Programme Information

YA Peer Leaders is an intervention which aims to:

‘Increase the activity levels of the least active youngpeople through the delivery of

inclusive, engaging activity led by YoungAmbassador Peer Leaders’

Evidence & Feedback

• 79% of boys and 84% of girls aged 5 – 15 years old are not meeting the minimum recommended guidelines for physical activity (Source:

Health & Social Care Information Centre (2013) Health Survey for England 2012: Chapter 3, Physical activity in children).

• Primary to Secondary Transition of leaders and participants

• Playground break time initiatives are amongst the most promising interventions for improving levels of physical activity, as shown by a number of recent authoritative systematic reviews (Source: T.Gill (2014)

Programme Delivery

Programme Outline

• 10 peer leaders deliver 12 sessions of physical activity to 10 peers/younger students (100 participants in total)

• Participants should be identified due to their lack of engagement in the PE and School Sport offer and not meeting the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) physical activity requirements of 60 minutes per day

Evaluation

• Green paper evaluations- session 1 and session 12 for each participant

• Blue paper evaluations- session 1 and session 12 for YA Peer Leader

• Online evaluation for teachers in February • Case studies and in depth evaluation • Report

What does the research tell us (Girls Active)?

• Only 15% of girls aged 17 – 18 take part in at least 3 hours of PE and school sport each week compared to 68% of girls aged 10-14

• By age 14, just under 10% of girls achieve

the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day

• 51% of less active girls say PE and sport

put them off being physically active

• Nearly a quarter of today's young people (23%) think playing a computer game with friends is a form of exercise

• 35% of young people say they speak to friends more on social media than in person

• Over 40% of young people would like to do more exercise.
