WORLD DAY OF PEACE 2017
Perhaps the best known Catholic contribution to responding to violent conflict is the just war tradition, which was developed in
order to reduce recourse to war and to limit its humanitarian
consequences. But there is a second tradition as well.
Lesser known is our Catholic commitment to active non-violence and building a just peace. Gospel non-violence is not passive.
Rather, it entails active strategies such as peacebuilding, conflict
transformation, restorative justice, and unarmed civilian
protection. Seeking a just peace means preventing conflict by
addressing its causes, building relationships, and facilitating healing and restoration.
In his Message for the 50th World Day of Peace, celebrated on
Jan. 1, 2017, Pope Francis urges families, faith communities,
government leaders, and the international community to practice
non-violence and work to build a just peace.
As we seek to respond to this call, we can be inspired by
numerous contemporary examples, including Catholic Relief
Services’ peace and conflict resolution training in Central African
Republic (bit.ly/car-crs) and the work of Catholics in the U.S. to build peace in their local communities (bit.ly/peaceCCHD).
Working together, we can be vehicles of Gospel non-violence and
a just peace.
YOU CAN BE A PEACEMAKER.
In war-torn Central African Republic, Archbishop Nzapalainga collaborates with Muslim and Evangelical leaders to organize interfaith prayer gatherings, promote peace schools, and advocate for peace. The Archbishop invited Imam Layama and his family to live with him when it became too dangerous for them at home: bit.ly/CARpeace Photo credits 1: Philip Laubner/

WHAT YOU CAN DO
1. Pray. Use the Prayer for Peace in Our Communities (below)
with your family, school, faith community, or in other
settings.
2. Learn. Read the U.S. Catholic bishops’ The Harvest of
Justice is Sown in Peace (bit.ly/harvest-justice) especially
the section on “Two Traditions: Nonviolence and Just War.”
How do these words challenge you?
Learn about how faith communities are working for peace
around the United States (bit.ly/peaceCCHD) and world
(bit.ly/CRSpeace). How might the Holy Spirit be calling your
community to respond?
Look for reflections on Pope Francis’ World Day of Peace
message on ToGoForth.org.
3. Act. Join tens of thousands of others to advocate for
policies that build peace at home and around the world. For
current action alerts, visit ConfrontGlobalPoverty.org and USCCB Action Center (Votervoice.net/USCCB/home).
PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES
Let us pray . . . O Lord our God, in your mercy and kindness, no
thought of ours is left unnoticed, no desire or concern ignored.
You have proven that blessings abound when we fall on our knees
in prayer, and so we turn to you in our hour of need.
Surrounded by violence and cries for justice, we hear your voice
telling us what is required . . . “Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8).
Fill us with your mercy so that we, in turn, may be merciful to
others. Strip away pride, suspicion, and racism so that we may
seek peace and justice in our communities.
Strengthen our hearts so that they beat only to the rhythm of
your holy will. Flood our path with your light as we walk humbly
toward a future filled with encounter and unity.
Be with us, O Lord, in our efforts, for only by the prompting of your grace can we progress toward virtue.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Copyright © 2016, Therese Wilson-Favors. All rights reserved. Used with permission. Scripture quote taken from the New American Bible, Revised Edition, copyright © 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970,

In West Baltimore, St. Peter Claver parish seeks to build peace. Through peace walks with Bishop Madden, conversations about violence and racial justice, and documenting police misconduct, St. Peter Claver is living the Gospel call to build peace: bit.ly/petercl

PARENTS, HAVE YOU
EVER THOUGHT…
… WHEN do I start talking to my child about virtuous living and authentic love? … WHAT should I say?
… HOW do I let my child know that they are made in the image of God with inherent dignity?
… WHERE do I begin to teach them that their bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?
Family Honor will answer these questions and more during Leading & Loving, our new adult-only program for any
parent, grandparent or guardian of a child from birth to 11 years of age.
Leading & Loving is a unique Catholic program that will help you become more confident and competent in how to raise
virtuous children and how to respond to your young child’s questions about the truth & meaning of God’s gift of sexuality.
Topics include: • Our bodies as a visible sign of God to be honored • God’s gift of sexuality: How do I share its awe & wonder?
• The language of love: How do I speak it? • Dealing with tough issues with truth and mercy

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT
Do you know anyone who is separated or divorced and needs support?
There's no such thing as "Catholic divorce" but the bad news is Catholics do civilly divorce.
We're here to help and to encourage healing through the Sacraments where you'll personally
encounter Christ—with all His love and tender mercies. And that's the REALLY good news.
Our program features the powerful and inspiring real-life stories of civilly divorced Catholic men
and women who found help in the Church. This DVD-based program with leader support offers
the truth about love, marriage, divorce, & recovery from a faithfully Catholic perspective.
St. Peter Catholic Church located at 1701 Indian Creek Parkway in Jupiter, FL will be hosting a
new session of the Divorce Survival Guide Ministry on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. until 8:30
p.m. starting on January 10, 2017. For more information and to register, call Deacon John Collins
at 561-339-5709 or Judy Collins at 561-602-3988 before Friday, January 6, 2017.

MANDATORY GUARDIANSHIP
EDUCATION TRAINING
COURSE
Effective October 1, 1989, the Florida
Legislature completely revised the guardianship
statue (Chapter 744). In order to ensure that all
guardians understand their legal duties to both
their ward and the court, and in compliance with
the new statutes, the Legislature passed a law
(F.S. 744.3145) requiring all guardians to
complete a course of study approved by the
Chief Judge of the Circuit Court and taught by a
court-appointed organization.
The Circuit Court in Palm Beach County has
approved a training course which is sponsored
by the Palm Beach County Bar Association and
presented by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of
Palm Beach, Inc.
For information regarding course dates,
times, and location, contact Catholic Charities
at 561-345-2000 x208. As a guardian appoint-
ed by this Court, you are required to successfully
complete this training course within four (4)
months after your appointment as guardian.
FAILURE TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE
and file a certificate of completion with the
Clerk of the Circuit Court, Guardianship
Division, may result in court imposed sanctions
including removal as guardian, surcharge, and/or
refusal to award a guardian’s fee.
