内陸と海上を結ぶ水郷の港町として栄え、宿場町として賑わい、そして伊勢国の東の入口でもあった桑名。商都から近代都市へと発展した現在、いくつもの鉄道、自動車道が縦横に走り抜けています。

Kuwana has long prospered as a riverside port town linking thesea and the land, a post town, and an east entrance to theprovince of Ise. It has developed into a busy modern city with anumber of railroads and motorways running through it.

宿場町・桑名は、参勤交代の大名や旅人、伝馬や荷車など、

様々な人と物が往来して賑わってきました。

「七里の渡」から「町屋川」までの間にみなぎっていたのは、

人々を温かくもてなす心配り。

それが桑名宿の繁栄をもたらしたのです。

江戸幕府は交通路整備に力を

注ぎ、慶長６年（１６０１）

から寛永年間（１６２４│

１６４３）に重要な街道に宿駅を制定

しました。古くから内陸と海上を結ぶ

水郷の港町として開けていた桑名も、

慶長６年に東海道42番目の宿駅として

伝馬が配され、宿場町として発展。伊

勢国の東の入り口でもあった桑名宿

は、本陣２軒、脇本陣４軒、一般宿１

２０軒があり、宿の多さでは五十三次

中、第２位を誇る賑わいでした。

The Edo Shogunate focused on the development of traffic routes andestablished a post town system from 1601 to 1643. As the 42nd posttown on the Tokaido road, horses to facilitate the movement ofgovernment officials and the dissemination of information werestationed in Kuwana. Kuwana, which developed as a post town andthe east entrance to the province of Ise, had the second largestnumber of inns among the 53 post towns.

七里の渡跡

この界隈は宿場町の賑わいを極め、「伊勢国一の鳥居」と称された大鳥居は、伊勢神宮遷宮ごとに建て替えられています。県指定文化財です。

This grand torii (a gateway to aShinto shrine), known as “TheGreatest Torii in the Province of Ise,”was rebuilt every time the Ise Shrinewas reconstructed, and its sacredsymbol of a deity was reinstalled inthe new shrine. It is designated acultural asset by Mie Prefecture.

In the precincts of the temple aremany stone tablets inscribed withhaiku, including one with Basho’shaiku, a cultural asset of the city, andthose with haiku by successivepresidents of the Kuwana HaikuSociety.

市指定文化財である芭蕉の句碑「今日斗り人も年よれ初時雨」をはじめ、雲裡坊杉夫から続く桑名の俳句結社・間遠社の歴代社長句碑があります。

県の文化財に指定されている萬古焼の創始者・沼波弄山（ぬなみろうざん）の墓や、萬古焼継承者加賀月華らの墓があり、春には彼岸桜、薄墨桜が咲き誇ります。

This is the grave of Rozan Nunami, afounder of Banko ware, a prefecturalcultural asset.


This is the main shrine dedicated to Kuwana’s guardian gods,comprising Kuwana Shrine and Nakatomi Shrine. Ishidori Festivalused to be one of the Shinto rituals in the grand festival calledHiyori Festival of the Kuwana Shrine. There is a bronze torii, adesignated prefectural cultural asset, in front of Kasuga Shrine.


桑名の総鎮守です。「桑名神社」「中臣神社」からなり、両社とも延喜式に記載された古い神社です。石取祭は桑名神社の大祭「比与利祭」の神事のひとつが独立したものであり、桑名神社神楽太鼓の叩き出しを合図に始まります。鎌倉時代に奈良から春日大明神を勧請して合祀。「春日さん」の名で親しまれ、県指定文化財の青銅鳥居が建っています。

馬をつなぐ鉄環、連子格子の家が残り、火の見櫓が復元され、人足が馬や駕籠（かご）を止め、旅人が茶店でくつろぐ昔日の面影が目に浮かんできます。

In this old district, one can find tracesof the past in the iron rings to tiehorses, lattice windows and doors,and a restored fire watchtower.

「寛政の改革」で知られる松平定信が描いた「朱達磨」などの絵画をはじめ、桑名藩や萬古焼関係の収蔵品が展示されています。独自の企画展示も好評で、桑名の郷土文化を学べる博物館です。

The museum showcases artifactsfeaturing paintings by SadanobuMatsudaira and those related to theKuwana clan and Banko ware.

開創400年の歴史を刻み、徳川家茂や明治天皇が宿泊した古刹です。風格のある本堂や、芭蕉が詠んだ「冬牡丹の句碑」など、見どころがあります。

Iemochi Tokugawa and the MeijiEmperor used this historic old templeas a temporary lodging place. A stonetablet is inscribed with Basho’s haikuon winter peony.

木曽三川の難しい治水工事は完成したものの、巨額の出費と多大な犠牲者の責任から薩摩藩工事総奉行の平田靭負（ひらたゆきえ）が自害。寺には靭負の供養塔や市指定文化財の薩摩義士の墓所があります。

The temple houses a memorial tower for the soul ofYukie Hirata, the Satsuma clan’s constructionmagistrate, who killed himself to take responsibilityfor the costs of the Kiso Sansen (three rivers in Kiso)flood-control works and flood victims. There is also amausoleum for Satsuma’s loyal retainers, a culturalasset designated by the city.

室町時代に「江の奥殿」と呼ばれた矢部氏の屋敷が、杜若池を中心に築庭され、明治時代に大実業家・諸戸清六の所有となりました。西隣に新しく御殿を建て、庭園が拡張されました。建造物は国・県・市の文化財、庭園は国の名勝に指定されています。

The residence of the Yabe family was called “E-no-Okuden” in the Muromachiperiod. Seiroku Moroto, a successful businessman, obtained the place in theMeiji period. The buildings are designated cultural assets by the country, theprefecture and the city, while the garden is designated a national place of scenicbeauty.

Rokkaen

六　　華　　苑

二代目諸戸清六の邸宅として大正２年（1913年）に完成。本苑は、鹿鳴館の設計者であるイギリス人建築家ジョサイア・コンドル設計による４層の塔屋を持つ洋館、和館や蔵、国の名勝に指定されている池泉回遊式庭園などがあります。和洋の様式が調和した貴重な文化遺産であり、国の重要文化財に指定されています。

Built in 1913 as a residence for the second Seiroku Moroto, the compoundcomprises buildings in Western style designed by the British architect JosiahConder, Japanese-style buildings and storehouses, and a circuit style gardenwith a pond, a designated national place of scenic beauty. The whole place isdesignated an important national cultural asset.

【文化遺産】

桑名三代藩主松平定勝が死去したため、その子定行が創建。定行は伊予松山へ移封、弟定綱が藩主を継ぎ、松平家の菩提寺として存続しました。藩主ら26基の墓があります。

This temple was founded by the fourthKuwana clan, Sadayuki Matsudaira.Later, his younger brother, Sadatsuna,became clan leader and maintained itas the Matsudairas’ family temple.The graves of 26 successive feudallords can be found here.

This is the first temple that Basho visited on the way to IseShrine after completing his trip to Okunohosomichi.

This temple is believed to havebeen built by Prince Shotoku andhouses designated nationalimportant cultural assets, including“Shaka Hasso Jodo-Zu” (a paintingof Shakamuni’s eight-phaseattainment of the path).

芭蕉が奥の細道の旅を終えて、伊勢神宮参拝の旅についた時、最初に立ち寄ったのが大智院です。市指定文化財の挨拶句「うき我を　さひしからせよ　秋の寺」をしたためた直筆の色紙が残されています。

多度山を神体山とする神社で、創建は５世紀後半といわれます。古来より馬の行動を神意の現われとすることから、その年の豊作、凶作を占う「上げ馬神事」が行われています。

観光協会駐車場約50台（平日無料）、その他周辺に有料駐車場あり（約1500台）

Dedicated to the divine Mt. Tado andbelieved to be established in the late fifthcentury, the Tadotaisha Shrine shrinefeatures the annual Ageuma Shinto ritualthat predicts the year’s harvest.

聖徳太子創建と伝えられるお寺。桑名聖天大祭や、伊勢大神楽の奉納が行われます。「釈迦八相成道図」などの国指定重要文化財を収蔵しています。

徳川四天王の一人。幼少より徳川家康に仕えて多くの戦功を立て、関ケ原の戦功により桑名十万石に転封。五十数度出陣して、一度も戦傷を負わなかったと伝えられています。

三方ヶ原の戦いで武田軍に敗れた徳川軍は、浜松城へと敗走。一言坂で武田軍をくい止めるために忠勝が大槍を振り回して奮戦し、見事、家康を逃れさせたと伝えられています。敵の武田軍はこの武勇をたたえた札を立てたといわれています。

Defeated by the Takeda troops inMikatagahara, the Tokugawa troops fledto Hamamatsu Castle. Tadakatsu Hondafought hard at Hitokotozaka to hold backthe enemy so Ieyasu could flee. TheTakeda troops admired Tadakatsu’s valorand said, “There are two things thatIeyasu does not deserve, his Chinesehelmet and Heihachi (Tadakatsu)Honda.”

海に向かって開かれた桑名城は、かつて「扇城（おうぎじょう）」と呼ばれました。海道の名城とたたえられた城の面影を残し、本丸と二之丸跡を利用した九華公園となり、桜やつつじ、花菖蒲が植えられ、市民の憩いの場として親しまれています。また、三之丸跡に造られた吉之丸コミュニティパークの芝生広場入口には、本多忠勝の銅像が建てられています。

Kuwana Castle faces the sea and used to be calledOogi Castle (a fan castle). Kyuka Park still retainstraces of the castle and is now an oasis for Kuwanacitizens. There is a bronze statue of Tadakatsu Hondain Yoshinomaru Community Park built on the ruins ofSannomaru (the third fortress of the castle).

a> 海中から現れた地蔵尊を安置したことから始まり、江戸時代以前は

田町の西にあったといわれます。慶長の町割で現在地に移り、桑名藩主本多家の菩提寺であり、本多忠勝本廟となりました。

The temple was relocated to the current location due to the landreadjustment implemented in the Keicho era. It is a family temple of theHondas, Kuwana’s feudal lord, and the mausoleum of Tadakatsu Honda.

Tadakatsu Honda was one of the big four among theretainers of the Tokugawas. Serving IeyasuTokugawa, he rendered remarkable services in manybattles and was awarded Kuwana and a stipend of ahundred thousand koku of rice, for his greatcontribution in the Battle of Sekigahara. It is believedthat he was never injured in more than 50 battles.

九華公園周辺地図

本多忠勝は、桑名城を

海に向かって開いた城に修築し、

町に流れ込む川の流れを変え、

城下町・宿場町・港町という３つの顔を持つ

壮大なまちづくりを進めました。

現在の桑名市街の形は、この時に築かれたものです。

The approximately 500-meter original stone walls still existand are designated a cultural asset by the city.

揖斐川に面した川口樋門から南大手橋に至る全長約500ｍにわたり、創建当時の石垣が現存しています。市の文化財に指定されています。積石の状態は、野面はぎ、打込はぎの２つの技法による乱積です。

This is a symbol of Kuwana and is faithfully restored to its original statejust like the one that the travelers on the Tokaido road used to see. Thetower is believed to have been constructed for sea surveillance.

七里の渡に面して建てられた蟠龍櫓。かつては東海道を行き交う旅人たちが目にした、桑名のシンボルを忠実に復元しました。航海の監視として据えられたと考えられています。



Restoration of picture maps created during the Shoho era (1644-1648)These picture maps were created when the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, orderedfeudal lords across the country to submit surveyed picture maps of their castle in hisattempt to demonstrate his power.

正保年間（1644～1648）に作成された絵図の復元これは、三代将軍家光が威光を示すために、全国の大名に実測を書き入れた城の絵図を提出させた時のもの。長い間江戸城に秘蔵され、国立公文書館内閣文庫に移管された貴重な史料です。現存する桑名城の絵図としては最古のものです。

桑名ゆかり人に逢いに行く

歴史に名をとどめた先人たちの足跡を訪ね、それぞれの時代背景を頭に描いてみる。先人たちの様々な想いが伝わってくるかもしれません。

八代将軍徳川吉宗の孫で、老中首座として「寛政の改革」を断行したことで知られています。号を“楽翁（らくおう）”と称して、朱子学に通じた多くの著書があり、書画なども多く桑名に伝えられています。

Sadanobu Matsudaira is known as the grandson ofthe eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune, and forinitiating the Kansei Reform as a chief councilor.Adopting the pseudonym of Rakuo, he left behind agreat number of books, paintings, and calligraphy.

十八代桑名藩主。鳥羽・伏見の戦いでは、幕府軍の主力部隊として参戦し敗退。将軍・徳川慶喜とともに江戸に戻り、北越から最後は箱館（現函館市）まで転戦し、倒幕軍に降伏。のちには日光東照宮の宮司になりました。

After the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, the 18th feudal lord of theKuwana clan returned to Edo with Shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa.Later, he moved from Hokuetsu to Hakodate, fighting battles untilthe anti-Shogunate army won a major victory over the Shogunatearmy. He later became the chief priest of Nikko Toshogu.

戊辰殉難招魂碑Monument of Boshin Junan Shokon

幕末から明治にかけての鳥羽・伏見の戦いで亡くなった桑名藩士を弔う青銅製剣型の碑で、天守閣跡に建っています。最後の桑名藩主であった松平定敬の銘文が刻まれています。明治20年（1887）に建立されました。

鎮国守国神社Chinkoku Shukoku Shrine

文政６年（1823）白河から桑名への移封に伴い桑名城本丸に移りました。松平定綱（鎮国公）、定信（守国公＝楽翁）を祀り、明治維新後しばらくは本丸の外に移っていましたが、明治40年（1907）本丸跡の現在地に移りました。

【桑名の人】

定信は、朱子学に通じ『花月草紙』『宇下人言』『修身録』などの多くの著書を残し、「集古十種」の編纂事業でもよく知られています。桑名市博物館には定信直筆の一行書、和歌短歌などが数多く所蔵されています。定信の子、定永が白河から桑名に移封したのに伴い、伝えられました。

Sadanobu was well versed in Neo-Confucianism and wrote manybooks on the subject. He is alsowell known for the compilation ofShukojisshu. Kuwana City Museumhas a large collection of one-linecalligraphy and waka (tanka) inSadanobu’s own hand.


This is a monument dedicated to the souls of Kuwanasoldiers. Erected in 1887, it bears an inscription by SadaakiMatsudaira.

Along with the relocation of the fief from Shirakawa to Kuwana in 1823, theChinkoku Shukoku Shrine was also moved to the inner citadel of the castle. Theshrine enshrines the souls of Sadatsuna (a tutelary deity) and Sadanobu (aguardian deity).

有料駐車場あり（8ページ本多忠勝の銅像に記載）楽翁公百年祭記念宝物館は5月2・3日のみ有料で開館します。

増山正まさ

賢かた

（雪斎せっさい

）Masakata Masuyama (Sessai)

江戸時代後期の伊勢長島藩主。書画に秀でた“文人大名”として知られますが、とりわけ画家として非凡な才能を発揮し、優れた花鳥画や山水画を多数残した藩主でした。

A feudal lord of the Ise Nagashima clan in the lateEdo period, he is well known as a literary daimyo forhis excellence in paintings and calligraphy.

千姫Princess Sen

徳川二代将軍・秀忠の娘で、家康の孫娘にあたります。二代桑名藩主・本多忠政の子、忠刻と運命的な出会いを経て結ばれ、桑名城で短くも幸せだった新婚生活を送りました。

Princess Sen is the daughter of the second Tokugawashogun, Hidetada, and a granddaughter of Ieyasu. Shemarried Tadatoki Honda, the son of the secondKuwana feudal lord, Tadamasa Honda, and stayed ashort time as a newlywed at Kuwana Castle.

一般に千羽鶴は、一羽の鶴を千羽折ってつないだものですが、桑名の千羽鶴は、一枚の紙から複数のつながった鶴を作る折り方です。江戸時代に長円寺の住職・魯縞庵義道（ろこうあんぎどう）によって考案されたもので、立体的な美しい作品が多く作られています。折り方が市の文化財に指定されています。

Kuwana’s one thousand paper cranes are unique in that they are made from one pieceof paper. In the Edo period, Rokoan Gido, the chief priest of Choenji Temple, inventedthe method. This folding method is designated a cultural asset by the city.

輪中の郷に所蔵されている増山正賢（雪斎は号）の作品で最も多いのは、花鳥画です。細密描写と濃彩によって、心癒される清澄な空気に満ちあふれ、節度ある色感やきまじめな筆致に、雪斎の個性がうかがえます。

Most of Masakata Masuyama’s(pseudonym Sessai) paintings ownedby Waju-no-Sato are paintings of birdsand flowers. Sessai’s personality isembodied in the detailed description,dark coloring, moderate color sense,and serious touch of these paintings.

Upon inviting and enshrining thedivided spirit of the deity of Toshoguto this shrine, Princess Sen, whomarried into the Honda Family inKuwana, dedicated a statue of hergrandfather Ieyasu to the shrine.

In commemoration of the centennial anniversary of Basho Matsuo’s visit to Daichiin Temple, Sessai built a monument of Sho-o Shinshukusyo inscribed in his ownhandwriting in front of Daichiin Temple. It is designated a cultural asset by the city.

「ライトアップされた橋（トゥインクル）」

木曽川、揖斐川をまたぐ橋は、不夜城のように灯りを放ち、往来する車の安全を見守ります。「風をうけて進む七里の渡舟」をイメージしてデザインされたこの橋は、地域の歴史と文化を象徴するランドマークとして親しまれています。

揖斐川中州から数千発のスターマイン、水中花火、ナイアガラ、二尺玉花火などが打ち上げられます。すさまじい光と音が夜空と水面を彩る一大スペクタルにどよめきが響く、水郷のまちならではの花火大会です。

Several thousand fireworks are set off from the sandbar ofthe Ibi River, including Starmine, water-born, NiagaraFalls, and two-shaku ball fireworks.

春は新緑、初夏にはゲンジボタル、盛夏は天然プールの水遊び、秋は紅葉とめぐりくる季節を満喫できます。また、渓谷にあるみそぎ滝が涼感を、天然記念物「イヌナシ」が白い花の可憐さを、季節の便りとして届けてくれます。

Here, people enjoy the changing of the seasonsthe fresh verdure of spring, fireflies in earlysummer, playing in a natural pool in high summer,and scarlet-tinged leaves in autumn. The ravinealso provides Inunashi, a natural treasure.

「みそぎ滝」Misogi Falls

多度峡の清流の静けさは、みそぎ滝で一転。清流は高さ25メートの瀑布となり、すさまじい音を響かせて落下します。その姿は白絹をまとったような清々しさがあり、多度大社のみそぎ場です。春の新緑、夏の天然プール、秋の紅葉と、市民の憩いの場になっています。

「九華公園さくらまつり」Kyuka Park Cherry Blossom Festival

桑名城跡の九華公園では、約450本のソメイヨシノなどが春爛漫と咲き誇ります。堀にかかる橋をわたりながら、優雅に桜見物ができます。雪洞などでライトアップされた、夜桜見物は風情たっぷり。茶会、写生大会、地酒試飲会など、多彩な楽しい催しが行われます。

人馬一体の勇壮さに息を飲む

【祭り】

上げ馬神事に先立って「神児行列」と、それを迎える「七度半の使い」の儀式が行われる。顔におしろいと紅を塗り、白装束をまとった少年のところへお迎えが出向く。

少年は１カ月間身を清める。その間、騎馬の練習に明け暮れ、本番の上げ馬神事に挑む。武者姿の少年が登場し、緊張に包まれる瞬間。

神児にさしかけられていた朱色の傘が閉じられるのを合図に、最初の馬が勢いよく馬場を駆け出す。馬が上がる姿を一目見ようと、的の近くには鈴なりの観客が詰めかけ、馬が上がりきると歓声が鳴り響く。

日本一やかましい祭り

武者姿も凛々しい少年たちが、絶壁を人馬一体となって駆け上がる勇壮な神事。上がった馬の数でその年の豊凶が占われます。駆け上がった瞬間、見守る人々からどっと歓声が上がります。この祭りの起源は南北朝のころにさかのぼり、武家や豪族たちが古式にならい、端午の節句に絶壁を騎馬で上がるという上げ馬を奉納したことが始まりといわれています。

This is a heroic ageuma rite where youngboys in the costume of armored samuraidash up a steep slope on horseback. Theyear’s harvest is predicted by the numberof horses that make it to the top of theslope. This festival dates back to the Periodof the North and South Dynasties, whensamurai and powerful clans dedicated theageuma ritual, dashing up a slope onhorseback, to Tadotaisha Shrine on May5th(Boys’ Day).

神前神楽太鼓を合図に、30数台の祭車が打ち鳴らす鉦（かね）や太鼓の勇壮無比な音色は圧巻。夕刻からは春日神社への渡祭（とさい）が始まり、祭車が練りまわる姿は、興奮と轟音（ごうおん）が入り混じって夏の暑熱を吹き飛ばします。氏子たちが、町屋川から石を小さな車に載せて鉦や太鼓を鳴らして運び、神前へ奉納したのが始まりといわれています。

At the sound of kagura (sacred music) drums beginperforming front of the gods, the sounds of bells ringingand drums beating can be heard from more than 30 floats.This heroic sound highlights the festival. The festival isbelieved to originate from the dedication of stones thatlocal worshipers picked from the Machiya River andcarried on a wagon to the shrine while ringing bells andbeating drums.

A variety of goldfish-shaped portable shrines representing each district carried bychildren in hapi coats march through the town to a shrine. The festival originatesfrom the practice of goldfish dealers who used to carry goldfish fromYamatokoriyama to Edo presenting some of them to Sadanobu Matsudaira, wholoved goldfish, on their way to Edo.

金魚の露店をはじめ多くの店が鎮国守国神社境内に並び、夜まで賑わいます。各町からいろいろな形の金魚の御神輿が出され、はっぴ姿の子どもたちに担がれて練り込み参拝をします。祭神の一柱である松平定信が金魚を好んだことにちなむもので、江戸時代からすでに金魚の一大生産地だった大和郡山の業者が、江戸に運ぶ途中の金魚を桑名藩主に献上したことがきっかけだったといわれています。それ以降、桑名近郊でも金魚の養殖が盛んになり、金魚売りの姿が夏の風物詩になるまでに発展しました。

【伝統行事】

長い歴史を誇る伊勢大神楽は、江戸時代から伊勢神宮に参拝できない人のために各地をめぐり神楽を奉納したという神事です。毎年12月24日には桑名にもどり、増田神社境内で全演目が奉納され、大勢の見物客で賑わいます。圧巻の獅子舞に加え、皿回しや手まり、軽業といった曲芸などが披露されます。市内の伊勢大神楽講社の人々によって受け継がれており、毎年正月を迎えると、滋賀県を中心に全国各地を回り、伊勢神宮のお札を配ります。

Isedaikagura (sacred music dedicated to the deity of a shrine) with a long history since the Edo period is a Shinto ritualthat tours the country to dedicate kagura to the Ise Shrine for those who are unable to travel to Ise. It returns to Kuwanaon December 24 of each year and dedicates the entire program of the kagura performance to Masuda Shrine, wheremany visitors come to see the performance.

This is a festival for Kangiten, an image ofwhich was donated by SadanobuMatsudaira. At the festival, a hiwatari ritual,where people light a holy fire for invocationand walk on it praying for year-round goodhealth, and Ise Grand Kagura areperformed.

松平定信が信仰した聖天を祀った大福田寺で、毎年4月に行われ、百数十年の歴史があります。江戸時代に寛政の改革を行った松平定信が寄進したという歓喜天の祭礼で、「稚児行列」や山伏姿の信者が一年の無病息災を祈り、護摩（ごま）を炊いてその上を歩く「火渡神事」、「伊勢大神楽」などが催され、多くの参詣者で賑わいます。

The festival originated from thepractice of archers shooting at targetson horseback after racing horses onthe palace grounds. This practicelater became an event amongsamurai families. Yabusame requiresspecial skills where archers shootthree targets along a path while onhorseback.

天下太平国家安泰の祈りを込めて行われてきた祭事ですが、もとは、宮中の馬場殿で競馬の出番が終わった射手が狩衣、綾闇笠などをつけたまま的を射たのが始まりで、転じて武家の行事となりました。的は方板を竹串にはさんだものが３カ所に立てられ、馬上の射手が射抜くという妙技です。「やぶさめ、はじめませ」の言葉を合図に一の射手が駆け出します。弓をきりりと引き絞り、勢いよく放たれた矢が的を射ると、拍手が響きます。

During the festival, the entire premises of Tadotaisha Shrine arecovered with an enormous number of lanterns and the variety ofevents include a handmade pottery class and a flea market. Thelantern lights color the summer night, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

多度大社全体が膨大な提灯に覆われ、境内では手作り陶芸教室、よりどり萬市など様々な催し物が行われます。提灯点燈式が終わると、提灯の無数の明かりがやさしい光を放ち、夏の夜を幻想的に彩ります。

和太鼓

Japanese Drum

桑名では300年の昔から、和太鼓作りが盛んでした。欅（けやき）の原木をくりぬき、丹念に削って形を整えた美しい木目の胴。ピンと張り詰めた両面の皮張り。長い年月と精魂込められた職人の技の極致から、人々の心をときめかす和太鼓の迫力ある響きが生まれます。

【匠の技】

桑名の豪商・沼波弄山（1718～1777）によって作られた萬古焼。華麗な色絵を主体とした優美な作品を生み出し、いつまでも変わらないという願いが込められた「萬古不易（ばんこふえき）」の精神は、今も桑名の物作りに脈々と受け継がれています。

Banko ware was invented by Rozan Nunami, a wealthy merchant in Kuwana. The spirit ofBankofueki (lasting forever without any change) has been handed down to modern artisansin Kuwana.

Kuwana has actively produced Japanese drums for 300 years. The powerful, enchantingbeat of Japanese drums comes from artisans’ skills that have reached the pinnacle ofdevelopment through many years of commitment.

Kuwana trays made ofnatural wood over 300 yearsold are created afterrepeated lacquering. Duringand after the Edo period,Kuwana trays establishedthe current style of a roundtray on which a turnip isdrawn.

樹齢300年以上の天然木を使い、何度も漆を塗り重ねて作る桑名盆。江戸時代以降に、丸盆にかぶらの絵が描かれるようになりました。絵はすべて手書きで、勢いよく一気に描かれます。洒脱な雰囲気の中に職人の手技が光ります。

日本有数の鋳物の生産地として知られる桑名。本多忠勝が桑名城の築城にあたり、造らせたのが起源とされ、早くから梵鐘作りも行われてきました。鐘の音色のよしあしは、その材料である錫（すず）の混ぜ具合で決まるという、匠の技が光る逸品です。桑名市で作られた梵鐘は、広く全国各地へと届けられています。

Casting is believed to originate from the casting products that Tadakatsu Honda orderedwhen he built Kuwana Castle. Production of cast temple bells started soon after. Casterssay that the sound quality of a temple bell is determined by the amount of tin blended intothe raw materials. Temple bells are the crystallization of the excellence of skilled workmen.

Originating from its name and action, a flicking monkey is believed to flick offmisfortune and bring luck. It has been cherished by people as a good-luck charmthat flicks off evil or bad luck.

はじき猿は明治中期より多度大社のお土産として売られ、その名前と動きから「災難をはじき去る（猿）、運をはね上げる」とされ、悪または厄をはじき去るという掛け詞から縁起玩具として親しまれています。

「東海の台所」にふさわしい、食文化を築いてきました。

今も伝統を守り、こだわりを求める、食への想い、

情熱が息づいています。

ねぎ、焼き豆腐、しらたきをそえて、あくまでも「肉が主役」の昔ながらの桑名自慢の味。炭火で熱した鉄鍋でさっと焼き、割り下を加えていただきます。霜降りがきめ細かく入った肉の味わいは絶品。牛鍋と呼ばれたすきやきも、明治４年（1871）にはすでに登場していました。

Beef is quickly fried in a hot iron pan over acharcoal fire, to which a special sauce isadded. This is how Kuwana’s sukiyaki iscooked. The juicy taste of fat-marbled beefis a delicacy that suits all palates. Sukiyaki,once called beef pot, appeared in 1871.

川魚料理Freshwater Fish Dishes

フナやモロコなど、豊富な川魚を使った料理があります。とくにコイ料理は、たんぱく質やビタミンが豊富で、滋養強壮に効果があるといわれています。鯉のアライ、鯉コク、コイダンゴ、塩焼きなど、すべてが伝統の味を感じさせてくれます。

A variety of freshwater fish are available,including crucian carp and willow gudgeondishes. In particular, carp are believed to berich in protein and vitamins and provide highnourishment.

Handmade udon noodles, which are created inthe cold climate of Kuwana, are literally spreadand cut by hand. High quality flour and proficientskills create noodles pleasing to the palate andcrowned with a translucent color and glossyluster.

桑名の風土が生んだ寒作りの手延べうどんは、文字通りの手作り、手でのばす麺。良質の粉と熟練の技は、煮くずれしない、まろやかな舌ざわり、透きとおるほどの色、艶は逸品です。夏場はそうめんやひやむぎもおすすめ。

安永餅Yasunaga Mochi

江戸時代以来、諸大名の参勤交代や、お伊勢参りの旅人などに親しまれてきました。つぶあんが入って細長くのばした餅を、丹念に焼き上げています。ほのかな焦げ目の香ばしさが上品な味わい。当時は「ともち」などと称されていました。

大豆を軸にきな粉を練り合わせ、白砂糖で包みこんだ素朴な豆菓子です。一口サイズで食べやすく、口に含んだ時に素朴で何ともいえない懐かしさを覚えるとともに、ほっこりとした甘さがくせになります。

古くから桑名で親しまれている厚焼き煎餅。もち米とうるち米の生地を、丹精込めて一枚一枚炭火にて焼き上げた溜り煎餅です。旨味と香りを兼ね備えたたまり醤油で味付けされています。「たがね」の伝統の味も、この醤油がなくては、独特の風味をかもし出すことができません。

酒・ビールSake & Beer

木曽三川の河口に位置する桑名は、古来より日本屈指の米の交易港でもありました。その米の旨みを最大限に引き出しました。豊かな自然に育まれた良質な米から生み出される桑名の地酒。豊富な食材にふさわしい名酒ぞろいです。

Kuwana, located at the mouth of Kiso Sansen, has beenone of the leading rice trading ports since ancient times.Tapping into and drawing out the best of rice, Kuwana hasproduced sake of superior quality.

In the early Showa period, the morning market developed asthe shopping street in front of Kuwana Betsuin targetingvisitors to the temple. The market was held only on dayswith a number three or eight and as many as 80 stalls wereopen.

南北200ｍに延びる寺町通り商店街は、昭和の初め、桑名別院を中心に参拝客相手の門前商店街として発展した名物朝市です。３と８のつく日にだけ開催される日切り市には、魚介類や野菜などを並べた80軒もの露店が軒を競い、賑わいを見せています。

「その手は桑名の焼き蛤」の掛詞で知られる桑名の蛤（はまぐり）は、江戸時代からの名物。色・艶がよく、ほのかな甘みと独特の風味が広がるその美味しさから「浜の栗」と称されました。今でも多くの店で蛤料理を味わうことができます。また、「桑名の殿さん時雨で茶々漬け」の俗謡で有名なしぐれ蛤も広く親しまれています。

Known for the pun “Sonote wa kuwana no yaki hamaguri(I won’t fall for that trick),” clams have been Kuwana’slocal specialty since the Edo period. They are called“chestnuts of the sea” due to their slightly sweet, uniqueflavor. Even now, many restaurants serve clam dishes inKuwana.

蛤Clam

A simple bean snack made of mainly soy beans and soybean flour kneaded together and covered with sugar. Thebite-size, easy-to-eat snack has a tender, sweet taste, whichis quite addictive.

These are tamari soy sauce-flavored rice crackers made ofglutinous and non-glutinous rice dough and grilled carefullypiece by piece. They are flavored with tamari soy sauce,which produces a savory smell and adds good taste whengrilled.

During the Edo period, many feudal lords traveling betweenEdo and their own homes and pilgrims to Ise Shrine enjoyedyasunaga mochi (rice cakes) during the course of their trip.Long-shaped Yasunaga Mochi contain bean jam and arecarefully grilled.

【観光レンタサイクル】Bicycle Rental

桑名駅前の桑名市物産観光案内所と六華苑の２カ所で貸出をしています。無料ですが、貸出保証料として100円お預かりします。使った後は借りた場所に返却してください。受付時間午前９時～午後３時。Bicycles can be rented at two locations: Kuwana City Tourist Information Center in frontof Kuwana Station and Rokka-en. Although the rental service is offered free of charge,users are asked to deposit ￥100 as security. Service hours: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
