Rationale
Young people…
most connected populations to the Internet
have created a communication and social culture on popular social networking communities (i.e. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube
etc.)
Paucity of research examining this new social frontier –
specifically the role of gambling!
Is This Gambling?
Definition of Gambling:
Gambling is defined as risking money or something of value on a game involving chance
when the outcome is uncertain
Yes this is Gambling!
Korn & Shaffer, 1999
Environmental Scans

assess internal and external surroundings
and the forces at work within the health, social and
political contexts
Hatch & Pearson (1998)
Research Questions
1.
What are the current gambling opportunities that exist on today’s social popular networking sites? (i.e. Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, Hi5)
2.
How are young people communicating about gambling on popular social networking sites? (i.e. Twitter)
Limitations
Snap-shot of gambling opportunities over the course of three month
Results not generalizable to all social networking sites
Not an assessment of potential for gambling-
related harms
Conclusions
Gambling opportunities (direct & indirect) on social networking sites is ubiquitous!
More research is needed!
