SECURITY

The 1325 family of resolution

• Why is it important that it is security council resolutions?

Human security

• “During the cold war, security tended to be defined almost entirely in terms of military might and the balance of terror. Today, we know that ‘security’ means far more than the absence of conflict. We know that lasting peace requires a broader vision encompassing areas such as education and health, democracy and human rights, protection against environmental degradation, and the proliferation of deadly weapons. We know that we cannot be secure amidst starvation, that we cannot build peace without alleviating poverty, and that we cannot build freedom on foundations of injustice. These pillars of what we now understand as the people-centered concept of ‘human security’ are interrelated and mutually reinforcing.”

• Kofi Annan

R2P

• is a United Nation initiative established in 2005. It is a set of principles based on the idea that soveriegnity is not a right, but a responsibility. R2P focuses on preventing and halting four crimes: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.[

The Responsibility to Protect has three "pillars".

• A state has a responsibility to protect its population from mass atrocities;

• The international community has a responsibility to assist the state to fulfill its primary responsibility;

• If the state fails to protect its citizens from mass atrocities and peaceful measures have failed, the international community has the responsibility to intervene through coercive measures such as economic sanctions. Military intervention is considered the last resort.

MDG

War against terrorism

One year of military spending would be enough to:•600 year of UN’s regular annual budget•2 998 years of the cost for UNWomen•43 years of the total cost to give all women in the world access to sexual and reproductive healthcare •4% of the world’s military spending would be enough to reach the MDG by 2015
