The Greens ReportIt's February, so hopefully that means the end of winter is in sight. February also signals to us to make sure all winter projects are complete because the growing season is right around the corner. The wet winter that we have had so far has slowed us down and has placed a lot of stress on the Greens. The winter time is the hardest time of year on the Greens with high moisture levels and very mild temperatures, which creates an environment for disease. The Greens have not been growing enough to be able to protect themselves from problems, so we are working to protect them as best we can.

In late-February/early-March we will apply our first of two fertilizer/pre-emergent applications. This first application will be

down before the soil temperatures reach levels that will promote weed seeds from germination. The two weeds that we target are Goosegrass and Crabgrass. The Crabgrass germinates around the soil

temperature of 50 degrees. Goose grass germinates when the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees. A good visual indication of when to apply pre-emergent is when the Forsythias bloom.

This can be the time for home owners to apply a pre-emergent to their yards if you so desire. The key to having a weed free yard/golf course (or as close to weed free as possible-nothing will prevent 100% of the weeds) is to prevent them from developing.

Golf Announcements

MGA

The MGA Committee is finalizing the 2020 event calendar, with the first event tentatively planned for late April. It is one of the events that is sponsored by the Men's Golf Association (MGA) throughout the year, and the MGA is the host of all men's tournaments at OCC. Annual dues are only $40 and those monies are used to offset some of the costs associated with the events. If you are new to OCC, and have yet to become a member of the MGA, please contact us in the Golf Shop to be added. If you participated in any of the MGA events in 2019 such as Blue / Red, Member-Guest, or Member-Member, your name has been added to the MGA roster, and your dues will be billed accordingly. If you would like to be a part of the MGA Committee, have ideas for events, or have any other questions, please contact the Golf Shop.
