Manhattan is one of the boroughs of New

York City. Located primarily on

Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the

borough are identical to those of New York County, an original

county of the state of New York

o Manhattanization is a neologism coined to describe

the construction of many tall or densely situated

buildings which transforms the appearance and

character of a city.

oIt was a pejorative word used by critics of the highrise

buildings built in San Francisco during the 1960s and

1970s, who claimed the skyscrapers would block views

of the surrounding hills.

o Recently, "Manhattanization" has been used to

describe the recent real estate developments in Miami.

oThe term has also gained usage as a buzzword for

recent high-density developments in Las Vegas,

Nevada.
