CEMETERY & ARBORETUM

ThemildwinterandearlyspringhaveresultedintheCemeterybeinggreenerandmorecolorfulasearlyasanyonecanremember.WebeganourlawnmaintenanceinMarch.Ourtreesandflowersareasmuchasamonthaheadofschedule.

Themildtemperaturesslowedthetreeremovalscheduledforthiswinter,however,asignificantnumberofourtreesthatwereinpoorconditionhavebeenremovedandtheworkwillbeongoinguntiltheinitialremovalplaniscompleted.

CommitteesoftheFoundationBoardareactivelystudyingournextstepsintherestorationandenhancementofWoodlawn.TheBuildingsCommitteeisassessinganddevelopinganActionPlanforalleightofourbuildings.Thisplanningwillcontinueintothesummer.

TheLakesCommitteeissecuringinputfromtheOhioEPA,theCorpsofEngineersandotheragenciesandresourcestoestablishthebestconceptualplanpossibletoimproveandmaintainthelakes.WearealsoparticipatingwiththeToledoBotanicalGardensontheircurrentlakerenovationproject.

WewillcontinueoureffortstohaveWoodlawnlookinggreatthisspringandsummer.Ourentireteamishardatwork.OurappealseekingyourfinancialsupportfortheFoundationwassentoutinApril.Itismyhopeyouwillrespondandhelpprovideustheresourcestocontinuetomoveourplansforward.

TREE AND TOMBSTONE TOURS Spring: Sunday, May 20th Fall: Sunday, October 7th Themanyfamilystoriescontainedwithinitsgatesareliterallyetchedinstone.OurTreeandTombstoneToursaretheidealopportunitytoenjoyboththeseasonandhistory:90minutesofleisurelywalking,accompaniedbyourknowledgeablenaturalisthistoriansthroughourarboretum.(Thiseventisfreeandopentothepublic.)

PEDAL TOURS InpartnershipwithToledoMetropolitanAreaCouncilofGovernmentsandpromotingNationalBikeMonth,pedaltourswillcreateopportunitiesforpeopletoexploretheirneighborhoodsandcitiesbybicycle.Woodlawnwillbeofferingtwopedaltours.

BIKES, BIRDS AND BLOOMS Sunday, May 20th, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Joinusonafour-milescenicbikeridethroughWoodlawnCemetery.Thewindingpathsleadyouthroughbeautifulspringfloweringtreesandhabitatsrichwithmigratingbirds.Atscenicoutlooksalongtherouteourguideswillhelpusdiscoverwhatisaroundus.Bringbinocularsifyouhavethem.

ART, ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORYThursday, May 31st, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Joinusonthisbiketourforasamplingoftheart,architectureandhistoryofthefamilymausoleumsofWoodlawn.

MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATIONMonday, May 28thJoinusaswehonorthewarveteransofWoodlawn—includingsomewhoservedintheCivilWar—withamemorialserviceandfamilycelebration.Refreshmentswillbeservedfollowingthetraditionalceremony,whichfeaturestheblowingoftaps,atwenty-onegunsalute,music,marchingandmore.

MONTHLY SUMMER EVENING STROLLS Second Thursdays of June, July and August, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Joinusforatwilightwalkingtourthroughthegroundsofthecemetery.Overapproximately90minutes,ourguideswillleadusonthediscoveryofhistory,artandnature.

Summer HISTORY INTERNS WoodlawnwouldliketointroduceourtwoSummerHistoryInterns:DanaMarieBogartandBenjaminDougherty.ThroughoutthesummertheywillberesearchingourburiedtreasuresoftheCivilWarandToledo’sIndustrialPioneers.Theseinternswillhelpindevelopingdocentandfieldtriptrainingmaterials.Theywillalsobeassistingatupcomingpublicprograms.Ifyouhaveanyrelatedmaterialsorstoriesthatwouldaidintheirresearchpleasecalltheoffice.

What interests you about this internship?Iamlookingforwardtoresearchingaboutlocalpeopleinvolvedinanationaleventandpayingtributetothemandtheirfamilies.Historyismuchmorefunwhenyoucanconnectlocalstoriestoit.

What interests you about the Civil War? TheCivilWarinterestsmebecauseeveryonewasinvolvedintheCivilWarinonewayoranothersosomewherethereisalwaysastorytobetold.

What interests you about this internship?IwasinstantlyattractedtotheinternshipduetoWoodlawn’ssignificanceasalandmarkandfinalrestingplaceofsomeofToledo’smostprominentindividuals.

What interests you about the Pioneers of Toledo? IaminterestedinthePioneersofToledobecausetheyletusknowwhereToledocamefromandhowitwasshapedbytheseverydifferentpeopleasonelooksateachoftheirlifestories.

WoodlawnWomen’sHistoryAmbassadors:Discoveragreatwaytofosteryourpassionaboutwomen’shistorywhilehelpingtopreservethepastfortheenjoymentoffuturegenerations.Youreffortsareanopportunitytoempoweryounggirls(withourrecentlylaunchedGirlScoutprogram)byintroducingthemtostrongrolemodelsfromthepast.Meetnewpeople,shareinformation,andlearnthewonderfulcontributionsthewomenofWoodlawnhavemade.

Comeseehowthisprogramcanfitanyone’stimescheduleandmakeanimpactinkeepingwomen’shistorygrowing.

WoodlawnwouldliketothankDaveDerrickfromtheU.S.ArmyEngineerResearchandDevelopmentCenterandCherieA.Blair,theMaumeeRAPCoordinatoroftheOhioEnvironmentalProtectionAgency,forsharingtheirtime,talentsandexpertiseataStreamandLakeRestorationWorkshopheldonApril3rdatthecemetery.

Ms.BlairshowedhowWoodlawnhaspotentialtobepartofanInternationalRestoration/LocalImplementationoutreachprogram,withacommitmenttorestoringthe43GreatLakesAreasofconcern.WoodlawnlocallyispartoftheMaumeeWatershedandtheGreatLakesWatershedonalargerscale.Thiswatersheddrainsalmost200,000squaremileswithashoreline4,500mileslong.AsanAreaofConcern(AOC)intheGreatLakesregion,thislocationisaframeworkofpartnerships,goals,targets,andmeasureswithpossiblefundingsourcesalreadyestablished.

Mr.Derrickshowcasedhowsimilarstreamrestorationprojectswithhealthyhabitatswerereestablished.Bydevelopingstreambankplantingsandchangingwaterflow,asystemisdesignedtohandlesediments,establishinganaturalizedsystem.AprojectunderwayatToledoBotanicalGardenwasfeatured,providinganexcellentmodelandhighlightingpotentialpartnershipopportunities.

BoardMemberandCommitteeChairMikeYoung,whoinitiatedthisworkshop,isresearchingpartnershipstostarttheinitialsiteinventoryprocess.Theworkshopprovidedconcretestepstowardmakingthispartofourten-yearmasterplan—therestorationandbeautificationofourstreamsandlakes—areality.
