Mineral resources play an essential role in our society. They are critical in almost all sectorsof the French economy, from building to IT, including ti^nsport industi^ andtelecommunications.
The importance of these sectors of tiie economy and tiie increasing intemational competitionover access to resources justify a careful monitoring fliat will assist the security of domesticsupply. The Worid Mining and Metals Yearbook provides such intelligence data.
The \Afater and Biodiversity Division - which is in charge of tiie mineral resources portfolio intiie Departinent of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea - is following witiigreat interest the sector environmental and energy supply trends. This issue has become agovernment priority and the Minister has produced an action plan concerning strategicmetals at a ministerial meeting held on 27 of April 2010.
The knowledge of national and intemational production and trade statistics for variousmineral resources is now essential. France and other European countries non-ferrous metalsupplies mostiy rely on imports. Therefore a good knowledge of the origin and productionvolume of mineral resources should improve mari

Foreword
1 - Definitions and useful information
Fiscal Years (FY). Generally speaking, theproduction, consumption and foreign trade figuresgiven In the Yearbook are for the civil year (CY). For afew countries, which by law use a FY, we endeavourto amend the published figures from FY to CY.
Footnotes. References to footnotes, like the symtx)ls'*' (estimation) and 'r' (revised data), are given on therigiit-hand side of the relevant figure.
Glossary. The abbreviations, acronyms, technicalwords and symbols are explained in the glossary, which has been updated in this edition.
Production, consumption and foreign trade. Thestatistical tables allow the reader to follow changesoccurrir^ over several past years n the mine andmetallurgical production, consumption and importsand exports of metal.
The data presented within these tables include:
- mine production: metal content, based on assay, ofdirectly usable ores and concentrates.
N.B.: some countries publish their mine production interms of recoverable metal; a footnote indicates suchcases.
- metallurgical production: weight of refined metal iningot produced from either ore or concentrate (primarymetal) or recovered by processing scrap or waste(secondary metal). It does not include remelted metal.
Lead. Full secondary production figures are givenseparately. The lead total production figures includethe lead content of directly produced antimonial lead.
Nickel. Metal production figures include the nickelcontent of the ferronickel produced for direct use.
- intermediate metallurgical products: separatefigures are given for alumina, pig iron and blistercopper, in any case. In some tables, data are offeredfor other intermediates such as lead bullion, Sb, Mo or
NI oxide. Ni matte, etc., when their trade is significant.
- consumption: in general, consumption figures areapparent consumption of refined metal (AC =production + imports - exports).
In some case, consumption figures may be calculatedas follows:
Production of refined metal
+ imports of refined metal- exports of refined metal
changes in refined metal stock
A few producing countries take into account both theirdomestic shipments and net imports and calculatetheir own consumption; it represents the quantity ofunwrought refined metal delivered to firsttransformation industries, for all end uses. It may differmarkedly from the data provided by other countriesthat include the consumption of both the remeltedmetal and the metal processed from directly recycledscrap.
N.B.: consumption figures include, for lead, the leadcontent of antimonial lead, and for nickel, the nickel
content of the directly consunned ferronickel.
- foreign trade: a detailed breakdown of imports andexports of most of the metals under review is providedfor the main producing or consuming countries.Detailed imports and exports statistics for the year2008 are included in this edition, where available at
the time of compiling the tables.
Rounding. Because of independent rounding, totalfigures may differ slightly from the result given byadding up the relevant country figures.
Statistical updates. Many data are revised during ourstatisticians meetings as a result of new first-handinformation that has come to light. Updates have beenmade to the figures for several years prior to 2007,with some series being entirely reformulated. Suchfigures are followed by a 'r' in the right-hand side.
Unavailable data. It remains sometimes impossible tofind accurate first-hand data. Estimates -indicated in
the tables by an asterisk- are offered for most of theunavailable data. Data that could not be reasonablyestimated are marked "n.a." (not available).
N.B.: in the "Exchange rates and metal prices" tables, the series that are no longer published are followed byeither "suspended" (common case) or "abandoned"(permanently unavailable).
Units. They are always metric (SI) units and appear inthe upper left corner of the tables as follows:- unit: tonnes (common case),- unit: kilograms (gold and platinum tables),- unit: thousand tonnes (iron ore, pig iron and steel;
stainless steel; worid table on
p. 12). See also the glossary.
Specific cases:
- Exchange rates tables: the name and symtx)l ofeach currency are given at the top of the columns,
- Metal prices tables: units are given in light typebeneath the name of the relevant exchange's country.
2 - Recent changes introduced in tiieYearbook
Chief producers data. These tables have beenentirely revised in the 2003 issue. Some other updatehave tjeen made in this issue.
Country names. Some changes have been made inthe previous editions. On July 2003, Yugoslavia F.Rep. became Serbia & Montenegro, which split upinto Serbia and independent Montenegro on June2006; South Korea becomes Korea Rep.; North Koreabecomes Korea P. D. Rep.; Ivory Coast becomesCte d'Ivoire (abbreviations are explained in theglossary).
Exchange rates and metal prices. This chapter hastieen completely redesigned and updated in the 2002issue. A palladium, platinum and rhodium prices tatjiehas been added in the 2003 issue.
Rules have t)een inserted in the exchange rates andmetal prices series to mark discontinuities (change ofquality, specification, standard, unit or currency).
A chemical conversion table (compounds to metal, metal to compounds) has been added in the 2002issue.
Groups of countries. The increased availability ofproduction and foreign trade statistics enabledcontinental groupings to be re-established from 2002.The Central Eurasia and CIS groups have beenabolished and the concerned countries distributed
between Europe (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus,Georgia, Moldavia, Russia, Ukraine) and Asia (China,Korea P. D. Rep., Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia,Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). These changesare all noted in the Glossary (cf CIS, Europe, etc.).
Only the European Union (EU) group has beenmaintained throughout, and redesigned on two seriesof tables: EU 15 to maintain data continuit/ and EU25/27 to conform to EU enlargements (25 countries in2005 and 2006, 27 from 2007 onwards.
Studied metals and countries. The recent editions
have iDeen enlarged with several new national tables.Conversely, a few other national tables have beendeleted because no longer justified.
Trading figures in concentrates (copper, lead, tin, zinc), matte (copper and nickel) and ferro-alloys havebeen added in several national tables.
Ex-CIS tables (aluminium, copper, lead and zinc)have teen completely redesigned in the 2003 issueand renamed Russia & CIS .
Turkey: as accurate foreign trade figures are availablesince 2004, aluminium and copper tables are updatedand zinc table has been reintroduced in the 2005
issue.

1 - Dfinitions et informations pratiques
Anne fscsrie.
- unit: tonnes (cas gnral),- unit: kilogrammes (tableaux or et platine),- unit: thousand tonnes (tableau mondial, p. 12 ;
minerai de fer, fonte et acier ;
acier inoxydable).
Cas particuliers :

2 - Modifcations recentes apportes i'Annuaire
Groupes d'Etats.

Aluminium - Aluminium
Th production and consumption figures for the differentmetals Included In this yeartxjok comply with OECDdefinitions. For aluminium:
"Prirnary metal, i.e. produced from alumina iningots, billets, cakes and wire bar"
Also included for each pf the major producing countriesare statistical tables giving Ijauxlte, alumina andsecondary aluminium production, as well as a detailedimport/export breakdown of alloyed and unalloyedaluminium.
Aluminium is chiefly produced from bauxite, byelectrolysis of the intermediate product, alumina. Russiaand Kazakhstan also produce alumina from other Al-bearir^ raw materials such as nephellne syenite oralunite. This production is Included in our statisticaltables. A footnote indicates such process particularities.
However, aluminium is also recovered in large quantitiesfrom scrap by the recycling industry. This is referred toas secondary production.
Note: the figures for tiauxite and alumina are expressedin gross weight (and not in metal content), which isstandard practice in the aluminium industry.
Dfinitions
The general term "scrap" includes new scrap, derivingfrom manufacturing operations (rejects and residues),and old scrap (discarded products and waste).
Dnitons
