grade 1 or Grade 8 working towards a music examination requires practice and dedication. 30 students took Trinity Music examinations at the start of December, congratulations to them all.

Student CouncilWorking to Improve the School Environment

The Student Council meets half termly to discuss the issues raised at Year Council meetings. These include issues affecting the student body such as where to eat their lunch; having a communal space for those students unable to access their form rooms at lunchtime; toilet facilities and the general movement around the schoolAs a longer term project the Student Council have been involved in the refurbishment of the PE Changing Rooms. From looking at and giving feedback on the architect’s plans in 2015 to helping to decide on the decoration inside the changing rooms a year later, the Student Council’s views were listened to and acted upon.

In 2016-7 the new Student Council is keen to add a water fountain near to the PE changing rooms. This has been an item on the agenda over the last 12 months. They would also like to take the opportunity to raise awareness and some money for WaterAid, recognising how lucky we are in the UK to have constant, fresh water supplies at our fingertips. Therefore this will be an ongoing project throughout the year.

Career development

In October Year 9 visited the Suffolk Skills Show at Trinity Park Ipswich where they were given the chance to look at different careers and business sectors. Students were able to participate in ‘Have a Go’ workshops, where they could try some tasks required for jobs, as well as meet with young ambassadors from local organisations and hear spotlight speakers. Whilst at the show they also met former Debenham High School students who were representing businesses and colleges.

New minibus

As you will realise from the range of trips and visits and from the plethora of sports teams competing in local and national competitions in this edition alone, we have increasing needed the services of more than one minibus. That is why we were delighted when the Friends of Debenham High School started their campaign to raise money for this very worthy cause. We took delivery of the new bus on a very soggy November day and I don’t think it has been out of use since. No muddy boots allowed or Mr Voller will get very cross!

Kenton HallOn Thursday 20 October Year 10 GCSE Food and Nutrition students visited the cookery hub at Kenton Hall. We left school at 9.00a.m. and after a very long journey arrived at 9.05a.m. When we arrived, we were divided into two groups and one group were set the challenge to prepare meat balls with a tomato sauce using the beef from the butchery and ingredients grown on the farm. The equipment in the Hub is fantastic and Emily McVeigh the owner, helped us through the activity.Meanwhile, the other group were taken for a guided tour around the butchery and the estate to see all the buildings, especially their purpose built Roundhouse which was made on site by their engineering company. Here, we saw how the cattle were fed and housed in an environment which eliminates the need for the use of antibiotics. The group then switched around to experience the second activity. Unfortunately ,the second group were not so lucky with the weather and had to huddle in the roundhouse for a heavy shower to ease off, but it was still just as fun.Our meatballs and sauce were packed for us into plastic pots which we enjoyed for lunch on returning to school. Overall the morning was great fun and it was a privilege to experience working in such a high tech kitchen and to see first-hand how farms are having to diversify in the present economic climate. Thank you to Emily McVeigh and her family for hosting us, Mrs Godson and Mr Voller. Hattie Smith and Mia Hyde Year 10

Samaritans’ Purse AppealIt has been a great opportunity once again to get involved in a charity project at school. As a Church of England School we wanted to choose a Christian Charity that helped to make someone smile at Christmas. The charity aims to fill shoe boxes that are given to children less fortunate than ourselves. Mariah and I accepted the challenge to make a difference for those in need. We began by presenting to all students through assemblies way back in September.

There were difficult times along the way, with many morning registrations spent cajoaling and pressing everyone to bring at least one item in to help the cause. At the final calling we totalled 38 boxes, beating our total from 2015 of 27. We would like to take this moment to thank everyone who helped along the way and we hope that in our absence next year that someone takes up the mantle to the wonderful cause.Mariah Dighton and Rebecca Tavendale, Year 11

Cookery Club

Every Thursday after school this term a creative group of Year 7, 8 and 9 students have been busy in Room 1 making Christmas food to share with their families. From a traditional Christmas Cake made from scratch to a chocolate feast in their Yule logs, they have showing us their culinary talents.

And the winner is......George Rogers, Year 8 for his sparkly Christmas Cake

Our thanks

As we await a full article for our Autumn production of Grease, please may we take this moment before our next edition to thanks two key sponsors in our production of Grease.

There was a sense of anticipation, on 30 November in the Boulter Room, as 52 mathematicans from Year 8 and Year 9 arrived to compete in the Team Maths Challenge. Four rounds were contested keenly by all pupils working in teams of four. A mathematical relay round, cross-number puzzle and a shuttle run were among the activities for the morning. After a morning of collaboration, tactical thinking and determination the top teams were determined.

The second placed team was Descartes with Nicholas Van Ek, Ella Bedford, Ewan Green and Elise Dix.

The winning team was Euler with team members Andrew Driver, Emily King, Madoc Karthaus and Jenni Rochford.

We wish the winning team every success when they represent the school in UKMT Team Regional Finals at Framlingham College in February next year.

Book MastermindOnce again Debenham High School is taking part in the Suffolk Schools Book Mastermind Competition. Book Mastermind is a county wide competition open to all pupils in Years 7-9, encouraging and promoting reading across Suffolk. The competition starts in schools with winners from each school competing in area finals. The county final includes workshops by leading authors for young people. The winning school keeps the trophy for a year and receives £200 worth of books.

We held our in-school heats here at Debenham High School from 30 November to 2 December. Over twenty students took part over the three days. Competitors were given two minutes to answer 20 questions relating to their chosen book. Competitors scored 2 points for every correct answer and 1 point for a partly correct answer. The maximum amount of points a competitor can receive is 40 points. If a competitor doesn’t know the answer to a question they can say “pass” on that question and we move on to the next question. In the event of a tie, the number of passes are taken into account.

After a closely fought competition, the winner of the Debenham High School Book Mastermind for 2016-2017 is Emma Burley (9C). Emma’s chosen book was The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. Emma scored 38 points out of a possible 40 points. She received a certificate and £15 in book tokens to spend at the Half Price Christmas Book Fair. Emma will go on to represent Debenham High School in the Book Mastermind Area Finals in March 2017.

Our First Runner Up was Alfie Tournay-Godfrey (9F). Alfie’s chosen book was The Brilliant World of Tom Gates by L Pichon. Alfie scored 34 points out of a possible 40 points. Our Second Runner Up is Ellie Boyle (9G). Ellie’s chosen book was Cliffhanger by Jacqueline Wilson. Ellie scored 34 points (with one pass) out of a possible 40 points. Thank you to everyone who took part in the Book Mastermind Competition this year and congratulations to our winners.

Engineering for real

Year 11 students visited Oxford and had a tour of the Mini plant seeing how cars were made. In a factory that makes 1000 cars a day students learnt about the robotics that are used to make cars in such a time-efficient and mechanised manner. On the way home students stopped off at iFly in Milton Keynes where they learnt the engineering in making and the uses of wind tunnels before having a go at skydiving.

Horham ForestThis year’s Asdan group have been leaving school every Thursday over a fixed number of weeks to go to Horham Forest, next to the Red Feathers Club, 95th Bomber Group Museum. The most important thing after being greeted by the guides for the day is to collect firewood and get the heat going ready for a brew. Once established to get to the business of tree felling, woodland conservation and learning about forestry management. Inbetween the hard work we also learnt country craftmanship and wood work.We have all benefited from this extra qualification, insight into a job in forestry but most of all lots of fun!Ewan Campbell, Year 9

Year 7 Design and TechnologyYear 7 have been making felt monsters in Design Technology. Students design their monsters using “scruffiti” where students produce a scribble, and then pick out shapes from their scribble which they turn into design ideas for monsters. This made students more creative with their design ideas. For the majority of students, it is the first time they have done any sewing by hand.

A huge thank you to all the families who hosted our French visitors. They had a wonderful time thanks to the warm hospitality they received and there were a few tears when it was time for goodbye… After the overwhelming success of this visit, we all look forward to March 2017 when we will be spending a week in France with our partners, meeting their families, finding out what a day in their school is like and visiting the area!

Year 12 Awards Assembly

As ever it was a pleasure to see back our departed Year 11 students from 2015-16. With examination results that have put us once again in the top 15% in the country for attainment and progress we are proud of all their efforts to excel. It was also lovely to hear from a former student, Jack Abbott, as he led the presentations and gave us food for thought on what he has learnt since leaving Debenham High School.

To see all our award winners from the evening please visit our school website.

Alumni newsWe love to hear news of our former students. Just this week we were contacted by a parent of Finn Lidbetter who was a student at the school until 2009. Having competed in Mathematics Challenges in his time at the school he is now at university in Ontario, Canada and studying Mathematics and Computer Science at University. His mother kindly wrote to us to let us know that he had just competed in the World Computer Programming Finals in North America. His team came third in the competition beating Harvard along the way. Closer to home and as a 2016 leaver, we also heard that Eddie Knock was selected as one of only three from 120 students at Otley and Easton College who applied to an international agronomy project studying crop development across four countries. Eddie has just returned from the first of three international trips - can’t be bad! It is hearing things like this that makes this job so worthwhile. Do keep us posted of any former student news at [email protected], many of the class of 2014 have now started the next stage of their learning at university. We wish them all well as they start their chosen career pathway. Here are the destinations of those from that super year group.

School’s Cathedral Service

Jacob Cook, Joe Bagnall and Pippa Redstall represented the school with serenity and pride as they took reponsibility for the ceremonial candle in the annual School’s Church Service at the Bury St. Edmunds’ Cathedral. The theme of the service this year was “I am the light of the world”.

Remembrance Service

Police Cadets

Year 7 and 8 students paid their respects to the fallen in our service at St Mary’s Church on 11 November 2016. With Year 8 student leaders Tom Marshall, Nicholas van Ek, Eva Mills and Pippa Redstall delivering readings and laying a wreath, it was a solemn and contemplative service. With the haunting delivery of the last post by Poppy Simpson, Year 9, we collectively remembered how grateful we are to all who gave their lives to give us our freedom today.

Congratulations to Callum Stephenson and Charlotte Williams who were selected to be Police Cadets in the local area. The students undertake a range of training to understand what life in the police force is like and engage in a number of community youth projects.

Prayer Space

It seems odd to say that our annual prayer space week was a huge success, since in order to be so there would be no fanfare, no loud hurrahs, nor any congratulatory celebrations. However, students approached this chance to reflect with genuine consideration and calmness. With different stimuli which encourage students to take time and feel, such as the sorry wall, the empty chair, the bowl of forgivness, the mirror of honesty and the tree of worry, we all were able to take time to just be. For many this includes letting God into our lives to share and support us throughout times good and bad.

Year 7 RugbyAfter our excellent result against Thomas Mills we headed off for a tournament at Stowmarket RFC. We had games against Stowupland and Stowmarket High School. Some of the squad had never played a competitive game before but were keen gain experience with our more seasoned players. We played Stowupland first. They were a very well drilled side both in defence and attack and it was difficult for us to gain any ground. As the game progressed so did the confidence of the squad and eventually we scored three trys. The final result was a draw. By the time we started the second game against Stowmarket High School we were playing much more flowing rugby; both in defence and attack the squad proved the regular training sessions made a difference. Our open and linking play in the backs was excellent and the forwards were winning most of the scrums through some excellent hooking. The final score was 6 trys to 0. A great team performanceTry scorers were Ollie Saddleston, George Dix, Rhys Jones and Morgan Lawrence.

HockeyUnder 13 Mixed v Thomas Mills lost 8-1, Under 14 Girls v Hartismere won 7-3Under 14 Boys v Hartismere lost 8-2, Under 14 Girls v Copleston won 1-0Under 14 Girls v Hadleigh won 3-1

Table TennisThe Under 16 Boys team qualified for the County Finals in November by beating all teams at the High Suffolk School Sport Partnership competition. They competed in the County Finals at St. Joseph’s in Ipswich. The boys played well and won most of their matches, beating Thurston, Newmarket, St Joseph’s and Copleston. They beat the team that won last year, Sir John Leman, to be crowned County Champions! They will now take on the best schools in the Eastern region in Grantham on 15 January.

NetballU14 Girls netball came 6th in the County finals at Rushmere Sports Centre in November. They had qualified for the finals by beating all schools in the Northern Area Competition in October;DHS v Hartismere, won; 8 – 3; DHS v Sir John Leman, won, 7-1; DHS v Alde Valley, won, 18 – 0;DHS v Benjamin Britten, won, 13-1; DHS v Thomas Mills, won, 8-1; DHS v East Point Academy, won, 18-2; DHS v Bungay, won, 18-2; DHS v Ormiston Denes, won, 10-1

During the finals they were up against some extremely experienced teams and players and performed fantastically well. They beat Thurston 14-3 and lost their other three games. The Under 16 team, made up of six Year 10 and two Year 11 students, also took part in the Northern Area tournament winning most their games and drawing one in the Under 16 competition. At the county finals they found it difficult to compete against some of the best schools in Suffolk, especially with most of them being a year older. However, they battled hard and managed to finish 7th.Other results: Year 8 v Thomas Mills drew 8-8, Year 9 v Thomas Mills won 18-2, Year 9 v Kesgrave lost 17-7

Ski ClubDebenham High School has started ski race training at the dry ski slope in Ipswich. We have eleven keen skiers who have attended four sessions with qualified instructors. They have been working on their techniques around the slalom poles, which has improved their racing skills. Some of the students are now extremely competent skiers. The school are hoping to challenge some local schools in some racing in the New Year.

We said it had been a busy term!

Lower School Boys FootballYear 7 boys team put in some excellent performances in both the County and National Cups. They remain in the County Cup, where Pakefield will be their next opponents, but their good run in the National Cup came to an end in round 4 where they lost 9-2 to a very good Langley team.

Year 8 boys team have made it through to round 3 in the County Cup and round 4 of the National Cup. To get this far they had a hard fought win against King Edward VI School in the County Cup and a 5-3 win over Horringer Court in the national competition. They have been drawn to play East Point Academy in the next round of both, with the game due to be played the week after the Christmas holiday.

The Year 9 boys team lost in round 2 of the national competition, falling 2-0 to Claydon but they did have a very good 6-1 win against Thomas Mills to progress to round 3 of the county competition. St Benedict’s await the team in what will be a home fixture.

Year 11 Boys footballThis side had a tough Round 2 ESFA Cup draw with a home tie against Claydon High. A really high level of intensity and effort from the team saw them go ahead through a rare goal from Oli White, only for Claydon to equalise before half-time. Despite missing a penalty the team secured the win with a Baris Altintop strike to earn a well-earned place in Round 3. Here we were drawn away to Chobham Academy, in Stratford, London. The trip down saw the boys enjoy a trip around the Olympic Park as the school is within throwing distance of the velodrome! Jake Conway scored in the first minute to set the tone of the game and another excellent performance from all of the team. Henry Lockwood then made it 2-0 before the home side pegged us back with two quick goals. Jake put us into half time 3-2 ahead and the game was evenly poised. A fine free kick from Baris meant we could relax a little more and the boys held out for a 4-2 win. They now have a home tie against Gordens School from Woking in the last 16 which will be played on Monday 9 January 2pm KO. Good luck! Girls footballThe Year 9 and 10 side had a tough away fixture in their 3rd Round ESFA tie, away to Westbourne. This was a very even contest and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that we conceded two late goals to lose 2-0. The Year 10 and 11 side travelled the long journey to Spalding Academy, Lincolnshire to contest their 3rd round tie. A herculean effort from the side was not quite enough against a physical side, and seeing as most of our side are Year 10 students, this was always going to be difficult. Despite fine performances from Bea Trott, Mia Hyde and Harriet Pivett, we lost 2-0. Special mention to Lauren Swinburne making her debut and acquitting herself so well.

County honoursCongratulations to Mia Hyde who has also played matches this season for the Under 16 girls county side, despite being a year young! Kian Darwell-Taylor has also played for the Under 15 boys side, and Jake Conway for the Under 16 side. BadmintonWe have had some fantastic results in our area competitions over the past few weeks, with two of our three sides qualifying for the county finals in January. Firstly the Under 14 boys of Ben Evans, Franek Ouko, John Turner and Luke Davies-Stokes won convincingly against Hartismere, Thomas Mills and Bungay to reach the County Final. They won every single match to go through undefeated. The Under 14 Girls then won a close tournament against the same opposition with the team of Mollie Richardson, Emma Burley, Emily King and Catherine Odell. The Under 16 boys, who are all Under 15 from Year 10, finished a really creditable runners up to Thomas Mills in their tournament. The side were Jake Phillips, James Davies-Stokes, Matt Walker and Ryan Keeble.
