Cycling in the Czech Republic

CharacteristicsBig differences in modal share across cities:•nearly 0 % - north-west, hilly areas•more than 20% - Moravian towns + regional capitals in lowlands or on flat terrains•Prague 1-2%•commuting everyday trips and •recreational cycling

depends on many factors - increase in cities with no historical tradition (Prague, Brno) - trendy, coolsmaller towns in Moravia - close to austria, strong policy



History of Stategic Planning • Master plans of bicycle traffic• Isolated approach - no integrated

with other transport modes• Only focused on infrastucture –

requirement: no obstacles for car traffic – only where is the space for path– cyclists out of roads – no lanes– not user friendly – no experience

with cyclists• No connection to action plan • Wish list, never implemented, not

monitored

Case of Czech Cities - 1

• Hradec Kralové (Градець-Кралове) – 100.000 inh., tradition of cycling, decreasing modal share and volumes of cycling since 90´s

• Cycling Strategy, *2012 = policy document, offers policy principles of sustainable transport, awareness rising document

Evaluation of Local Cycling Strategies

• Use principles used for evaluation of SUMPs

• Based on data available (high quality data needed)

• Set measurable targets related to objectives and vision

• Better focus on setting particular target value than a trend increase or decrease

• Examples of indicators:– modal share of cycling– safety and security of bicycle traffic– satisfaction of cyclists



Leassons Learned/ Recommendations

• Key role of local transport policy and its vision and support• Start with monitoring and high quality data collection asap• Determine realistic and achievable goals; what is the

realistic potential of cycling in your city?• Involve low cost measures which could be implemented

easily and in short time.• Bicycle is one of transport modes, it cannot be prefered

over pedestrian and public transport.• Infrastructure is not the goal, but very important tool how to

reach higher objectives• Be patient
