Working with BC Hydro’s New Home Program

BC Hydro is offering financial incentives for single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings that achieve an ENERGY STAR® rating. This incentive applies to both natural gas and electrically-heated single-family detached homes, duplexes, and townhomes/row homes that meet the ENERGY STAR for New Home Standard, and for laneway homes that meet an EnerGuide rating of 82 or above.

Applying Incentive Region Wide

Builders/developers like:• Level playing fields• Clear and consistent rules

Consistency across the region has the potential to increase uptake – it can become the ‘way of doing business.’ Is it possible for all communities to set the same standard?

It is important to create demand for EG80+ homes to increase uptake:• Work with realtors and home owners to create demand• Are there any homeowners with 80+ homes willing to serve as pilots,

spokespersons?• Ensure that there are responsive professionals available within short time frame to

complete assessments• Recognize the high performers in some way• Have a sustainable funding source

Possible Regional District Support

• Adopt a building permit rebate program within RD jurisdiction• Promote individual community programs on website• Provide a list of energy advisors and contact information• Consider providing support for very small communities
