History of learning

King Alfred

• King Alfred, 849-899 AD• Instrumental in reviving education

and scholarship in England• Supposedly educated in Rome• Established court school for his

children• Education "makes life more

rewarding and enjoyable;...the worst thing of all is ignorance"

• Enforced keeping of Anglo Saxon Chronicles, a standard in historical works of Britain

• It is said that he established the first university at Oxford.

Winchester Cathedral

• Founded 642• Major mediaeval centre of knowledge

– Winchester Troper 1000– Winchester Bible 1160-1175

Winchester College

• Founded 1382• Oldest of 9 Public

Schools in the 1868 Public Schools Act

• Expanded into current form from mid-19th Century onwards

Peter Symonds College

• Roots go back to charities established in the 16th Century at the bequest of Peter Symonds, a wealthy merchant and philanthropist

• Boys Grammar School from 1897

• Became a co-educational college for 16-19 year olds in 1974

Hyde Abbey School

• Educated 2 Prime Ministers• Closure in the 1850s

University of Winchester

• Est 1840 as Winchester Diocesan Training School

• Began offering BA and BEd degrees as King Alfred’s College in the 1970s

• Resumed its partnership with the University of Southampton in 1992

• University status in 2005

• Began awarding research degrees in 2008

Winchester School of Art

• Founded 1863• International

reputation for research and teaching in art and design

• Merged with University of Southampton in 1996
