CHRISTMAS SEASONThe Spirit of Christmas is coming to Lviv, bringing lots of fun and an-ticipation of the upcoming festive season – now it’s time to take a break and enjoy your days filled with shopping, dining and social-ising. PAMPUKH HOLIDAYJanuary 7–9, 1 Rynok Square, (City Hall Courtyard)

During January 7–9th 2013, Lviv will hold its traditional Doughnut Festival or “Pampukh Holiday”, which is one of the most uniquely original and colorful events included in the traditional winter cel-ebrations. HALF-PRICE WEEKEND IN LVIVDecember 22–23, 2012

Within the project, “Half-price weekend” Lviv’s restaurants and hotels on the December 22-23rd weekend will offer Leopolitans and guests of the city with an extremely nice surprise – a 50% discount on goods and services. Each year the list of participants of “Half-price cut off for weekends” is constantly changing and now includes: beauty salons, boutiques, shops, night clubs and entertainment centers as well as hotels, tourist companies and many others. Singer Jamala (real name – Susana Jamaladinova) lives in Kiev, but was born in the city of Osh (Kirghi-zia). She graduated from the Kiev National Music Academy named after Tchaikovsky with a major in opera singing. Already during her studies she was interested in other music genres – jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, ethno (Crimea Tatar, Armenian etc.), which influenced her greatly and inspired her to start with music of her own. 1. World’s largest glass of beerOwners of the Auld Dubliner Irish Pub in California filled an 8-foot, 430 gal-

lon glass of beer and managed to set a Guinness record in front of an audience of 400 beer lovers. The glass alone weighs 900 pounds and the creamy delicious stout weighs 2,772 pounds.

2. World’s longest-serving bartenderAngelo Cammarata, whom the Guinness Book of World Records recognized

as the world’s longest-serving bartender. For most of his 77 years of tending bar he worked at his own Cammarata’s Cafe, which was first owned by his father, later by him and finally, by his sons. Camaratta served as bartender all of his life, taking a break during the instatement of the prohibition law, to serve in the Navy during WWII.

3. The most expensive whisky Now the definitive world record holder, a bottle of The Macallan’s 64 Years

Old Whisky in Lalique, Cire Perdue was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $460,000, becoming the most expensive whiskey in the world.

4. World record beer drinkerBeer-lover Bruce Masters (Flitwick, Bedford-

shire) has made it into the record books after the ultimate booze cruise – 44 000 pub visits around Britain and has downed more than 25 000 pints along the way.

5. The largest pub in the world The venue can be found in Munich, the Mathäs-

er has space for 5500 people and serves 48 000 L of beer each day.

6. The Great Guinness Toast On February 26th 1999, exactly at 11.00 CET,

197 648 people in restaurants and pubs in 74 cities in the USA simultaneously raised their glasses with the great Guinness toast.

CONCERT “WIENER JOHANN STRAUß KONZERT-GALA»December 17–18, beginning: 19.00. Lviv Philharmonic Concert Hall named after S.Ludkevich (7 Chaykovskogo St.)

On December 17–18th 2012, the Ukrainian-Austrian Symphonic Orchestra “K&K Philharmoniker” will perform a selection of compositions by Johann Strauss under the baton of its charismatic conductor Matthias Kendlinger. Born in 1964 in Austria, Matthias Georg Kendlinger first began receiving accordion lessons at the age of 5. From 1981 to 1994 Kendlinger appeared as a performing musician on stages throughout Europe. In 1994 he founded the private classical music marketing firm DaCapo in Kufstein. In 2002 he created his own sym-phony orchestra, the K&K Philharmonic and one year later he formed the K&K Opera Choir. The K&K Philharmoniker is a group of seventy musicians who perform around 100 concerts across Europe each year and traditionally come to Lviv several times a year. Українсько-австрійський симфонічний оркестр «K & K Philharmoniker» під керівництвом Маттіаса Кендлінгера 17–18 грудня 2012 р. виконає вибрані твори Йоганна Штрауса. Маттіас Георг Кендлінгер народився в 1964 році в Австрії де й почав навчатись грати на акордеоні з 5 років. На європейських сценах почав виступати з 1981 року, а в 1994 році він очолив оркестр класичної музики маркетингової фірми DaCapo в м. Куфштайн. For 10 days, the Hotel “Dnister” will host a series of tango-flavoured events entitled- DJ Festival Tango Remolino 2013. Highlights will include a series of day and night milon-gas, which will feature the 21 best DJs from more than 15 cities and 11 countries includ-ing: Russia, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Croa-tia, Argentina. On both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre will host the enchanting show “The Snow Queen”, a bellowed fairy tale of devotion, bravery and the triumph of love. When Gerda’s best friend Kai is bewitched and imprisoned by the mysterious Snow Queen, the young girl embarks on a journey to the land of winter to save him. With magical characters from crows to rosebushes and reindeer, Hans Christian Andersen has warmed the hearts of children and grown-ups alike around the world for almost 200 years. The in-teractive production of “The Snow Queen” will use story telling, mu-sic and even 3D technology to create a spectacular and exciting show that will capture the spirit and power of this age-old fairytale. LVIV SKATING RINKNovember 2012–March 2013, Rynok square (near City Hall)

As skating is one of the leading entertainment activities in European cities during the winter season, Lviv has established its own tradi-tion of skating rink fun – each year in the center of the city, on Rynok square a raised skating arena is mounted. Special equipment is used to ensure that the skating rink will be functional even with tempera-tures at + 15°C, due to high-technology freezers. The central loca-tion does not allow for huge dimensions, however the 30x40 meters of skating surface is usually filled with happy Leopolitans. Starting from the end of November until March 2013, Leopolitans and guests of the city have the wonderful possibility to bask in the joy of open air active sports. The skating rink will be open from 10.00 till 22.00 and will provide rental skates for those, who do not have a pair of their own. Prices are not budget-busters and vary from 40 UAH per hour. The skating arena will be supervised by instructors who will gladly help all new comers to become masters of figure skating.

По дорозі вона зустрічається з розбійниками, воронами і північним оленем, що розмовляють, та іншими персонажами, які допомагають їй у по-шуках Кая. Романтична казка Андерсена зігріває серця дітей і до-рослих усього світу вже протягом майже 200 років. КОВЗАНКА НА РИНКУ(Площа Ринок), Листопад 2012–березень 2013

Ковзани відомі в Європі ще з доісторичних часів, і ця зимова розвага користується великою популярністю й сьогодні, незва-жаючи на глобальне потепління. У Львові штучна ковзанка функ-ціонує в зимовий час вже протягом кількох років. Завдяки спеці-альному холодильному обладнанню ковзанка може працювати навіть при температурі +15°С. Незважаючи на свої відносно не-великі розміри, штучна крига приваблює десятки дорослих і ді-тей, особливо увечері та на вихідні. Починаючи з кінця листо-пада аж до березня 2013 року, львів’яни та гості міста матимуть чудову можливість відчути радість руху під відкритим небом. LEGENDARY BG IN LVIVDecember 17, beginning: 19:00Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre (28 Svobody Ave.)

On December 17th Boris Greben-shikov and his legendary band “Aquarium” will present Lviv mu-sic lovers with a special concert “4000 years: Continuance” dedi-cated to the 40th anniversary of the band’s creation. Boris Greben-shikov is one of the most promi-nent members of the generation, which are widely considered the “founding fathers” of Russian rock music. Due to his personal contri-bution, the undisputed and last-ing success of his main focus, the band Aquarium (active since 1972 until today), he is often called the ‘Grandfather of Russian Rock’. Gre-benshikov has a unique singing voice -a combination of his natural timbre with a specific vibrato with a downward expansion of range and unusual resonation acquired through training, making his voice immediately recognizable. His musical output has been rath-er prolific: in 40 years of his career he has written 500+ songs, most of which were recorded and/or performed publicly. At this point, Aquarium has 21 albums in the official discography, approximately 12 “unofficial ones”, and about as many live records. Grebenshi-kov’s individuality is undoubtedly unique, his concerts always at-tract many music lovers and ensure that each performance is sold out. 2012 has been an exciting and challenging year for Lviv. Once again it has been another year of impressive growth and development as the regional tourism industry expands and

the service sector adapts accordingly. We finally transformed the Lviv National Airport from a post-Soviet backwater into a leading regional air hub. Lviv has also successfully fulfilled its hosting responsibilities for the EURO-2012 championship. Thou-sands of football fans came to the city just for the Euro football matches, but discovered much more: a warm people, a historic city centre, beautiful girls and a tasty cuisine unlike any other! They were truly overwhelmed by the helpfulness, kindness and hospitality of the people living in Lviv. Generally, according to different poll results defining “Which EURO 2012 host city host-ed guests of the Championship the best?” Lviv received over 70% of the votes among Ukrainian and foreign News Channels and websites visitors. 2012-й рік був цікавим і складним роком для Львова. Це був ще один рік зростання і розвитку як регіональної індустрії туризму так і сфери послуг з нею пов’язаної. Львівський

аеропорт нарешті став справжнім міжнародним центром пові-тряних сполучень. Місто також успішно впоралось з прийомом гостей футбольного чемпіонату Євро-2012. Тисячі вболівальни-ків приїхали до Львова лише на футбольні матчі, але побачили тут набагато більше: щирих людей, історичний центр міста, красивих дівчат і змогли скуштувати страви європейської та національної кухні! Вони були по-справжньому вражені до-бротою, бажанням допомогти й гостинністю людей, що живуть у Львові. В цілому, за результатами різних опитувань на тему: “Яке приймаюче місто чемпіонату Євро-2012 вважати найкра-щим?” Львів отримав понад 70% голосів серед українських і зарубіжних каналів новин і відвідувачів веб-сайтів. Львів’яни ж, зі свого боку, пишаються тим, що місто показало себе здатним до проведення важливої міжнародної події і змогло показати себе з привабливої сторони, завоювати серця іно-земних футбольних фанатів, і всі вони обіцяли повернутися в наше чарівне місто! Культурне життя міста і цього року ви-рувало щорічними фестивалями і святковими програмами, серед яких не бракувало й таких смачних як весняний “Львів на тарілці» і осінній «Вино й сир”. Львівські спортсмени зроби-ли свій помітний внесок до скарбнички нагород української збірної на Олімпійських іграх в Лондоні. Наша редакція за-вжди рада розповісти про все найкраще, що відбувається у Львові та навколо нього протягом цілого року. Ми вітаємо усіх цьогорічних лауреатів відзнаки Lion Award і дякуємо їм за те, що вони зробили для перетворення Львова у прекрасне міс-це для життя. At the London 2012 Paralympics, Ukraine ended up in fourth place in the medals table, with a total of 84 medals: 32 gold, 24 silver and 28 bronze, successfully passing Beijing’s gold medal total of

24. Among the heroes of the Paralympic games is Lviv’s athlete Roman Pavlyk who competed mainly in category T36 sprint events. Pavlyk com-peted in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China and won a gold medal in the men’s 100 metres – T36 event, a gold medal in the men’s 400 metres – T36 event and a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres – T36 event. On Thursday September 6th Roman Pavlyk took the gold in the men’s 200m (T36), with a result of 24.70 seconds. Pavlyk has also won a gold medal in the men’s long jump (F36) final after a tough contest at the Olympic Stadium. The Paralympian recorded a personal best jump of 5.23m, which was enough to place him at the top of the group, to take home the gold medal. Also Roman Pavlyk picked up bronze medals in the men’s 100m and 400m (T36).

На Паралімпійських іграх-2012 в Лондоні Україна зайняла четверте місце за кількістю медалей, завоювавши їх загалом 84 – з них 32 золоті, 24 срібні і 28 бронзові, перевершивши досягнення Пекін-

ської Олімпіади, де здобули 24 медалі. Серед героїв Паралімпійських ігор Львівський спортсмен Роман Павлик, який виступає в основному в забігах категорії T36. На дистанції 400 м в подій спринт. Роман Павлик виступав на літніх Паралімпійських іграх у Пекіні 2008 року та завоював золоту медаль на дистанції 100 м, золоту медаль на дистанції 400 м та срібну медаль на дистанції 200 м – в категорії T36. У четвер, 6 вересня 2012 р. Р. Павлик завоював золото на дистанції 200 м з результатом 24,70 секунд. Він також виграв золоту медаль на Олімпійському стадіоні у стрибках у довжину (F36), встановивши персональний рекорд 5,23 м, і зайнявши перше місце у своїй групі. Крім того, Роман Павлик здобув бронзові медалі на дистанціях 100 м і 400 м (T36).

Lviv has successfully fulfilled its hosting responsibilities for the EURO-2012 championship getting tons of positive fan feedback. The European Football Championship 2012

– one of the biggest events in the region, with training that lasted for more than 5 years. Today we can confidently assert that Lviv coped with the task «excellently.» During the cham-pionship our region was visited by about 850 000 visitors and fans. The official fan zone in the centre of Lviv has beat several records - over 400 thousand people visited the Lviv fan zone, watching football there, celebrating and chanting during each match and listened to more than 50 bands performances on its main stage. This time, around the world we have garnered only words of gratitude and positive reviews. Being a successful host gave us a wealth of experience in hosting large-scale in-ternational events. This contributed to the acceptance of public decisions in Lviv, to host the European Championship Final in 2015 in basketball and the implementation in the region for the national project «Olympic Hope – 2022”.



ПОДІЯ РОКУЧЕМПІОНАТ ЄВРО-2012

Львів успішно виконав свої обов’язки господаря футбольного чемпіонату ЄВРО-2012, від якого тисячі вболівальників і гостей міста отримали безліч позитив-

них вражень. Ця спортивна подія, підготовка до якої тривала понад 5 років, стала однією з найбільших в Україні. Сьогодні можна з упевненістю стверджувати, що Львів з честю впо-рався з цим завданням. Під час чемпіонату місто відвідали близько 850 000 гостей та вболівальників. Офіційна фан-зона в центрі Львова побила кількох рекордів – її відвідали понад 400 тисяч осіб, які дивились футбольні матчі, святкували перемоги своїх команд і прослухали понад 50 ансамблів на великій сцені. З усього світу надходили й продовжують надходити слова подяки організаторам та позитивні відгуки. Успішне проведення чемпіонату дало господарям величез-ний досвід у проведенні міжнародних заходів такого масш-табу. Наслідком цього можна вважати прийняття державних рішень про проведення у Львові фіналу європейського чемпіонату з баскетболу в 2015 році і реалізації в області на-ціонального проекту «Олімпійська надія–2022».



ARRIVAL OF THE YEARNEW AIRPORT

On April 12th 2012, President Viktor Yanukovych and UEFA President Michel Platini took part in the opening ceremony of a new terminal at the Lviv Danylo Halytsky International Airport, which was constructed as part of the preparations for the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.The airport building itself consists of two areas of various sizes: the main passenger and technological area and the communications and assistance gallery. The waiting rooms,

check-in areas and baggage handling areas are situated in the central part of the building on the first floor, while customs control, border control and aviation safety control are housed on the second and third floors. The technical and reserve areas are housed in the gallery, alongside with service offices. The commercial part in the terminal occupies 1,083 square metres (commerce and food courts), and airline offices occupy 627 square metres. A total of 29 lanes for passenger check-in, 18 lanes for passport control and 9 control points for aviation security are all operational. The flight information system displayed on screens is FIDS and the equipment systems are those of BMS, ODB, CUTE and BHS. The renovated airport aims to serve class А, В, С and D (like the Boeing-767) aircraft.



НОВОБУДОВА РОКУМІЖНАРОДНИЙ АЕРОПОРТ

12 квітня 2012 Президент України Віктор Янукович і президент УЄФА Мішель Платіні взяли участь у церемонії відкриття нового терміналу Львівського між-народного аеропорту ім. Данила Галицького, зведеного в рамках підготовки до чемпіонату Європи з футболу Євро-2012. Будівля аеропорту складається з двох частин різного розміру: основної пасажирської і технологічної зони та комунікаційної допоміжної галереї. Зали очікування, стійки реєстрації,

обробки багажу розташовані в центральній частині будівлі на першому поверсі, а митний, прикордонний контроль та відділ авіаційної безпеки розташовані на другому і третьому поверхах. Технічні та резервні зони розташовані в галереї поряд зі службовими приміщеннями. Під офіси та громадське харчування відведено 1083 м2, представництва авіакомпаній займають приміщення площею 627 м2. Всього в новому аеропорту передбачено 29 стійок реєстрації паса-жирів, 18 пунктів паспортного контролю і 9 пунктів для забезпечення авіаційної безпеки. Система інформації про рейси, що прибувають і відправляються, висвітлюється на моніторах в пасажирській зоні. Оновлений аеропорт може обслуговувати літаки класів А, В, С і D (типу Boeing-767).


CULTURAL AMBASSADOREXHIBITION OF JOHANN GEORGE PINSEL’S SCULPTURES IN LOUVRE MUSEUM IN PARIS

From November 21, 2012 to February 25, 2013, the Louvre Museum in Paris will display a new exhibition of Johann George Pinsel’s sculpture work in the Salle de la Chapelle. The first Ukrainian art exhibition in the

Louvre is an unprecedented event that introduces the world to the master-pieces of Ukrainian Baroque sculptor Pinzel, who is often compared to the great Gian Lorenzo Bernini and even to Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonar-roti. The exhibit was kindly provided by Lviv’s Museum of Sacral Baroque Sculpture which showcases 32 unique exhibits representing art on a Europe-an and international level. Unfortunately information on Pinzel’s life and art is very scarce, that is why researchers divide on the issue of his nationality, attributing Pinzel Bavarian, Bohemian, Silesian, Italian or Ukrainian origins. Some even believe he could have escaped from Europe to run away from his past and start a new life in Western Ukraine incognito which he successfully accomplished. Under the patronage and financial support of Kanev leader Mykola Pototskiy, Pinzel and his long-term partner, architect Bernard Meretyn, created and decorated many sacral houses in Western Ukraine. There are very few of Pinzel’s masterpieces that have been found and identified so far, and the majority of them are included in the collection in the Lviv Sacral Baroque Sculpture Museum. It is known that at the end of the 1750s, Pinzel created the sculptural ensemble in the St. George Cathedral in Lviv; worked in Lviv’s St. Martin Church; as well as in Monastyrys’ka in Ternopil region.

Музей Лувр у Парижі з 21 листопада 2012 по 25 лютого 2013 року відкрив нову виставку скульптур Іоанна Георга Пінзеля в каплиці ля Шапель. Перша українська художня виставка у Луврі є безпре-

цедентною подією, що відкриває світ шедеврів українського скульптора доби бароко Пінзеля, якого часто порівнюють із великим Джан Лоренцо Берніні і навіть Мікеланджело ді Лодовіко Буонарроті. Експонати для виставки надані Львівським музеєм сакральної барокової скульптури та іншими українськими музеями. На жаль, інформації про життя і творчість Пінзеля є дуже мало, і тому дослідники розходяться в думках, припи-суючи Пінзелеві баварське, чеське, сілезьке, італійське чи українське походження. Існують також припущення, що він міг втекти з Європи від

свого минулого і почати нове життя в Західній Україні інкогніто, що йому успішно вдалось. Під покровительством і за фінансової підтримки тодішнього Канівського старости Миколи Потоцького, Пінзель зі своїм партнером, архі-тектором Бернардом Меретином, створив і оздобив багато сакраль-них споруд в Західній Україні. На жаль, дуже мало шедеврів Пінзеля було знайдено та ідентифіковано досі, але більшість з них увійшли в колекцію Львівського музею сакральної барокової скульптури. Відомо, що в кінці 1750-х років, Пінзель створив скульптурний ансамбль собору св. Юра у Львові, працював у Львівському соборі св. Мартина, а також в церквах Тернопільської області.



SPORTS PERSONALITYOF THE YEARGOLD MEDAL WINNER FENCER YANA SHEMYAKINA

The charming graduate from the Lviv State University of Physical Culture: Yana Shemyakina is also the gold medal winner at the European cham-pionship in Zalaegerszeg (2005). Shemyakina took part in the 2008

Olympic Games in Beijing, however she failed to bring home any awards. The following year Shemyakina won the bronze medal at the European champi-onship in Plovdiv (2009) and started active training for the London Olympics. Among her latest achievements is a bronze medal at the 2nd World Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro, which took place in Brazil just before the Olympics. Despite huge ambitions, the London 2012 Olympics turned out to be something of a Ukrainian modest success story, with the team finishing 14th in the overall rankings with a grand total of 20 medals. Ukraine’s athletes won a total of 6 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze medals with Lviv’s athletes doing more than their share of the winning in London, with our local hero fencer Yana Shemyakina. Twelfth seed Shemyakina, who was 18th at the Beijing Games four years ago, worked her way through the preliminaries with two key victories over top-ranked Romanian fencers. She beat fifth seed Ana Maria Branza and then knocked out another Romanian in fourth-ranked Simona Gherman. Shemyakina beat defending champion Britta Heidemann of Germany 9-8 to win the Olympic gold medal in the women’s individual epee earning Ukraine first gold medal at the Olympics.

СПОРТИВНАОСОБИСТІСТЬ РОКУФЕХТУВАЛЬНИЦЯ ЯНА ШЕМЯКІНА

Випускниця Львівського державного університету фізичної культури Яна Шемякіна здобула золоту медаль на чемпіонаті Європи в За-лаегерсег (2005 р., Угорщина), виступала в Олімпійських іграх 2008

року в Пекіні, хоча й вона не привезла додому жодної нагороди. Через рік Шемякіна завоювала бронзову медаль на чемпіонаті Європи в Плов-диві (2009 р., Болгарія) і розпочала активну підготовку до лондонської Олімпіади-2012. Серед її останніх досягнень є бронзова медаль на 2-му фінальному етапі Кубка світу в Ріо-де-Жанейро, який проходив у Бразилії якраз перед Олімпіадою. У загальному заліку на лондонській Олімпіаді українська команда фехтувальників досягла скромного успіху посівши 14-е місце в загальному рейтингу, здобувши всього 20 медалей. Спортс-мени України завоювали 6 золотих, 5 срібних і 9 бронзових медалей. Честь Львова в Лондоні захистила зі зброєю в руках (хоч і спортивною) фехтувальниця Яна Шемякіна. Посіяна дванадцятою Шемякіна, яка була вісімнадцятою на Іграх в Пекіні чотири роки перед цим, проклала собі шлях через відбіркові змагання з двома ключовими перемогами над сильними румунськими спортсменками. Вона перемогла п’яту посіяну Ана-Марію Бранзу, а потім ще й Симону Герман з четвертого місця. У фінальному поєдинку Шемякіна здобула нелегку перемогу в двобої з чемпіонкою Бріттою Хайдеманн з Німеччини з рахунком 9-8, і здобула для України першу олімпійську золоту медаль в індивідуальному заліку серед фехтувальниць на шпагах.



ART EVENTOF THE YEAR 2012PREMIERE OF BALLET LE CORSAIR

On October 27, Lviv’s National Opera Theatre presented a splendid premiere of “Le Corsaire” (music by Adolphe Adam), an adaptation of the classical ballet directed by

the talented young choreographer Yulianna Malhasyants, a Lviv native whose theatrical career has blossomed in the Russian capital. The original version of “Le Corsaire “ was first staged in Lviv in 1950. Audiences raved about the costumes featured in the new “Le Corsaire”, performance, with each of the over 200 characters richly adorned in period attire thanks to the great work of Lviv costumier Khrystyna Kozak. A modern version of the performance showcased a splendid light show featur-ing storms and stress weather made by equipment specially purchased from Japan.

У Львівському Національному оперному театрі 27 жовтня відбулась прем’єра балету «Корсар» (на музику Адольфа Адана) в постановці молодого талановитого

хореографа Юліанни Малхасянц, яка народилась у Львові, чия театральна кар’єра розцвіла в столиці Росії. Вперше цей спектакль був поставлений у Львові в 1950 році. Великому успіху нової постановки значною мірою сприяли костюми, яких виготовили понад дві сотні під керівництвом костю-мера театру Христини Козак. Чудове виконання артистів театру у супроводі оркестру і сучасне світлозвукове об-ладнання японського виробництва, яке чудово створювало ілюзію бурі й негоди, не залишило глядачів байдужими.



NEW TOURIST ATTRACTION 2012«COFFEE MANUFACTURE»

The Coffee Manufacture (10, Rynok square, Lviv), is Lviv’s biggest coffee house, which is dedicated to the history of coffee in the city. In 1683, when Yuriy Kulchytskiy, a native of Lviv, opened the first coffee house in Vienna, starting a tradition that eventually came back to his home town. There is so much coffee in Lviv that the city was named the coffee capital of Ukraine. Touristy and often crowded, “Coffee Manufacture“ cashes in on Lviv’s coffee craze. The

place was designed as a large coffee factory with a “coffee mine” below ground. You can watch coffee beans being ground as you enter the first hall of the café. Upstairs you can enjoy some coffee and sweets in the non-smoking dining area. Or head below to see where coffee comes from. Down in the “coffee mine” you can also enjoy a coffee, but the only light there will be from the miner’s helmet that you’ll be given on the way down. “Coffee Manufacture” also offers coffee-based souvenirs for purchase: coffee beans, ground coffee and all things related to the famed bean.

LVIV HERITAGE AWARD 2012ARMENIAN CHURCH

The incredibly unique masterpiece – the wooden altar “Golgotha” will be returned back to its place in the courtyard of the Armenian Cathedral by the end of this year. Presently a team of Ukrainian and Polish restorers are working at the Cathedral, conducting a series of renovations, which are

financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (which provided over 600 thousand UAH) and the Lviv City Hall. After restoration the altar will look even better, as the missing figure of the Mother of God was found in the Lviv’s National Museum storage depot and was returned to its rightful place. Also, at the moment Cathedral’s frescoes are being restored, as well the wooden Calvary was preserved, which was previously located over the entrance. In the future, the original of the Calvary will be placed within the Cathedral, and the entrance will be decorated with a copy.

ІСТОРИЧНА СПАДЩИНА 2012ВІРМЕНСЬКА ЦЕРКВА

Унікальний шедевр – дерев’яний вівтар «Голгофа», який знаходився у дворі Вірменського собору, має поверну-тись після реставрації до Львова ще до кінця цього року.

Сьогодні українські та польські реставратори спільно працюють в храмі, проводячи реконструкцію, яка фінансується польським Міністерством культури і національної спадщини (це понад 600 тис. грн.) та Львівською міською радою. На реставрований вівтар буде повернена також фігура Божої матері, яку віднайшли в за-пасниках Національного музею. Крім того, у храмі виконується відновлення фресок, а також планується перенести всередину храму дерев’яне розп’яття, що висіло над входом, а на його місці буде встановлена копія.

How to be №1? Lviv’s “Metro” club knows the secret – and it is pretty easy way. To gather huge community of over 105 thousand

of devoted fans in world’s most popular social network Facebook, one should firstly, offer high quality and actual photo and video content. As second element of the success comes constant socializing with each member of the community. One should always be one step ahead of the competitors, be active in the implementation of innovations and follow l the dynamic pulse of the citylife. This year, during EURO 2012 champion-ship, activity of the club and it’s members helped venue to get to the leading position among city’s tourist attractions, and was highly recommended for visiting at evening/night parties by popular tourist service Tripadvisor. However, if you take something, you should also give back something, thus solving of the social issues via active support of the fans is another rule of the club’s success. Within joint project with Maltese Aid Service “Give Your voice to abandoned child” 77 children got their beds for total amount of 85894 UAH. And one, and the most important rule is to come “offline”, meet virtual fans in real life, become true friends and nether doubt own leadership.

RELIGIOUS HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEARJESUITS CHURCH REOPENING

Located with its back turned to Svobody Ave. and the monument of Тaras Shevchenko, this is considered one of the more mystical places in Lviv. The church was constructed in the beginning of the 17th century by Italian architect Jacopo Briano and is modeled after the classicsl Church of the Gesù in Rome. It is the first monument

of baroque architecture in Lviv and is one of the largest religious buildings in the city. For many years the premises were occupied by the Lviv Scientific Library and is partially used as an Archival Library. 65 years after it was closed by the Soviets, the Jesuit Church of Saints Peter and Paul was consecrated and re-opened. The church is maintained by clergymen of the military chaplain of the curia by the Lviv Archdiocese of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Розташований у самому центрі міста, поруч з пам’ятником Т. Шевченку, костел єзуїтів вважається одним з найбільш містичних місць у Львові. Собор був споруджений на початку 17 століття за проектом італій-ського архітектора Джакомо Бріано і за зразком собору дель Джезу в Римі. Це перша споруда архітектури

бароко у Львові і одна з найбільших культових споруд в місті. Протягом багатьох років його приміщення займав архів Львівської наукової бібліотеки. Після того, як культова споруда простояла зачиненою 65 років, собор святих Петра і Павла був освячений і знову відкритий. Тепер він знаходиться у віданні військового капелана Львівської архиєпархії Української греко-католицької церкви.


FESTIVALOF THE YEAR 2012GASTRONOMIC FEST “LVIV ON A PLATE”

During April 20-22nd 2012, Lviv held the Gastronomic Festival “Lviv on a plate” where for the fist time in Ukraine our city was represented as the gastronomic capital of Ukraine. The festival started on April 20, 2012

with an elegant open-air dinner for 300 guests featuring traditional Halycian cuisine and entertainment. Among guests of the remarkable event were city restaurateurs as well as many recognized Lviv personalities, celebri-ties, businessmen and politicians. From April 21-22nd 2012 in the Pototsky palace courtyard a fair-presentation of Lviv cuisine took place, offering visitors a unique possibility to taste exquisite and delicious dishes by the best head-chefs of bars, coffee houses, bakeries and restaurants. Also during the fair-presentation, children could participate in culinary master-classes, while grown-ups enjoyed tasty dishes by Lviv’s restaurants while listening to concerts by local bands.

Вперше в Україні наше місто було представлене як гастрономічна столиця України 20-22 квітня 2012 р. на гастрономічному фестивалі «Львів на тарілці», який відкрився вечерею на 300 гостей під відкри-

тим небом з традиційною галицькою кухнею і розвагами. Серед гостей цієї події були відомі ресторатори міста, а також багатознаних особистос-тей Львова, бізнесменів, політиків. Протягом двох днів у дворі палацу По-тоцьких відбувався ярмарок-презентація Львівської кухні, пропонуючи відвідувачам унікальну можливість продегустувати вишукані та смачні страви від найкращих шеф-кухарів місцевих ресторанів, барів, кафе та пекарень. Також під час презентацій діти могли брати участь в кулінар-них майстер-класах, поки дорослі насолоджувалися смачними стравами у ресторанах Львова та на концертах різноманітних гуртів.

“MISS LVIV 2013”On November 29th 2012, the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre hosted the grand finale show of the “Miss Lviv 2013” beauty con-test. The annual contest brought together prominent businessmen, politicians, media representatives, fashion designers, artists, and those who would decide who will rep-resent Lviv at Miss Ukraine-2013 in Kiev at the end of March. The finals featured lots of glamour including a fashion show by recog-nized designers Anna Bublyk and Olexander Shkarupsky, performances by Vasyl Bondar-chuk, Olesya Kirichuk, virtuoso violin player Oleksandr Bozhik and bands like “Hot Choc-olate” and “Freestyle”.The casting was attended by several hun-dred beautiful young women, of which 14 were selected to compete in the final. Ma-rine Agababova was chosen as Vice Miss, while Yana Zelman was named as the 2nd Vice Miss and finally, Kornelia Gotra was crowned as “Miss Lviv 2013”. Among other nominees were also Olena Svidnytska who won title “Miss Congeniality”, Solomiya Stet-siv won “Miss Bikini”, while the “Miss Photo” title was won by Natalya Didyk.

“Гарячий Шоколад” і “Фрістайл”. Ще одною окрасою вечора стало модне дефіле учас-ниць в сукнях відомих дизайнерів Ганни Бублик та Олександра Шкарупського. У відбіркових переглядах взяли участь кіль-ка сотень красивих дівчат, з яких лише 14 потрапили до фіналу. Першою віце-міс стала Маріне Аґабабова, другою віце-міс – Яна Зельман і, нарешті, «Міс Львів 2013» стала Корнелія Готра. В інших номінаціях були відзначені, зокрема, Олена Свиди-ницька – “Міс громадських Симпатій “, Со-ломія Стеців завоювала титул “Міс Бікіні”, а

“Міс Фото” стала Наталя Дідик.

ВИСТАВКА ІГРИ РОЗУМУВиставка під назвою «Ігри розуму» англійської художниці Люсі Макадам Фрейд – пра-правнучки засновника психоаналізу Зиг-мунда Фрейда – відкрилась у галереї Гері Боумена 15 листопада. За словами Люсі, її колекція має подвійне значення. Це і в прямо-му і переносному розумінні «ігри розуму» – інтелектуальні ігри, як покер або шахи чи інші ігри, в які люди грають, як соціальні іс-тоти. «Для цієї колекції, я спеціально вибрала техніку монопрінту, яка найбільш відповідну до теми: перед створенням образу по-трібно ретельно все продумати, спланувати і оцінити – подібно до обчислення ризиків в інтелектуальній грі», пояснює Люсі Ма-кадам Фрейд. У своїй творчості вона також часто використовує перформенси, інсталяції та кіно. Картини Люсі Макадам Фрейд експонувались на багатьох виставках, серед яких Mayfair Art Club, Mall Galleries, Originals Contemporary Printmaking Show, Anglo MockBa 2009 та інші. Її роботи також виставлялись на міжнарод-них аукціонах Christies, Bonhams і Sotheby `s. До речі, батько Люсі був також художником, який працював у реалістичній манері і відомий надзвичайно правдивим зображенням портретів людей.

MIND GAMES EXHIBITIONOn November 15th 2012 at the Gary Bowman Art Gallery, (18 Nalyvaika St.) the exhibition “Mind Games” by Lucy McAdam Freud – the great-granddaughter of the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud was presented to the public. The Freud great-granddaughter is one of the most ingenious and highly paid artists of today. Lucy describes her collection as such that it has a double meaning. It represents both the literal and figurative meaning of the phrase “mind games” – intellectual games like poker or chess and games people play as social beings.

“For this collection specifically I chose the mono-print technique as it most corre-lates with the theme: before creating an image one has to thoroughly think eve-rything through, plan and evaluate – just like you deduct risks in an intellectual game”, explains Lucy McAdam Freud. Previously the images by Lucy McAdam Freud went on display at the Mayfair Art Club, Mall Galleries, Originals Contem-porary Printmaking Show, and at the Royal Academy Schools. Her works have been sold at Christies, Bonhams and Sotheby’s. Interestingly, Lucy’s father was also a painter, who created images in the realm of the realism artistic movement and is known for an extremely truthful portrayal of people in his portraits.

ЩОРІЧНИЙ ТУРИСТИЧНИЙ ФОРУМЧетвертий туристичний форум «Перемагай з Левом» відбувся на стадіоні «Арена Львів» 21–22 листопада 2012 р. На ньому зібрались провідні експерти галузі туризму з Європи і України, щоб обгово-рити найбільш перспективні сьогодні напрямки туризму: діловий туризм і організацію мега-подій. В рамках форуму були проведені численні презентації та сесії запитань і відповідей, семінар ETOA, майстер-класи, інтерактивні заняття та низка інших заходів. У фору-мі взяли участь понад 200 представників туристичної індустрії з усіх куточків України та 10 зарубіжних 10 країн. Вони заслухали доповіді експертів з різних європейських міст – зокрема, Барселони, Лондо-на, Генуї, Берліна про те, як ці міста ставали провідними туристич-ними центрами світу, і одними з перших почули результати про-ведення Олімпійських ігор в Лондоні. У форумі також взяли участь місцеві високопосадовці - мер Львова Андрій Садовий; начальник відділу зовнішньоекономічних зв’язків та інвестицій Львівської міської ради Сергій Кіраль; керівник департаменту «Євро-2012» Олег Засадний; начальник Львівського туристичного інформацій-ного центру Олена Голишева; радник мера з питань туризму і куль-тури, президент неурядової організації «Етновир»Андрій Сидор, та інші. Організатори форуму планують надалі розвивати і розширю-вати коло учасників і сферу його діяльності, адже форум – це не тільки місце, де професіонали індустрії туризму діляться та обмі-нюються своїм досвідом, а ще й мають можливість розпочати нову співпрацю з міжнародними партнерами.

ANNUAL TOURIST FORUMDuring November 21–22nd 2012, ”Arena Lviv” Stadium hosted the 4th Annual Tourism Forum “Win With The Lion” 2012. Leading travel experts from Europe and Ukraine gathered to discuss two of the most promising tourist issues of today: business tourism and organ-izing mega-events. This year’s forum showcased numerous pres-entations and Q&A sessions, an ETOA seminar, tourism workshops, interactive sessions and other networking events. Over 200 people attended the forum from 10 countries, which included representa-tives of the tourism industry from all over Ukraine and abroad. They all had the opportunity to hear the report of experts from various European cities, including Barcelona, London, Genoa, and Berlin, and about how these cities have become the leading tourist centres of the world. Guests of the forum were among the first to hear about the results London garnered by hosting a mega-event: the Olym-pic Games. The forum was attended by major Lviv city hall decision makers – Andriy Sadovyi – Lviv Mayor; Serhiy Kiral – Head of foreign economic relations and investment office of Lviv City Council; Oleh Zasadnyy – Head of the Department “EURO 2012”; Olena Holysheva – Head of the Lviv Tourist Information Center; Andriy Sydor – advisor to the Mayor on tourism and culture, President of the Non-Govern-mental Organization “Etnovyr” and many others. Organizers promise that this tourism forum in Lviv will continue and evolve with an even greater scope. After all the forum is not only a place where profes-sionals in the tourism industry can share their experience, but also a place where members of the tourism industry have the opportunity to start cooperation with many international partners.

UKRAINE INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES TURNS 20On November 30, 2012 Lviv’s restaurant “Dynamo Blues” hosted birthday party dedicated to 20th anniversary of Ukraine International Airlines. Festive event brought to-gether representatives of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk sales agencies. Party was full of pleasant surprises – organizers of the event engaged guests into jolly contest with lots of questions about history, achievements and successful facts of UIA and awarded winners with gifts. Lucky win-ners were presented with tickets to the upcoming concert of popular singer Nino Katzmadze at Lviv’s Opera Theatre, while other participants of the contest got special gifts from the company. UkRAINE’S TITLES 2012From November 10–11th 2012, Lviv’s Sport Complex

“Grace” hosted the Ukrainian Championship and Inter-national Competition of Athletic Dance “Ukraine’s Titles 2012”. Dance teams from Belarus, Moldova, Poland, Rus-sia, Romania, Hungary and Georgia, as well as teams from several Ukrainian regions and cities all traveled to Lviv especially for this competition. The head juror of this year’s competition was internationally renowned Irena Bus (Lviv) who had to choose the best dancers in the categories: WDSF Youth Open Standard and WDSF Youth Open Latin. The winners of the Youth Open Standard category were Orest Markevich and Nataliya Gornostay (Ukraine) while in the Youth Open Latin category, Robert Poklitar and Anastasiia Sainiuk (Ukraine).

ТИТУЛИ УКРАЇНИ-2012У Львівському спортивному комплексі «Грація» 10–11 листопада 2012 р. пройшов чемпіонат України та Між-народні змагання зі спортивних танців «Титули Укра-їни-2012». На конкурс до Львова приїхали команди з Білорусі, Молдови, Польщі, Росії, Румунії, Угорщини, Грузії, а також команди з кількох українських регіо-нів та міст. Головою журі цьогорічного конкурсу була суддя міжнародної категорії Ірена Бусь (Львів), до обов’язків якої входило визначення найкращих тан-цюристів в категоріях WDSF Youth Open Standard (пе-реможці – Орест Маркевич і Наталя Горностай (Укра-їна), і WDSF Youth Open Latin (переможці – Роберт Поклітар і Анастасія Сайнюк (Україна).

How to make sure your Ukrainian business partner is trustworthy?It is no secret that Ukrainian business traditions are only establishing. For this reason it may be recommended to:Check information regarding Ukrainian counterparty in United state register of legal entities and individuals-en-trepreneurs (USR) to identify the status of the company. USR is available online on following link http://irc.gov.ua/ua/Poshuk-v-YeDR.html and anyone can use it in order to check if the Ukrainian counterparty is not in the process of bankruptcy/liquidation; to check its legal address/phone and the name of director, identification number.It is also advisable to order hard copy excerpt from USR which also will contain information about date of compa-ny’s founding, its shareholders, statutory fund and powers of the manager conclude certain agreements without ap-proval of shareholders or the supervisory board. This will help to understand when the company was established, what is the amount of statutory fund enough to satisfy potential claims, who are company’s founders and share-holders.Ask the Ukrainian counterparty to provide you with copies of effective charter. USR may not always contain full infor-mation about director’s powers limitations and sometimes only the charter allows to understand what company’s body is empowered to conclude contracts exceeding cer-tain amounts. This is important to mitigate the risks of further invalidation of agreement on the basis of defect of representation powers.Check information regarding Ukrainian counterparty in VAT Payers Register (http://sts.gov.ua/reestr) and in Register containing information on indebtedness of taxes payments (http://sts.gov.ua/businesspartner) which are available online on State Tax Service website. JOINT CUSTOMS COMMITTEEEBA Joint Customs Committee and EBA Brussels office meeting was held 29th of November 2012 at the EBA office in Lviv. The meeting was held in a video-conference format. The agenda of the meet-ing included the discussion on European practice of Customs post audit. As a review of the main provi-sions of European Customs post audits legislation, expert from EU side, Partner at VAN BAEL & BELLIS Company from Brussels Mr. Pablo Muñiz prepared detailed analysis of the most prominent issues in Eu-ropean practice of Customs post audit, among them:

• Community Customs Code;• Development and length of the procedure ;• Interim and precautionary measures;• Co-operation obligations;• Opening of the inspection and its activities;• Scope of the procedure ;• OLAF (EU Anti-Fraud Office), role of OLAF and procedure followed by OLAF;

• Discrepancies between EU Member StatesIn the course of the meeting, EBA members had an opportunity to get firsthand answers from the Mr. Muñiz, who actively participated in the discussion and provided professional comments and recom-mendations to the participants of the meeting.

JOINT MANAGEMENT, MANUFACTURING AND HR COMMITTEEEBA Joint Management, Manufacturing and HR Committee meeting was held at the EBA office in Lviv 28th of November 2012.Invited speakers of the meeting: Anastasia Kolo-mojtseva, Legal adviser at legal company DK-PRAVO, Nexia DK; Oksana Ivany-chuk, Deputy of the Head of the Employment Lviv Centre, Ulyana Vityk, Legal adviser at legal company DK-PRAVO, Nexia DK.Khrystyna Onyshchenko, EBA Management Committee vice-chairman launched the discussion with the recent changes in new employment leg-islation and briefly outlined practical aspects of migration procedures. After, Ulyana Vityk prepared detailed analysis of major changes and new provisions in the legislation and introduced legislative changes concern-ing the foreigners residence and on registration of temporary residence permit on the basis of family reunification with a foreign citizen and a citizen of Ukraine.Oksana Ivanychuk, Deputy of the Head of the Employment Lviv Centre informed the audience about the financial motivation of employers and stimulation of business development in the new law.In conclusion, Anastasia Kolomoytseva highlighted the new provisions of the law on foreigners and stateless persons work and described the control over the observance of legislation on employment and responsibil-ity for its violations.

TAX, ACCOUNTING AND MANUFACTURING COMMITTEES27th of November 2012, EBA in Western Ukraine held the outdoor meeting of Tax and Accounting and Manufacturing Committees at the EBA-member company Mathai Ukraine – production of hair guides. Natalia Smutok, Director of Matai Ukraine, was a hostess of the event. According to her interesting presentation the participants got acquainted with the company’s activity, manu-facturing and accounting systems. During the meeting, Mrs Smutok stressed that the personnel is one of the important instrument in the enterprise as the lion’s share of the quality of the product depends on their quality and productive work. Therefore, the company Mathai Ukraine daily works on the improvement of motivation and stimulation systems in HR management. The outdoor meeting passed in very active and friendly atmosphere. EBA office in Western Ukraine on behalf of EBA members expresses its gratitude to Mathai Ukraine for sharing experience and nice event.
