out frontFrank Marino—Diva of Divas!

by Brian SandsJoan Rivers may be gone, but when Frank Marino comes on to emcee Divas,

the Las Vegas revue he’s headlined for many years, you’d swear she had comeback from the great beyond!

Marino will be taking his cast of celebrity superstar female impersonators tothe IP Casino-Resort-Spa in Biloxi for two shows on June 16 and 17. It promisesto be a fabulous evening.

I first saw Marino in Las Vegas in2000 and he created such a fine illusionof Ms. Rivers that, fan of hers that I am,I couldn’t get enough of him. In fact,Marino has had a number of cosmeticoperations to look more like Joan; be-cause of this, she once sued him forpersonality plagiarism. They later rec-onciled, however, and even appeared onTV shows together.

Marino is Las Vegas’ longest-run-ning headliner. Growing up in Brooklyn,he always knew, even as a child, that hewould become a star. Little could hehave imagined back then, though, thathe’d be wearing glittering gowns de-signed by Bob Mackie, famed for hiswork with Cher, Carol Burnett and Ms.Rivers herself. In Divas, he changes those gowns in between every number andeach of them is more stunning and drop-dead gorgeous than the last.

As an adult, Marino would head out West and, for over thirty years, he hasnightly been summoning up the persona of Joan Rivers in Las Vegas drag shows, holding the record as the longest-active headliner on the Strip. He’s performed25,000+ shows to audiences totaling over 10 million people. He’s also anaccomplished author. His first book, His Majesty, the Queen, was a bestseller

and has been released in paperback as well. He made his film debut in MissCongeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous which starred Academy Award winnerSandra Bullock.

Marino has received two Las VegasWalk of Fame stars and even has astreet named after him there. In 2005,Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman hon-ored his hard work and commitment tothe Las Vegas performance world byproclaiming February 1st to be “FrankMarino Day.”

As multi-talented as Frank Marinois, however, Divas would not be thetremendously enjoyable success that itis were it not for all the other giftedperformers who contribute their talentsto it. When I saw the show in LasVegas, there was a killer Bette Midler,an amazing Michael Jackson, and theDiana Ross was perfect. Comic ver-sions of Madonna and Tammy Wynettedisplayed some twisted humor, a re-freshing change from all the pretty girls.

I’m not exactly sure who you canexpect to see in Biloxi, but I wouldn’t besurprised if Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner, and Cher take to the stage. Among theyounger set of divas, Lady Gaga,Beyoncé, and Britney Spears are alllikely to put in appearances in thisenergetic show.

Mississippi may not be the mostprogressive state in the nation but hatsoff to the IP Casino-Resort-Spa for bring-ing Frank Marino and the highly accom-plished cast of Divas to Biloxi so thatwe here on the Gulf Coast can enjoytheir outstanding brand of entertain-ment.
