A "wind farm" is a group of wind turbines in the same location used for production of electric power.

Individual turbines are interconnected with a medium voltage (usually 34.5 kV) power collection system and communications network.

At a substation, this medium-voltage electrical current is

increased in voltage with a transformer for connection to the high voltage transmission system

A large wind farm may consist of a few dozen to several hundred individual wind turbines, and cover an extended area of hundreds of square miles (square kilometers), but the land between the turbines may be used for agricultural or other purposes.

A wind farm may be located off-shore to take advantage of strong winds blowing over the surface of an ocean or lake.

Largest on-shore wind farms

• Alta wind energy center is the largest on-shore wind farm in the world

• It is situated in California, USA

• It's current generation capacity is 1320 MW

• Jaisalmer Wind Park is the second largest wind farm in the world.

• It is situated in Rajasthan, India.

• It's current generation capacity is 1064 MW.

Largest off-shore wind farms

• London Array (630 MW) and Great Gabbard (504 MW) are considered as the two largest off-shore wind farms in the world. Both are installed in UK.

• India has yet to start it's first off-shore project. TATA and ONGC had proposed three pilot projects in Gujarat and Tamilnadu.

The development of wind power in India began in the 1990s, and has significantly increased in the last few years. Although a relative newcomer to the wind industry compared with Denmark or the US, a combination of domestic policy support for wind power and the rise of Suzlon (a leading global wind turbine manufacturer) have led India to become the country with the fifth largest installed wind power capacity in the world.

As of 31 December 2013 the installed capacity of wind power in India was 20149 MW. Wind power accounts for 8.5% of India's total installed power capacity, and it generates 1.6% of the country's power.

• Wind speed variable and unreliable• Wind turbines produce large amounts of noise

pollution • Off-shore wind farms go some way to solving

these problems, but they are expensive to build and maintain. It is cheaper to put more coal into an existing power station than to build a new wind farm

• Death of migrating birds.

• Any impacts of wind energy should not be viewed in isolation.

• They should be judged against the far more serious environmental impacts of producing electricity from other energy sources
