Introduction

Trust and Obey was written in 1887 by John H. Sammis along with Daniel B. Towner. Sammis was born in 1846 in Brooklyn, NY and died in 1919 in Los Angeles, CA. He was a business man who left the profession to become a minister and hymn writer. He wrote over 100 hymns which you can find in the paperback compilation “Trust and Obey and other songs.”

According to several sources, the hymn came about during a revival meeting of Dwight L. Moody’s in 1887. A young man who had just given his life to Christ stood up and said several things showing his lack of biblical understanding. However, he ended with the words “I am not quite sure. I am going to trust and obey.”

Daniel B. Towner, the music director for the Moody Bible Institute, was present at the meeting. He was so struck by the young man’s words that he jotted them down. With the help of Sammis, who wrote the lyrics, he soon composed the music to the hymn we now know as “Trust and Obey” (or “When We Walk With the Lord”).

Learn the Hymn Trust and Obey

• Listen to the Hymn: There are many sources for listening to the hymn. Here is a simple one from hymnal.net. You can also look up more modern versions on YouTube.

• Song Sheet: Use the song sheet in this document as a visual for teaching the song. Post it where the kids will see it often. The image is the same one used on the Coloring Sheet.

• Sing the Hymn Together: Learn the hymn together. You can do this by listening to a recording throughout the day. Sing it together using the song sheet and sing it during the bed time routine. It’s also great addition to family worship or as a calm-down song when things are getting crazy.

• Sign Language: Consider using hand motions or sign language for the song. It’s fun and helps aid memorization. You can make up hand motions yourself or use signs like the one in this YouTube video.

• Use A Heart of Obedience family Bible study: We used this hymn study as a part of our own family’s extensive study on obedience. If you’d like a more in-depth obedience study with parenting tips and teaching activities, check out A Heart of Obedience in the store at ProverbialHomemaker.com

Hymn Study/Devotion

It isn’t certain whether there is a specific scripture this hymn is based on. However, we would all do well to be more familiar with these verses on trust and obedience.

1) Trust and obey, for there's no other way

Trust and obey, for there's no other way To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Scripture: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you! ~ Psalm 84:12

Discussion: Read the introduction to this study. Just like the young man who had just given his life to Christ, we don’t know everything there is to know about God and following Him, and we never will! Whether we’re new to faith in Jesus or have lived most all our lives saved by His grace, we can KNOW for sure that true contentment and happiness comes when we fully trust and obey Him.

2) Walk with the Lord in the light of His Word

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.

Scripture: I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. ~ Psalm 119:11

Discussion: What does it mean to walk with the Lord in the light of His Word? How does knowing God’s Word help us know Him more? How does it help us obey Him more?

When we know God’s Word we know more about who He is - His character. We know that He is good, trustworthy, and loving. We know what He asks of us - His commands. A loving and trustworthy God is one we want to obey more, right? Because He always wants what’s best for us and loves us so much.

3) Not a doubt or a fear… can abide

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, But His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, But is blessed if we trust and obey.

Scripture: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

Discussion: What fears, troubles, or sorrow have you experienced lately? How can trusting God overcome those difficult situations? How can obeying Him help?

When we know that a loving and all-powerful God is in control no matter what happens, it is easier to trust Him when things don’t go the way we want. We can give Him our sorrows, our fears, and our concerns, knowing He will take care of us.

4) The delights of His love

But we never can prove the delights of His love Until all on the altar we lay; For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows, Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet. Or we'll walk by His side in the way. What He says we will do, where He sends we will go; Never fear, only trust and obey.

Scripture: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ~ Matthew 22:37

Discussion: Do you tend to not trust God with the big things? Or the things that seem impossible? Do you sometimes only obey Him in a half-hearted way? Will God truly bless those who only trust and obey Him a little?

It can be easy to assume that God can’t or won’t take care of our needs sometimes. Unfortunately, it can also be easy to only obey Him part of the way. But when we put our whole trust in Him, and obey Him wholeheartedly, we are putting it all “on the altar,” and will experience the blessings of true obedience.
