ADVANTAGES OF BLOOD DONATION

Lower Iron Levels

• Blood donation is an excellent way to get rid of excess iron.

• Excess iron in the body can stimulate the formation of free radicals, which are responsible for causing damage to body cells and tissues.

Cont.

• Free radicals are also associated with many diseases like heart diseases and cancer.

• Iron is involved in the oxidation of cholesterol and this process is believed to be detrimental for the arteries.

• Increases blood iron level favors this process of cholesterol oxidation and thus leads to heart disease.

Reduce Heart Attack Risk

• Florida Blood Services reports that regular blood donors who donate regularly over years have an 88 percent lower risk of heart attacks and a 33 percent lower risk of any severe cardiovascular event, such as a stroke.

Reduce Cancer Risk

• According to the Miller-Keystone Blood Center, consistent blood donation is associated with lowered risks for cancers including liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat cancers.

• Risk levels dropped in correlation with how often participants donated blood.

Replenish Blood

• Replenish your blood supply regularly.

• Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reports that when you donate blood, your body replaces the blood volume within 48 hours of donation, and all of the red blood cells you lose during donation are completely replaced within four to 8 weeks.

Invigorated feeling in elderly people

• It has been mentioned in various sites though not proved that elderly people in good health have reported feeling invigorated or reenergized by giving blood on a regular basis.
