Overthepastfourseasonsatotalof12NCAAtrophieshavebeenhoistedbyBig12institutions,withatleastonenationalcrownwoninallbutoneyear for theconference, includingeachof thepast11seasons.

While these numbers are impressive, Big 12 andformerBigEightmembersmanagedevenfewerwins.That’s becauseNebraskadoesn’t lose to conferenceopponentsintheColiseum.

Onlythreetimesin32yearsofregular-seasonBigEight/Big12playhasaconferenceopponenteverwonon theColiseumfloor. In fact,during that time,onlythree conference opponents have managed to winin Lincoln. Nebraska suffered its first-ever regular-season loss to a conference foe in 1999, falling toKansas State to snap a streak of 101 consecutivewins against regular-season conference opponents.UnderJohnCook,theHuskershavedroppedonlytwoBig12homematchesat theColiseumover the lasteightyearsandnonesince2004.

CookandPettitsaidthehome-courtadvantageismostvaluableduringitslong,hard-foughtbattles.

“YoufeelincrediblyconfidentwhenyougetintoafifthgameintheColiseumbecauseoftheelectricityintightmatches,”Cooksaid.

“The home crowd was a big advantage when wewere fatigued or drained in themiddle of a four- orfive-game match,” Pettit said. “The players usedtheenergyandelectricityfromthefanstopullthemthroughdifficultstretches.Idon’tthinkthatit’sasbiganadvantageagainsttheeliteteams,butitdefinitelymakesadifference.”

NebraskahasusedthatsuccessathometopropelitthroughtheNCAATournament.

The Huskers have hosted an NCAA Tournamentmatcheveryseasonsince1984andhavecapitalizedoneachopportunitybycompilinga45-3playoffrecordin the stoic building. And Nebraska fans have beenrewarded by seeing eight of the Huskers’ 10 NCAAregionalchampionshipswonontheirhomecourt.

Nebraskacarrieda65-matchColiseumwinstreakinto the 1999 season, but suffered a loss to No. 6PacificintheStateFarm/NACWAAClassicsemifinal.In2002,theHuskerscarrieda63-matchhomewinningstreakintoitsNCAAregionalfinalmatchagainstHawaii,butfell,3-1.Nebraskabeginsthe2008seasonwitha64-match

Oneof the foundations forNebraska’sathleticsuccess is itsoutstanding facilities,andfewhomecourtsinthecountryareastradition-richastheNebraskaColiseum,thehomeoftheHuskervolleyballprogram.Overtheyears,the4,030-seatNUColiseumhasprovidedtheNebraskavolleyballprogramwithanunmatchedhome-courtadvantage.

“WinstonChurchillsaid‘inthebeginning,webuildbuildings.Intheend,weareshapedby the buildings we live in.’ I think the Coliseum shapes Nebraska volleyball,” FormerNebraskavolleyballcoachTerryPettitsaid.“It’sanenvironmentthatcreatesintimacy.It’saclassicstructureandinalotofwaysreflectswhattheNebraskaprogramisallabout.”

TheColiseum,whichsitsnestledontheUniversitycampus,isabeautifuldisplayofarchitecturehighlightedbyitspowerfulRomancolumnsgracingthefrontsteps.Butwhileit’s beauty is appreciated by Husker players, coaches and fans, it is one of the mostdreadedplacesforopponentstoplayinthesportofvolleyball,andarguablyoneofthetoughestplacestoplayincollegeathletics.

“Ifthevolleyballgodswantedtobuildavolleyballcourt,theColiseumwouldbeit,”NUcoachJohnCooksaid.“It’saveryintimatesetting.Everyonefeelspartoftheevent.”

DuringtheTerryPettit/JohnCookera,theHuskershavequalifiedfor26consecutiveNCAATournaments,andtheColiseumcrowdhaswilledtheHuskerstomanyvictoriesinthehistoricbuilding.CookcreditedtheNUColiseumcrowdwithwillingtheHuskerstoacome-from-behind,3-2winoverSouthCarolinainthe2000NCAAsecondroundthatkepttheHuskers’nationalchampionshipseasonalive.

NebraskavolleyballhashadunmatchedsuccessintheconfinesofthecozyColiseum,posting 15 undefeated seasons and compiling an all-time record of 454-30 (.938)under itsroof.TheHuskersare169-12(.934)since1990 inthebuilding, including10undefeatedseasonsinthatspan.

Nebraska has sold out its last �06 matches at the NU Coliseum dating back to the 200� season - the longest streak in NCAA volleyball history.

The Wall of Honor was unveiled in 2003 to permanently showcase the greatest players in Nebraska volleyball history.

ThewinstreaksareadirectresultofNebraska’sfrenziedcrowdsthatroutinelyjamthebuilding’sbleachers.TheHuskersfinishedsecondnationallyinattendancein2007withaColiseumaverageattendanceof4,128,atotalthatis102percentoftheColiseum'slistedcapacity.Single-matchticketsin2007soldoutinjust45minutes,asfansbeganliningupthedaybeforetogettheirhandsontheprecioustickets.

“Toappreciatetheathleticismandthespeedofthegame,youhavetobedowncloseandtheColiseumprovidesthatintimatesetting,"CooksaidabouttheNUColiseumatmosphere.

Fans have been known to line up as much as four to five hours in advance to seetheirHuskervolleyballteaminaction.Duringthe2007season,fanssetanNCAAregular-seasonattendancemarkof13,396foramatchagainstHawaiiintheBobDevaneySportsCenter.Nebraskahasaveragedmorethan3,000fansfor14ofthepast16seasons.

The Coliseum’s roots go back to the 1920s when it was the home for the Huskerbasketballteam.NU’scagersplayedonitshardwoodfloorsfrom1926to1977,whentheconstructionontheBobDevaneySportsCenterwascompleted.

Sincethen,thevolleyballteamhasbeenitslonetenant.In1991,theHuskershadaone-yearhiatusfromtheColiseumwhilethebuildingwasbeingrenovatedandtailoredforvolleyball.Therenovationprovidedamorecomfortableatmosphereforplayers,coachesandfans.Amongtheadditionswereanewsoundsystem,scoreboard,overheadlightsandanewfloor.Officesforcoachesandadministrators,aswellasaconference/mediaroom,wereconstructedforabetterworkingenvironment.

Overtheyears,thebuildinghasseennumerousadditionstoaddtothecomfortofbothplayersand fans,whilekeeping the traditionof thebuildingand theHuskervolleyballprogram.Overthepastdecade,lockerrooms,trainingareasandcoachesofficeshaveallbeenupgradedtoprovideHuskerstudent-athleteswithsomeofthebestfacilitiesinthecountry.Forfans,HuskerVisionreplayboards,anewscoreboardandnewdisplayshavebeenadded,recognizingthegreatheritageandtraditionoftheprogram.

Additional seating for fans was created in 2005, with the addition of the HuskerCourtsideClub.Thisadded60premiumseatsontheColiseumfloor,givingfansanup-closeviewofalloftheexcitingvolleyballaction,andmakingNebraskaoneofthefirstprogramsinthecountrytoaddpremiumcourtsideseatingforvolleyball.

The Cornhusker LegendBefore 1900, Nebraska football teams were known

by such names as the Old Gold Knights, Antelopes,Rattlesnake Boys and the Bugeaters. In its first twoseasons (1890-91),Nebraskacompetedas theOldGoldKnights,butbeginningin1892,NebraskaadoptedScarletandCreamas itscolorsandaccepted theBugeatersasitsmostpopularnicknameuntil the turnof thecentury.Namedaftertheinsect-devouringbullbatsthathoveredovertheplains,theBugeatersalsofoundtheirpreyintheMidwest,enjoyingwinningcampaignsineveryyearofthe1890suntiladisappointingseasonin1899.

Afteritsfirstlosingseasoninadecade,itmusthaveseemedonlyfittingthatNebraskamoveinanewdirection,and Lincoln sportswriter Charles S. (Cy) Sherman, whowas to gain national renown as the sports editor of theLincoln Star and help to originate the Associated Presspoll,providedthenicknamethathasgainedfameformorethanacentury.ShermantiredofreferringtotheNebraskateamswithsuchanunglamoroustermasBugeaters.Iowahad,fromtimetotime,beencalledtheCornhuskers,andthenameappealedtoSherman. Iowapartisansseemedto prefer Hawkeyes, so Sherman started referring to theNebraskateamasCornhuskers,andthe1900teamwasfirsttobearthatlabel.

Ofcourse,thenamecaughtonandbecameaNebraskabyword, eventually becoming the official nickname forthestate.

TherewasnoofficialsymbolofaCornhusker,andvariouscartoonistshavecaricaturedthemysticalsomethingthattypifiesNebraskafootball—somewinningfanapprovalandothersarousingfanire.

Thecartooncharacter,“HerbieHusker,”evolvedoutofNebraska’striptothe1974CottonBowlinDallas.ArtistDirkWestofLubbock,Texas,designedaCornhuskercartoonfortheCottonBowlpressheadquartersthatcaughttheeyeofformerHuskerSIDDonBryant.Later,BryantcontactedWestforpermissiontousethecartoon,andWestexpressedadesiretorefinehisoriginalcartoonandimprovesomeofthecharacter’sfeatures.Asaresult,WestwascommissionedtodrawanoriginalCornhuskercartooncharacterthatservedasamascotforallHuskerathleticteams.

“Herbie”istheregisteredlogooftheCornhuskerAthleticDepartment, which controls its use. West’s concept ofNebraska football is appropriate—a burly, rugged andconfidentfellowwhoisproudofboththeathleticandtheagriculturaltraditionsoftheUniversityofNebraska.

In2003,“Herbie”enjoyedaresurgenceinthespotlightasheunderwentamakeover,helpinghimbetterportrayNebraska's "image of strength and power." A new andimproved“Herbie”wasunveiledAug.30,2003.

AlongwithHerbie,theathleticdepartmentunveiledLil’Red,theCornhuskers’contemporarymascot,in1994.Lil’RedhasbeencommonlyseenonthesidelineofallNebraskaathletic teams in recent yearsand remainsNU’s officialmascotalongwith“Herbie.”

Forteamsaroundthecountry,anewseasonbringsnewchallenges,and it isnodifferentatNebraska.Followingthe departure of four AVCA All-Americans and the mostsuccessfulseniorclassinschoolhistory,peoplehavepeggedtheHuskerstobeinarebuildingmodethisyear. To Nebraska Coach John Cook, the upcoming seasonremindshimof2003,whentheHuskersreplacedanotherlegendarygroupofseniorswithaclassofsixnewcomers.Thatclassbecamethefoundationofthe2006nationaltitleteam,andCookseesthesametraitwiththisyear’sgroup-seniorleadership. “What I’ve seen so far is that Jordan (Larson),Rachel (Schwartz) and Amanda (Gates) understandwhat needs to be done in the offseason and summer,and what it takes to be a great team,” Cook said.“Theyhavetheexperienceofwinningatitleandhavebeenamajorpartofoursuccessovertheyears.Wearebringinginfivenewplayers,andourseniorshavebeenproactivein making them feel comfortable and helping to buildrelationshipsthatareneededtobesuccessful.” Whileothersseeasquadshortonexperience,Cookseesahungryteamthatisanxioustoprovethedoubterswrong.HewasimpressedbytheHuskers’effortsinthespringseason,andunderstandsthe2008Huskerscanonlyreachtheirgoalsiftheyplaytogetherandusetheircollectivestrengths. “Ourmarginforerrorwillbelessthanlastyear,especiallywiththescoringchange(goingfrom30pointspersetto25),”Cooksaid.“ThethingIwasmostencouragedaboutduringthespringwasourabilitytobeanexceptionalserving,passinganddefensiveteam.Isawusplayataveryhighlevelinthoseareas.Wehavethepotentialtomaketeamsveryuncomfortablewithourservinganddefense,andourabilitytosideoutatahighlevel. “Ifwecanpasstheballinsystem,wehavethehitterswhocanputtheballaway.Wewillhavetorelyonthemandbebetterwithourfirstcontact.”

Libero/Defensive Specialist IftheHuskersaregoingtobeastrongdefensiveteam,theplayofRachelSchwartzandKaylaBanwarthwillkeyNebraska’s defensive efforts. Cook said one of the mostcompetitivepositionbattlesinthefallwillcomehere,asthepairsplittimeatliberoanddefensivespecialistin2007. “RachelandKaylaarebattling for thestarting liberoposition,andbothwillhavechancestomakesignificantcontributionsbecauseofourpersonnel,”Cooksaid. Schwartzstartedthemajorityof2007attheliberospot,ranking11thintheBig12withacareer-best3.66digsperset.Shehad17matcheswithatleast10digs,includingacareer-high21digs inafive-setvictoryoverMissouri.Inaddition,shehasbeenoneoftheHuskers’topserversthroughouthercareer. “Rachel showed that she can play at a high level ateitherliberoordefensivespecialistoverthelasttwoyears,”Cooksaid.“Shehasagreatopportunitytomakeamajorimpactonthesuccessofourteam,andislookingforwardtoastrongsenioryear.” Banwarth’semergenceasafreshmanlastseasonwasawelcomedevelopmentfortheHuskers.Shesawmoretimeastheseasonprogressed,startingNU’sfinalninematchesatlibero,wheresheaveraged4.24digsperset.Banwarthreacheddoublefiguresineightofherninestarts,includingallfourNCAATournamentmatches. “TheexperiencethatKaylagainedlastyearwasvaluablein her development,” Cook said. “She was in a lot ofmeaningfulmatchesforusattheendoftheseason,andthegamestartedtoslowdownforher.Wesawthatduringthespringwhenshewasoneofourbestpassers.”

Middle Blockers Arguablythedeepestpartoftheroster,theHuskershavefivemiddleblockersontheroster,includingtwo-yearstarterKoriCooperandseniorAmandaGates.

Setter Theretirementoftwo-timeAll-AmericanRachelHollowayinJanuaryalongwiththegraduationofthree-yearletterwinnerMaggieGriffinchangedthedynamicsofthesetterpositionatNU.TheHuskershavethreesettersonthe2008roster,includingtransfersSydneyAndersonandJessicaYanz,butnone of the three have played a match for the Huskers.Freshman Brigette Root joins the pair of transfers afterwalkingontotheHuskerprograminthefall. Outside Hitters Nebraska’sattackhasshowcasedtheall-aroundabilitiesofitsoutsidehitters.Lastyear,bothChristinaHoughtellingandJordanLarsonearnedAll-Americahonors,andLarsonwillhaveanopportunitytobecomeonlythesixthoutsideattackerinschoolhistorytobeathree-timeAVCAAll-American. SophomoreTaraMuellerreturnsafterbackingupbothoutsidespotslastyear,whileNUalsowelcomesoneofthenation’stopoutsidehittingrecruitsinfreshmanKaitlynnJames. NCAA Changes for 2008 SeasonFansmaynoticeseveralchangesthathavebeenimplementedforthe2008season.Herearesomeofthemoresignificantchangesfortheupcomingyear:

Rule ChangesCoaches Position.Whentheballisinplay,coacheswillbeaskedtostayatleast1.75metersfromthecourt’ssideline.Animaginarylineperpendiculartotheoutsideedgeoftheextendedattacklineindicatesthisdistance.Ifacoachdoesn’tcomply,therefereesmayassessateamdelaysanction.

Terminology.:Theterm“game”willbechangedto“set.”Amatchstillconsistsofthebestthreeoutoffivesets.

Points Required to Win a Set:Insteadof30points,thenumberofpointsneededtowinsetsonethroughfourisnow25(andatwo-pointlead).Fifteenpoints(andatwo-pointlead)isstilltherequirementtowinthefifth(deciding)set.

Substitutions:Eachteamisnowallowedamaximumof12substitutionsperset.

Points of EmphasisBall-Handling Decisions. In recent years, referee training has emphasized focusingontheplayer’scontactpointwiththeball,andnotallowingoutsideinfluences,suchasspinafterrelease,toinfluenceball-handlingdecisions.A2008pointofemphasisregardingthesecondteamcontactnowinstructsrefereestoonlycallmultiplecontactsthat are obvious enough to be readily seen, and to be less severe when judgingextremelyathleticplays.
