Crickhowell High School Governors Annual Report To Parents 2016/2017 Ysgol Uwchradd Crughywel Adroddiad Yllywodraethwyr I Rieni Am Y Flwyddyn 2016/2017
I am delighted to report that the school year 2016-17 has been another successful one for Crickhowell High School with excellent examination results and the school achieving Green status again. There is continued growth and development across the school in so many key areas. Our exam results at GCSE and at A-Level are excellent. We are pleased to see 88% of our students achieve the Level 2 Threshold (5 A* to C grades at GCSE or the equivalent) with 84% achieving the L2+ Threshold (5 A* to C grades at GCSE with English and Maths) and over 52% of grades awarded at A*/B. At A-Level 39% of all grades awarded were at A* and A; 67% were A*-B and 100% of grades were A – E. Key Stage 3 saw the highest number of levels achieved by students in Year 9 at 5+, 6+ and 7+ and we continue to attract a wide number of students into every year group of the school from an increasingly wide area." We have continued to expand the range of subjects and vocational options available to students in order to ensure the best
learning pathway is available for every student whatever their talent, ability and needs. Our constant focus is to meet changing
needs, to continue to work together and to extend partnership opportunities ensure the highest quality and provision in all areas
of education and training. We have also this year further enhanced our ICT facilities across the school to include wider
opportunities for the use of technology to enhance learning.
Whilst we are delighted with these outstanding results, the core business of our school ethos remains the wellbeing of all in our
community and the values, which underpin every aspect of our work. We strive to provide a nurturing and purposeful
environment where every learner can flourish and develop as an individual. We are constantly amazed by our students’
achievements and proud of their individual talents and success.
Every day the school is an exciting mixture of academic study, extra-curricular activities, sporting events, community participation
and a range of clubs far too numerous to mention here. Our newsletters and website reflect the rich diversity of school life and I
recommend you take the time to delve into them.
Our school Prospectus is available on our website and has been updated to include our latest curricular and extracurricular
activities.
Our vision of continual improvement guides us on our journey and whilst financial constraints are a barrier we must overcome, we
are optimistic we can exceed our targets for improvement and make Crickhowell High School even better with each new academic
year.
None of this would be possible without the commitment of students, staff, parents, governors, our cluster primary schools and the wider community. I am extremely proud of and grateful for the dedicated team of professionals who work at Crickhowell High School to ensure the ambitions and academic success of all our students will become a reality. Equally, I would like to thank all parents, guardians and carers for your wonderful support, which makes everything possible.
Yours sincerely
Jackie Parker Headteacher

ALN Report 2016/2017
Eleven students were subjects of Statements of Educational Need at September 2016. The number of students
without statements, who were maintained on the SEN register, fluctuated but was 110 at September 2016.
Therefore, at that date the total was 121 students.
78 students were granted special arrangements when undertaking GCSE examinations. The concessions included
reader, scribe, and use of word processor, practical assistant, extra time, prompter, supervised rest breaks and
transcriber. The Teaching Assistants (TAs) carried out the duties of reader, scribe, practical assistant, prompter and
transcriber. Staffing levels within the Department were as follows:
Mrs Janice Morgan, Additional Learning Needs Manager, Mrs N Thomas SENCO, 1 part-time voluntary SPLD Teacher,
8 full-time Teaching Assistants and a Learning Coach. Additional teaching support was provided by a specialist EAL
(English as an Additional Language) Teacher, a specialist Teacher for the Deaf and a specialist Teacher for vision.
Teaching staff delivered programmes of Study in Literacy and Numeracy Skills whilst TAs provided classroom support
for students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Teaching Assistants undertook Literacy and Numeracy interventions
and delivered to selected students during registration under the guidance of the Literacy/Numeracy Coordinator. They
also managed a Homework Club each lunchtime with access to computers. The Learning Coach offered her expertise
to students in Upper school offering help, guidance and mentoring. She also staffed a regular weekly drop in for
students who were feeling stressed or worried about their exams and offered advice on revision techniques.
Staff development opportunities included courses/lectures on literacy and numeracy, Exam concessions and the yearly
refresher course in Manual Handling, safety issues, Child protection, Evolve, Epipen training and CPD covering all
aspects of the role of a TA.
The Department worked very closely with the School Leadership Team, School Student Support Officer, Child
Protection Officers, Learning Leaders, Progress Leaders, Examination Officer SET Officer, Primary School Staff, Area
Educational Psychologists (Powys and Monmouthshire), ALN Governor, Occupational Therapists, Visual Impairment
Service, SEN Careers Wales and other relevant agencies, to ensure the needs of the pupils are met.

Physical Education Report 2016-17
The Department continues to provide a broad and balanced programme of activities for all students within curriculum
time and additionally we are able to support a number of extra-curricular activities and groups. We continue to publish
time and days of school practices in the School Newsletter and on the School Website in order to ensure that parents
are kept in touch with the range of activities available. One of our aims is always to provide opportunities and links to
the community, enabling students to achieve their full potential.
There are a large number of students who have represented South and Mid Wales, Powys, Wales and the school in
Athletics, Cross-country, Netball, Sailing, Water polo, Hockey, Rugby, Football, Equestrianism, Tennis and Swimming.
We continue to be encouraged by the number of students who are committed to and consistently involved in sport.
We play representative fixtures against other schools in Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball, Badminton, Tennis,
Gymnastics, Cricket and Athletics. We also enter County tournaments and competitions. We were winners of the
Under 18 Netball tournament. We won the plate in the USW rugby sevens competition. We also won the Welsh TOPS
Schools Badminton Tournament with our girls team and runners up with the boys. Two senior Netball Teams
successfully competed in the Brecon Evening Leagues. We also organised and participated in the Under 14 7-a-side
Hockey league which takes place every Wednesday on the Astro-turf pitch at Brecon. A number of our older students
have become coaches and referees in a variety of sports. In May, our athletics did particularly well in the Powys Track
and Field event. We have regularly entered teams in the South Powys Cross Country Leagues with both individual and
team successes. The Year 10, 11 and sixth boys football teams won the Powys tournaments.
Our strong ties with the community continue to help with a number of sports. It has been encouraging to see the
development of Gymnastics, Basketball and Tennis in the community.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is now flourishing with nearly 300 students completing various sections of the
Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. This year there was a record take up of over 76 students at Bronze, which we were
able to accommodate due to our link with the Crickhowell Volunteer Bureau.
The season concluded with a celebration of our students’ successes in a Sports Awards Evening held at the Clarence
Hall. Jason Strange was guest speaker and over one hundred students received awards.

Supplementary Information
Teaching Standards, Curriculum Developments and General Matters We continue to focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning, building upon our Estyn Report of 2012 and
its subsequent recommendations. Teaching and learning is our core business and the learner is at the heart of the
school. This links with our very strong pastoral care and an excellent PSE Programme as well as our rich extra-curricular
provision. Yearly improvements and targets are identified in our School Improvement Plan and monitored through
our Quality Assurance Calendar. This is supported by regular lesson observations, regular work scrutiny, learning walks
and robust Faculty Reviews as well as our School Effectiveness Framework which includes annual Faculty Exam review
interviews. This is also closely linked to our programme of staff development and training.
The school’s curriculum policy has been developed in line with the Powys Curriculum Statement Document 2009 and
continues to develop through regular curriculum review involving all stakeholders as part of the Estyn 2012
recommendations. The purpose of Crickhowell High School is to educate all its students to the maximum of their
potential and this means offering a curriculum that is fit for this purpose. Our aim encapsulates the drive to maintain
and improve high standards and to develop a curriculum for lifelong learning. Our curriculum objectives mirror those
laid out in the Powys Curriculum Statement 2009:
1) To develop our students as successful and independent learners.
2) To develop our students as confident individuals.
3) To develop our students as responsible citizens.
Our curriculum is built on the following principles:
1) A focus on the learner and a learner profile
2) Emphasis on subject specific and cross curricular skills development.
3) A focus on continuity and progression 3-19.
4) Flexible individual learning pathways.
5) Relevance to the 21st Century and a national and global context.
6) Supporting Government Policy.
7) Meeting National Curriculum requirements.
8) Ensuring Equal Opportunities and ‘Entitlement for all’.
9) Continuity and links with the primary, further and higher education sectors.
10) Appropriate Assessment, Recording and Reporting of Attainment by students.
Welsh Language Provision
All students study Welsh as a second language in Key Stage 3 & 4 and a number of students study Welsh First Language.
At GCSE students study either Welsh Short Course or Full Course and at A-Level students study Welsh AS and A2.
Incidental Welsh and the Welsh Culture is an important part of our school ethos.

Management Issues We have had 775 students on roll for 2016-2017.
Premises A decoration and refurbishment plan continues, phased over the next two years. The Youth Area was acquired from Powys County Council and was refurbished, including Playgroup Rooms and Function Rooms, converting them into a Fitness Suite and Dance Studio. New toilets were installed for the Sixth Form area to be ready for September 2015. A second phase of toilet refurbishments was completed for 2015.
Toilets The toilet facilities within the school are cleaned daily and there is an annual programme for redecoration/refurbishment.
Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship The school is committed to education for healthy living and global citizenship. We teach sustainable skills and healthy living as part of the PSE programme as well as the promotion of healthy eating and drinking. Our school canteen operates within the Welsh Government Guidelines for Healthy Eating.
