Paul offers his readers frequent treatments of and references to the Return of Christ. In this presentation, I examine one of his two quintessential rapture/resurrection passages and seek to place its elements in the context of our everyday Christian life.

XVI: THE RAPTURE AND THE RESURRECTION

Paul States the Facts

Modern Christians too easily treat teachings on the Rapture and

Resurrection as optional add-ons to an otherwise effective Christian life.

Paul considered these teachings “elementary” (Hebrews 6:1) with respect

to the Christian experience.

So, dear Watson, let’s deal with all things elementary.

I CORINTHIANS 15:50

50. Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

THE PROBLEM:

We cannot enter the kingdom of God in our fleshly bodies

I CORINTHIANS 15:51

51. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed . . .

THE SOLUTION:

“WE” all change: both those who “SLEEP” and those who do not sleep at some moment of ‘change’.

I CORINTHIANS 15: 51

51. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-

“I” the writer, “YOU” the reader and “WE” the

combination of the two:

Does Paul talk to you and me?

Does Paul include us 21st century Christians

when he writes to 1st century Corinthians?

Paul: Can I press you for some information about this ‘change’ thingie?

I CORINTHIANS 15:5252. in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

WHEN

EVENT 1: The Dead Rise

EVENT 2: “We” (the living and

the dead) all ‘change’ together.

53. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.

THE CHANGE!

CHRIST: OUR MODEL FOR THIS ‘CHANGE’

8. And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. 9. And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.” (Matt 28)

37. But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. 38. And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39. “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” (Luke 24)

40. And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41. While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42. They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43. and He took it and ate it before them. (Luke 24)

24. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” (John 20)

31. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. (Luke 24)

36. While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.”(Luke 24)

26. After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” (John 20)

54. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.

55. “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” 56. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57. but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our glorious transformation,

this ‘change’, has immense

spiritual significance!

PAULINE PRACTICE

Paul does not leave later Christians wondering what they

should DO NOW with this information:

Paul tells us how we APPLY this information

to our walk with the Lord.

I CORINTHIANS 15:5858. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
