“The world around us is a reflection of our souls.”Stanislav Stratiev

I still cannot understand why several people broke into tears upon seeing my photographs of beautiful Bulgarian nature. Maybe because the photos are reflections of the world around us, the way it is – beautiful and contradictory. We all live with a divided soul in a divided world. One half of us is plunged into the chaos of everyday life, and most often it is insecure and confused due to our inability to fit adequately in society and keep up with the rapidly changing world. The other half still lives with the idealism and the first smells of childhood where the world is wonderful, and happiness is our eternal and primal state. And when in the photos we see the natural environment we live in, and when all of a sudden we realise how harmonious and beautiful life is in itself, all this brings to light our inner conflict. Could there be a world without conflicts? Hardly! Could we combine the interests of a headlong developing consumer society with the interests of nature, which surrounds us and which actually gives us life? The answer is also: hardly! The idea behind this exhibition is first to provoke the feelings, then the thoughts, and if this results in some – be it minimal – action, that’s the beginning. With these photos I want to shout at myself, and maybe there will be someone else to hear me, too: ‘Man, stop for a moment, look into your soul, and do what is needed to make the world around become the world of your dreams. It depends on you.’

Absurd BuildingsAbsurde Bauten

The Rila Mountains

Rila

6 – 7 One Life / Ein Leben

Sycamore in the Uzana Area, the Balkan Mountains, 2004 The Walnut-tree that Left for Italy, 1996

The young sycamore has a chance of surviving as it knows how to fight draught and rocks. This majestic walnut-tree in the Alevits Area, in the lands of Tarnicheni village, had no chance against people. It left for Italy in the form of timber, in the beginning of the year 2000. And it was not the only one.

8 – 9 Forest / Wald

Fire in the vicinity of the Koprinka Reservoir, July 24th, 2007 The Rila Forest, St. Dimitar’s Day, October 26th, 2004

On the hottest day of July, in 40 degree Celsius heat, two wild fires broke out, almost simultaneously, in our region of Kazanlak. On the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains the wild fire stretched for 5 km, while on the northern slopes of Sredna Gora until the Koprinka reservoir, it stretched for over 3 km. It was mainly pine forest burning, but along with it, everything else around. And there was wind at that. After a three-day fight and with the help of the fire brigades from other towns, the wild fire was brought under control, but time still hasn’t healed the scars. According to investigations, wild fires break out by accident. The mixed forest in the area of Rila Monastery amazes me in the autumn. It’s great!

14 – 15 Land / Erde

OpenMineatMaritsaIztok2ThermоelectricPowerPlant,2007 Presoka Village, Zlatograd Municipality, Eastern Rhodopes, 2004

Almost all industrial giants built in the 1970s and 1980s were erected on fertile farming land. The area of the brown coal in Maritsa Iztok mines is 240 square kilometres, under a thick chernozem which we are going to lose beyond retrieve. It may turn out that the energy produced by TPPs in the region is not at all cheap for the country. The Rhodopi Mountains serve as an example how one field, gained over from the mountain with a lot of work and persistence, can feed a whole family. And here I speak of poor forest soils that don’t give great yields.

The Lands of Dolno Sahrane Village, Pavel Banya Municipality, 2008

Most wild animals and birds keep away from humans due to our aggressive behaviour towards them. No other creature on earth kills without need or for pleasure – we are the only ones. Maybe, in this particular situation, the click of the camera’s shutter reminds the birds of a similar, but deadly click. Actually, they don’t have many reasons to trust us and let us come closer – we are noisy, insolent and arrogant bipeds.

18 – 19 Sky / Himmel

Kremikovtzi Steel Plant, February, 24th, 2008 The Sky above Sopot, August, 2008

The sky above Kremikovtzi usually has the colour of rusty ashes, or is totally missing. One round of the Paragliding World Cup took place here, in the sky above Sopot, in August, 2008. Its participants and fans (in total over 200 people) will carry with them a memory of Bulgaria, mainly connected to the flights, the personal contacts and the beautiful nature of Bulgaria.

22 – 23 Extraction / Abbau

The Mouth of the Gabrovnitsa River at the Koprinka Reservoir, 2003 The Burgas Salt-pans, 2007

From the borrow pit in the village of Viden, Pavel Banya Municipality, people extract inert materials: sand and gravel that the Tundzha and Gabrovnitsa rivers bring from the Balkan Mountains. The excavator digs indiscriminately and in the course of time this moon-like surface appears. In the salt-pans near the town of Burgas, people have extracted salt for 2000 years in the most natural way – through evaporating sea water. A hundred years ago, they organized industrial production and in its concept it remains unchanged until today.

26 – 27 Energy / Energie

The Winter of 1995 The Shipka Pass

In wintertime, we all want to stay warm. In smaller towns like ours, the majority of people gave up on central and electrical heating systems, and switched to wood. We live in the 21st century, but wood is after all the cheapest fuel. It’s true that it pollutes the air we breathe, that we have forests, but they are not endless. Clearing the Bulgarian forest for domestic and industrial purposes has turned into a state policy in the last decade.

Yana Village, Sofia Region, 2008 Bezvodno Village, Kardzhali Region, 2007

The village of Yana is alive, because it is located next to the Kremikovtzi Steel Plant and the capital of Sofia, which offer many job opportunities, but at the same it is punished - from an ecological point of view - by the same steel plant. The air its villagers are breathing has been polluted for decades, and everything is covered with dust. The village of Bezvodno is 1500 metres above sea level in the midst of virgin nature. A handful of the remaining old people live in stone houses built 100-150 years ago, struggling to survive. They raise animals, plant potatoes and tobacco. For now, Europe’s presence here is exhausted with a flag which – together with the Bulgarian flag – flaps above the mayoralty.

St. Jordan’s Day, the Town of Kalofer, January, 6th, 2008 St. Todor’s Day in Panicherevo Village, Nikolaevo Municipality, March 15th, 2008

Wild, beautiful and happy, the citizens of Kalofer celebrate St. Jordan’s Day with a male horo (ring dance) in the Tundzha river. At an air temperature of minus 10°C, the hot-blooded men shed sweat for entire 22 minutes. This is how it has always been on this day, and this is how it will continue to be as long as the citizens of Kalofer exist. The Gypsies from the village of Panicherevo celebrate St. Todor’s Day like a holiday of their own, with a lot of passion, racket and an authentic horse race.

36 – 37 Temples Of Faith / Tempel Des Glaubens

The Church of Gela Village, Smolyan Municipality, Western Rhodopi Mountains, 2002 Mosque in Borovo Quarter, Zlatograd Municipality, Eastern Rhodopi Mountains, 2003

The Christians from the village of Gela have their small temple for prayers, but this idyllic landscape can disappear forever if Super Perelic Project is launched. The villages of Solishta, Stikal and Gela will probably turn into the mountain version of the village of Vlas. I wouldn’t like to imagine what will happen to the virgin nature in the area. Here, in Borovo quarter, away from the bustle of big settlements, the mosque – in which Muslims communicate with God – sits nestled as if stepping out of a fairy tale.

The Ceiling in the Rock Church of the Holy Mother of God, Rock Churches of Ivanovo Archaeological Reserve, 14th c., 2006

St. Teodor Church from the same Reserve, 13th c.

The ceiling of the Rock Church of the Holy Mother of God near the village of Ivanovo, Ruse Region, has been preserved for two reasons. A rock rim used to serve as an entryway to the church, but it collapsed rendering access to the interior practically impossible. Besides, it’s more difficult to scribble on the ceiling. Not so favourable is the situation with the murals of St. Teodor’s Church. They are easily accessible. In the course of many years, there has been no one to protect the unique mural paintings from ourselves. Since 1979, they have been included in UNESCO’s List of World Cultural and Nature Heritage.

St. Teodor Kirche im selben Schutzgebiet, 13. Jahrhundert

The Cut-in-half Tomb near the Town of Maglizh, 2007 The Kazanlak Tomb – 4th century BC, 2004

In the valley of Kazanlak, there are around 1,500 Thracian tombs. The most privileged one is the Kazanlak family tomb, famous for its superbly preserved unique murals. It was included in UNESCO’s world heritage list as early as 1979. External walls have been erected to protect it, there is an air conditioning system, the access of tourists is limited; instead an identical replica has been made, and so on. Hundreds of other tombs, however, are much different from how they originally looked, dug up by antiquity looters and archaeologists. It’s worth preserving the remaining tombs, if we feel, at least a little bit, descendents of the Thracians.

Einschnitt des Grabhügels bei Mâglizh, 2007 Die thrakische Gruft bei Kazanlâk – 4. Jh. V. Chr., 2004

42 – 43 Monasteries / Klöster Church of the Nativity near the Town of Shipka, 2007 Tsarnogorski Monastery St. Cosmas and St. Damian the Unmercenaries and Miracle-

Workers, 2008 The monastery near the town of Shipka was built following the initiative of General Skobelev’s mother, with the financial support of Russia, to commemorate the Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation. For its 100th Anniversary, in 2003, the facade was renovated and the ten domes were gold-plated, again with Russian donations. The Tsarnogorski Monastery near the village of Gintsi, Pernik Region, has had a different fate. It was built, remodelled, relocated and burned down, then rebuilt again in its present-day form, and all this in the course of a thousand years. Now, its three inhabitants rely mainly on donations for the monastery’s maintenance and restoration. ‘The purpose of human life, alas, is not to create a good family, to raise good children, to give a lot to people. The purpose of human life is to save our soul…’ These are the young monk Nikanor’s words who has turned his back on his career as an overly-successful broker at the American stock exchange.

The morning on the highway was fantastic – windy, with a crystal-clear sky interspersed with clouds. As I don’t have a gift for poetry – I took a picture. I had a long-time desire to ask the roadside girls for a certain peculiar service. Upon my timid attempt to explain what this was all about, the swarthy beauty cut me short: ‘You give me 20 leva now; you take pictures for 2 minutes at 20 meters… from behind.’ So I did.

Die Hemus Autobahn bei der Ausfahrt nach Vetrino, 2001 17- und 20-jährige Straßenmädchen – Irgendwo im Nordwesten Bulgariens,

Mai 2008

48 – 49 The War On The Road / Der Krieg Auf Der Strasse

Sofia by Night, 2008 Auto Morgue near the Town of Sliven, 2008

Sofia boulevards are dangerous by day but even more so by night. The figure between the car lights is that of a woman selling evening newspapers – a tough and risky profession. The war on the road will not end with incidental campaigns, launched by the traffic police in partnership with the media. It is, above all, a question of upbringing and discipline; it requires each of us to revise our way of thinking.

50 – 51 Sofia Of The Automobiles / Sofia Der Automobile

35th Secondary School, Lozenets Quarter in Sofia, 2008 The Zebra Crossing on Vasil Levski Blvd. Between Sofia University and the National

Art Academy, 19:15, May 30th, 2008

In the yard of this school in the centre of Sofia, the painted Trabant is the only means of entertainment for the children. With my personal Opel (usually on my own), I often take the distance between the National Palace of Culture and the Eagles’ Bridge for around 40 minutes. It takes me 20 minutes to walk the same distance on foot. I suppose that with a bike I can reduce it to ten minutes, but the question is – where can I pass? The young citizens of Sofia don’t ask themselves this question, they simply ride their bikes wherever they can. Of course, it’s hard for them to squeeze between the cars; they don’t belong on pedestrians’ zebra crossings, either. They ask for bicycle alleys, as in any normal European capital, but just asking doesn’t get the job done.

Kunstakademie, 19.15 Uhr, 30. Mai 2008

Part of Sofia’s waste, part of these 603,000 bales are waiting to be relocated to new storage grounds, before being processed. It’s still not clear when, where and how – all these are questions of the future.

54 – 55 Absurd Buildings / Absurde Bauten

The Buzludzha Monument, August 2000 The Sliven Pyramid, May 2008

This huge monument exists. It is perched on the mountain top, visible to half of Bulgaria. It was built in the course of eight years with the ‘voluntary’ labour and money of the entire Bulgarian nation. Now, no one wants to acknowledge it. Plundered and deserted, it belongs to no one. Like the ancient peoples of Babylon and Egypt, in the 1980s, the inhabitants of Sliven erected to the Sun a 15-storey hospital complex of concrete and iron. Unlike the ancient peoples, who usually immured something spiritual to make the building strong, the inhabitants of Sliven immured organically the very construction crane. On the sunny August 19th, 2008, the eastern wing of the complex was blown up with 500 kg of trotyl and finally, after 27 years, the problem was solved. There is no longer a building, there is no longer a crane, and there are no perpetrators, either. Maybe there is already a similar Buzludzha scenario.

56 – 57 Dilemma / Dilemma

Golf Course near the Town of Balchik, 2007 Natural Pastures in the Lands of Dolno Sahrane Village, Pavel Banya Municipality,

2005

Golf courses are necessary for Bulgaria – there is no doubt about it, the benefits are clear. But why don’t we learn from the best practices in leading countries where golf courses are planned and built on abandoned quarries, open mines, and deserted terrains with poor vegetation? Why do we turn centenarian ecosystems into an artificial world, planted with resilient, genetically modified grass, garnished with white stones from South America and tree species from other latitudes?

Golfplatz in der Umgebung von Balchik, 2007 Natürliche Weiden in der Umgebung des Dorfes Dolno Sachrane, Gemeinde Pavel

Banja, 2005

58 – 59 The Pirin Mountains / Pirin

62 – 63 Border / Grenze

Steffan from Austria, Bela Rechka Village, Varshets Municipality, 2008 Border Strip at the 101 Border Pyramid near Gorna Arda Village, 2007

Steffan from Vienna came to the village of Bela Rechka as a volunteer for two weeks. Together with colleagues from Bulgaria, Germany and Holland, he restored and consolidated the village rakia distillery – a gift for the village. During the lunch break, while listening to the chatter of the village river, Steffan had dozed off on the willow tree. Here, on the border strip, at the101st border pyramid, Bulgarians and foreigners used to be shot at without warning 20 years ago. Now, there is no one, neither on the Bulgarian, nor on the Greek side. Practically, there is no border, either, because both countries are in the EU. There is a time during the year when the population on both sides of the border gathers to celebrate together.

60 – 61 The Rila Mountains / Rila

Lift and road leading to the Rila Lakes Hut at 2150 m above sea level, 2008 2000 followers of Petar Danov performing the ritual dance Panevritmia, August 20th,

2008

The area of the Seven Rila Lakes is among the most beautiful places in Bulgaria. It is a holy place for the thousands of White Brotherhood followers from all over the world. The road and lift leading to the new Rila Lakes Hut at 2150 m above sea level - the final 800 meters of them – are built in violation of Bulgarian laws as no construction work is allowed within the boundaries of the Rila National Park. Somewhere among the 2000 people in white, performing Panevritmia on the plateau by the fifth lake, is the Frenchman David Moran. Here are his words: ‘I was 11 years old when I was introduced to the teachings of the White Brotherhood in my godfather’s family. Reading Mihail Ivanov’s books, and later those by Petar Danov, I told myself that Bulgaria must be a very beautiful country. It was only this year that I fulfilled my 20-year-long dream to come to Rila. Here, in the mountains, I saw a way of life that deeply touched my heart. Here, I felt so much happiness and joy, harmony and love between people in unity with nature that I wish this to continue all my life.’’

Lift und Weg bis zur Hütte „Rilaseen“ auf 2150 m Meereshöhe, 2008 2000 Anhänger von Petâr Dânov tanzen Paneurhytmie, 20. August 2008
