Key Messages to Keep in Mind – The Devil is in the Detail !
Vendor marketing materials and presentations sound great– Such material is high level by definition– It is designed to highlight a product's strengths– Claims of advanced design, high availability, superior performance, low cost, are common
BUT
Potentially significant system differences despite similar names: – Virtualization – Clustering – Tiering – Storage Pooling – Copy Services– Consistency Groups
Some system differences will be visible to customers
Customers need to understand “delivered” capability
There is no Industry Standard for Feature and Function Names

P4000 Storage Nodes are HP Servers
P4000 uses HP Servers as Storage Nodes – Two basic HP Server choices – P4300 or P4500– Nothing is modified on HP Servers
• Redundant fans • Redundant power supplies • Redundant NICs cards• Hardware RAID for disks
– Dual RAID controller w/battery-backed 1GB cache
P4000 Offering Packaging– One P4300 or P4500 package = Two Nodes – Hence P4300 has 2 x 8 disk drives = 16 disks
• Scales from 16 to 256 drives– Hence P4500 has 2 x 12 disk drives = 24 disks
• Scales from 24 to 384 drives – Optional one node P4300 or P4500 expansion– Refreshes occur with new server releases
P4000 uses latest HP ProLiant Technology

Why does HP P4000 Become so Expensive!!
One HP P4000 Node is a single HP Server
This is NOT a dual storage controller !!!
This single node
is a SPOF
HW RAID 10, 5, 6
HW RAID 10, 5, 6
HW RAID 10, 5, 6
HW RAID 10, 5, 6
Duplicate Your Data across nodesNETWORK
RAID
P4000 relies on redundant hardware resources to provide data protection
Ex: P4300 8-drives per node
HW RAID 10, 5, 6
Two HP P4000 Nodes are two HP Servers
This is NOT a dual storage controller !!!
This is 2 nodes
each a SPOF
Two HP P4000 Node are two HP Servers with SAN/iQ
software
This is NOT a dual storage controller !!!
Network RAID software is used to create another copy
of data (2x space)
This is 2 nodes with high availability

High Cost of Data Protection – Must use two RAID Levels!
Internal Hardware RAID only protects HDD failures
To provide High Availability customer MUST mirror (Network RAID) multiple copies of data across a cluster of storage nodes
ASSOCIATED Network RAID overhead also reduces usable bandwidth
Spares required in each node
Hardware RAID for disks can be selected during initial setup of a node and cannot be changed once the node is added to a cluster
HENCE increasing costs and lowering usable capacity dramatically
Available Internal Hardware RAID levels
• RAID 5
− 8 Disk model: 7+1 − 12 Disk model: 2 sets 5+1
• RAID 6
− 8 Disk model: 6+2 − 12 Disk model: 2 sets 4+2
• RAID 10
− 8 Disk model: 4 drives striped and mirrored to 4 drives
− 12 Disk model: 6 drives striped and mirrored to 6 drives
Mirror data with Network RAID
Across nodes

HP P4000’s Network RAID Definition
How Network RAID works:
– Creates redundant copies of data blocks
– That resides on different storage nodes
– Can specify up to four (4) copies of data
– Recommended/default –2-way network RAID
Sell 2x copies of data as Disaster Recovery Solution

Overcoming A SPOF But At A Price
P4000 touts mirroring as a strength… because they must
– P4000 doesn’t provide disk access between servers
– P4000 doesn’t provide internal info between servers
– A minimum of 2 systems are required for redundancy
– Volumes (LUNs) are only seen by local Storage Node
Data availability beyond hardware RAID … because they must
– Network RAID = redundant copies of data (2x) i.e. mirroring
– Option to do 1, 2, 3 or 4 redundant copies
Requires approx 2X the disks of competing systems to try to equal their performance & availability

Beware Of Campus-wide SAN Argument
P4000 encourages customers to divide their storage between buildings
They tout BC/DR… because it appears to play to their strength
The problem is; if the comm-link is down, or a building is down, or a controller is having a firmware upgrade, then a single controller failure can corrupt parts of all live volumes
If a building can’t communicate with the outside world then storage must shut down and local apps crash

Campus SAN Costs Can Soar Best practices require doubling the hardware for performance to avoid local reads
over the WAN
P4000 encourages 4-way replication - This way if the connections between buildings go down there is no single point of failure
This makes a P4000 solution tremendously expensive

Network RAID 5
Delivers approximately 60% utilization of raw disk capacity
Requires at least 4 nodes in a cluster
Recommended for use with mostly read, sequential applications such as file shares and archives
Network RAID 6 Delivers approximately 55% utilization of raw disk capacity
Requires at least 6 nodes in a cluster
Recommended for use with mostly read, sequential applications such as file shares and archives on larger P4000 clusters
HP BEST Practices: HP STILL RECOMMENDS NETWORK RAID 10!!
Network RAID 10 is the default protection level as it has the best balance of performance and protection and it is recommended for use with any applications
Only Network RAID 10, 10+1, and 10+2 provide protection from site failures in a multi-site SAN configuration

HP P4000 Take-Always
Use latest Industry Standard Components – server hardwareUse latest Industry Standard Components – server hardware– Low-cost entry point– Virtualization & Storage Pooling– Thin Provisioning & Snapshot– Disaster Recovery is included– All-inclusive bundled software
Network RAID is positioned as a selling advantage, is greatly flawed
Requires approximately 2X the assets of competing storage in order to even try to equal performance and availability
If TCO is important, & remote mirroring isn’t required, then P4000 is not for you
P4000 requires more; drives, labor, and expertise to meet business needs
