Rider’s enrollment of more than 5,800 consists of approximately4,600 full- and part-time undergraduate and almost 1,200 grad-

uate students studying on campuses in Lawrenceville and Princeton,New Jersey. Areté

With the start of the 1990-91 academic school year, Rider Universityimplemented its innovative Areté Program for all student-athletes. Aretérefers to the ancient Greek ideal of a balanced striving for excellence inall areas of life. The purpose of the program, which has been detailed inThe NewYork Times andThe Times of Trenton, is to help student-athletes de-velop in all areas of their lives, not just on the playing fields or in theclassroom. Subjects of the seminars include time management, stressmanagement, sports nutrition, substance abuse, communication skills,study skills, training techniques, HIV, etiquette/good manners, inter-view techniques, resume writing, and life after Rider.

Student Transitional Education Program (STEP)

During the 1993-94 academic year, the Rider Department of Athleticsdeveloped STEP for varsity athletics. Under the direction of the Asso-ciate Director of Athletics, STEP provides individual and group tutor-ing, as well as study tables that are mandatory for certain student-athletes. STEP also coordinates progress reports, monitors the student-athletes academic progress, and provides workshops on topics such aslibrary skills, test taking and note taking. In 2003 Rider added its firstfull-time Academic Support Coordinator, Sonya Hurt.

TeamMentor

Through the mentor program, established in the fall of 1994, Rider fac-ulty members or administration are paired with varsity athletic teams.Mentors are present for support, advice, cheerleading, as well as othernon-coaching duties. The mentor program opens communication linesbetween faculty/staff members and athletes, and gives the student-athlete another person in the Rider community to turn to for supportand guidance.

Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC)

Comprised of one student-athlete from each of Rider’s varsity teams, theStudent-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) meets monthly to discussvarious student-welfare issues and to organize ways for student-athletesto become involved in the community. Through the advisory council,Rider student-athletes have organized toy drives and served meals to theneedy at Thanksgiving.

HEAD COACH DRAYSON HOUNSOME

Drayson Hounsome returns for his third season as the head coach of the Rider University women’s soccer team.Hounsome is the fourth Rider head coach since women’s soccer became a varsity sport in 1997.

The 2007 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, Hounsome came to Rider prior to the 2008 season from theC. W. Post Campus of Long Island University, where he finished the 2007 season with a program record 17 wins andadvanced to the third round of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.

“After receiving over 100 applications for the position, Drayson Hounsome emerged as a great fit for Rider,” saidRider Director of Athletics Don Harnum. “He is a proven winner as a head coach and has strong recruiting ties inthe Northeast.”

Hounsome’s charge of returning the Broncs to the level they were at five years ago, when they won 23 games overtwo seasons, began when he brought in 12 new players for the 2009 season and finished that year with a 6-1 home record.

Hounsome is the winningest women’s soccer coach at C. W. Post with 85 wins (85-34-17) in seven seasons, 16more than the previous program record for Pioneer career wins. In 2007 two of his players earned honorable mentionAll-America honors and his team ended the regular season ranked seventh in the nation. Four of his C. W. Post teams

were ranked in the Top 25.“The academic reputation of the University, successful athletic department and great location make Rider an attractive choice for many high

level student-athletes,” said Hounsome. “I look forward to leading the women’s soccer program towards a MAAC championship.”Hounsome led his 2005 C. W. Post team to its first-ever NYCAC tournament championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II Women's

Soccer Championship tournament for the first time since 1999. C.W. Post finished the 2005 regular season with a No. 20 national ranking in theNSCAA/adidas Division II poll.

“Drayson had a tremendous amount of success at C.W. Post, both athletically and academically, and I am confident that he can help lead theRider women’s soccer program to similar success,” Harnum added.

Under Hounsome the Pioneers’ team grade point average was above 3.20 his entire tenure, four times earning a national ranking. Prior tocoaching at C. W. Post Hounsome coached for five seasons as anassistant at Molloy College.

For nearly a decade, Hounsome was an important part of thesoccer community, serving as National Director of Events andOnline Operations for Noga Soccer, where he began his coach-ing career in 1993. Hounsome has earned coaching licenses fromboth the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and theNational Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Hehas coached club and select teams in tournaments both in theUnited States and Europe and has coached in the Eastern NewYork Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Originally from the Channel Islands of Great Britain, Houn-some has competed in Europe and attended England 's prestigioussporting institute, Loughborough University, where he earned aBachelor of Science degree in Sport Science and Physical Educa-tion and also garnered an English F.A. Coaching license.

Hounsome is also the author of a book, “The Baffled Parent’sGuide to Coaching Girls’ Soccer” available at Barnes & Nobel, Borders and at Amazon.com

Kristy-Rose Dougherty begins her sixth season at Rider as an assistant coach.Dougherty, a 2001 Rider graduate with a degree in Communications was a member of the inaugural Rider

women’s soccer team. A two-time All-MAAC selection, Dougherty was voted second team All-American for first-year teams by Soccer Buzz Magazine. A team captain and team MVP at Rider, Dougherty was a four-year starter,scoring 18 points (five goals, eight assists) in 77 games. “Doc” currently ranks 14th all-time at Rider in points,and 10th assists. At St. Basil Academy Dougherty was a four-year varsity starter and two-time team captain.Three-times she earned All-AACA honors in high school. A five-year member of the EPYSA ODP program, anda three-year member of the New Jersey Wildcats, Dougherty remains active coaching girls youth soccer in Penn-sylvania.

OUTLOOK

With the return of 15 letterwinners, including nine startersand both goalkeepers, and the addition of a highly talentedincoming class, the 2010 Rider University women’s soccer

team is ready to return to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Cham-pionship tournament for the seventh time in the last 10 years.

“Our goal is to get in the conference tournament,” said third-yearhead coach Drayson Hounsome, “and then have a go at winning it.With the level of talent we have, the quality of players we have thisyear, we have the ability to compete with everybody in the conference.I expect us to find a way into the conference tournament.”

The long list of returnees is led by senior captain Lauren Musumeci,who already ranks fourth in career scoring at Rider. “Musumeci was in-volved greatly in our offense last year,” Hounsome said, “and she will ei-ther be an attacking midfielder or play up front again this year.”

An Andrew J. Rider Scholar, Musumeci led the Broncs with sevengoals and three assists for 17 points in 2009, ninth best in the MAAC.

Other key returnees include fourth-year goalkeeper Alex Post, seniorcaptain Kimberly Reichel at midfield, senior Kara Perkoski, sophomoredefenders Meghan Mohr and Angela Monaco and sophomore midfieldersDemi Mello and Kaitlin Wylie.

Post is a veteran of 50 starts in the Rider nets, including 12 last year.As a sophomore she led the MAAC in saves and was 10th in the nationwith 7.2 saves per game.

“Alex brings a lot of experience to the position this year,” Hounsomesaid, “and is part of a strong group of goalkeepers we now have on thesquad.”

Reichel is a veteran of 57 games, including 29 starts over the lasttwo years. “Reichel has improved each year since I’ve been at Rider,”Hounsome said, “and I hope she continues where she left off at the endof last season.”

Perkoski has played in 56 Rider games, starting 53, at both ends ofthe field. “Kara started in the center of defense for us last year but maylook to be utilized more as a forward this year, like she did her freshmanand sophomore seasons,” Hounsome said.

Mohr (19 starts), Monaco (17 starts), Mello (18 starts) and Wylie(15 starts) all played a major role as freshmen last year. “Wylie provedto be very good as a central defender for us towards the end of the sea-son,” Hounsome said. “Mohr and Monaco were our starting fullbacks asfreshmen and we only expect more from them in 2010. Similarly, Mellohad a strong freshman year and now comes into the season with a wholeyear of experience under her belt.”

The newcomers include a pair of high school All-Americans, BeccaKape and Carolyn Wiley.

Wiley, an ESPN All-American, a two-time South Jersey DefensivePlayer of the Year and the Burlington County Player of the Year wastwice a First Team All-State selection. Wiley led Lenape to three con-secutive New Jersey Group IV State Championships and back-to-backESPN FAB 50 top-five finishes. “Carolyn is an accomplished central de-fender who will anchor the heart of our defense,” Hounsome said. “Sheis very tough to beat, both on the ground and in the air, and will playa major role for us defensively.”

Kape, an NSCAA/adidas All-American, earned All-State honors atWestfield High, and was named the area Player of the Year by both theNewark Star Ledger and the Bridgewater Courier News. She also ledthe Region 1 premier team, Parsippany Hurricanes, to the 2009 NewJersey State Cup final and the Super Y League National Final. “Becca is

an outstanding central defender, one of the best in the region,” Houn-some said. “She is composed with the ball, strong in the air and hasgood pace. Becca will be an integral part of what is a very strong de-fensive unit over the next four years. "

“We brought in a lot of talented players,” Hounsome said. “Thedepth we have now in the squad has improved greatly.”

Other newcomers include goalkeepers Danielle Singson and CaylaBercaw, defenders Carley Carmody and Sarah Cirigliano, and forwardsBridgette Bartkowski, Jody Sokol and Jenn Meier.

Singson, Bercaw and sophomore Jenn Nichols give Rider four qual-ity keepers to work with. “Jenn really pushed Alex as a freshman lastyear,” Hounsome said, “and I expect it to continue with the addition ofDanielle and Cayla.” Nichols owned a 1.43 goals against average and a.769 save percentage along with a 3-3-1 record.

“It is tremendous to have four keepers,” Hounsome said. “Havingfour makes the practice environment so much better. Danielle comes inwith a reputation as an excellent goalkeeper and Cayla has the potentialto do very well also. We will have to wait to see how long it takes thetwo freshmen to adjust to the college level. It could be one of the mostcompetitive positions on the team.”

Carmody earned All-State honors and was a 2009 ESPN Rise NewJersey honoree, helping Lenape to three consecutive New Jersey GroupIV State Championships and back-to-back ESPN FAB 50 top-fivefinishes. “Carley is one of the top defenders in New Jersey and a tremen-dous athlete,” Hounsome said. “I am excited to be adding a player withCarley's potential to Rider. "Carley and Carolyn (Wiley) know how towin championships, having won state championships for both club andschool. I am confident these experiences with the Comets and LenapeHigh will be very important to our future success."

Cirigliano was an All-State midfielder at Nutley High and led theRegion 1 premier team, Parsippany Hurricanes, to the 2009 New Jer-sey State Cup Final and Super Y League National Final. “Ziggy is a wellbalanced attacking player with good speed,” Hounsome said.

Bartkowski, Meier and Sokol are all goal scorers. Bartkowski ledCherokee High in goals and assists as a junior and senior and graduatedin the top ten in career scoring. In club ball she was the 2008 OffensivePlayer of the Year in the Region 1 Premier League. “Bartkowski is aprolific goal scorer,” Hounsome said. “She knows how to score andknows how to win.”

Sokol scored 12 of Bensalem High’s 23 goals last season despite miss-ing three games to earn First Team All-Suburban One League NationalConference and Bucks County Courier Times First Team All-Area(Golden Team) honors. “Jody has scored a bag full of goals,” Hounsomesaid. “All of the freshmen forwards have tremendous pace.”

Meier earned All-State honors while leading St. Anthony’s to the2008 NSCHSAA state championship as her team’s leading scorer andled the Region 1 premier team, Stonybrook Arsenal, to the 2007, 2008and 2009 New York State Cup Final. “Jen is a superb player,” Houn-some said. “She can score with either foot and is excellent on set pieces.She has won a state championship on the club level and won a statechampionship on the high school level so she knows what to do to win.”

Other key returnees include sophomores Claire Thompson, AngelaLozupone, Abi Cottam, Alexis Coughlin, Kelly Sandefur and KateStevens.

Thompson started six of the 18 games she played in as a rookie lastyear and ranked second on the 2009 team in goals and points. “Claire

was pretty much our utility player last year,” Hounsome said. “Sheplayed in the back, outside, up top, wherever we needed her. She musthave played six positions last year. She has a tremendous engine; she isdriven and is very competitive.”

Lozupone played in 11 games last season as a rookie. “Loz shouldonce again see action as a wide midfield or attacking forward,” Houn-some said. “She is the fastest player in the program and with a year ofexperience playing at the college level will become even more of an of-fensive threat.”

Cottam was the top recruit last year but a preseason eye injury heldher to just eight games played. Despite the injury she still shared theteam lead in assists. “Abi just began to show what she brings to thetable at the end of last season,” Hounsome said. “With no injuries thisyear we are expecting big things from her.”

Coughlin saw action in 18 games as a rookie. “Alexis played a lot ofminutes last year,” Hounsome said. “She created a lot of opportunitiesfor others and will continue to be an offensive threat again this year.”

Sandefur came to Rider from Melbourne, Australia and played in 13games last year. “Kelly was injured during preseason last year and wasbehind for a good six or seven weeks,” Hounsome said. “She had a greatspring season and got physically stronger during the year so we’re ex-pecting good things from her.”

Stevens played in 10 games last year, starting four. “Kate would haveplayed much more if not injured last year,” Hounsome said. “She has re-covered extremely well from the ACL surgery and is in great shape. I’m

looking forward to seeing her develop into an outstanding defensivemidfielder.”

The Broncs were 6-1 at home last year and open a new turf field withlights this year.

“We played well at home last season and had a lot of support at ourgames,” Hounsome said. “With the night games this year we are ex-pecting bigger crowds and even more support.”

The larger crowds are expected to see a much better product thisyear as well. “Across the board we have good, quality players,” Houn-some said. “We’re not lacking in any area. We’ve got depth, probablythe most talented and deepest squad in many, many years at Rider.”

The schedule begins with a road trip north to take on Vermont andNew Hampshire. “In the August heat it is always better to go north,”Hounsome said.

Rider hosts St. Francis-PA, Fairleigh Dickinson and NJIT whileplaying at Delaware State, Sacred Heart, Wagner and Holy Cross in thenon-conference half of the season.

The first official night game on the Rider campus will take placewith a pregame ceremony September 10. “The players get more excitedfor those (night) games,” Hounsome said. “You get more fans, yourpreparation is better because you are not rushing to the games fromclass. We’re excited to play under the lights.”

With more talent and depth, the Broncs will be an exciting team towatch in 2010, when the bright lights will be shining on them.
