Confessions: Good for the soul!

Long for the good ol’ days I didn’t need it; they don’t

computers are for games only; not true learning

DIGITAL NATIVESdig·it·al na·tive

noun

noun: digital native; plural noun: digital natives

1. a person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and therefore familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age.

Digital Natives are used to receiving information really fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text rather than the opposite. They prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards. They prefer games to "serious" work.- Marc Prensky in “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants”

Some Definitions Technology: The branch of knowledge

that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.

Innovation: Something new or different. (OR, something perceived as new or different)

Different Senses - Studies Standard Oil Study William Glasser Study

Learning Theories

Pedagogy: Study of teaching methods (education, attendance on children)

Andragogy: methods or techniques used to teach adults

Pedagogy Lecture “Minds full of mush” Rote memory and

regurgitation

Andragogy Adults learn when they

see the need Adults learn when they

can apply the lesson Adults learn best when

it is based on their experience

Every time you learn something new, your brain changes in a pretty substantial way. In turn, this makes other parts of your life easier because the benefits of learning stretch further than just being good at something.

- Thorin Klosowski in “The Science Behind How We Learn New Skills”

TEACHING STYLEWe teach as we were taught.

Jesus’ Teaching Style

“The greatest exponent of images, metaphors, and animations was Jesus himself. Metaphors and animations were more than oases so his listeners, and we readers, would keep on the journey. They were the journey.”

How do we teach? Multitasking: Expect things to be done

digitally, not so much with real pen and paper; also, expect them to be able to walk, talk, and chew gum at the same time.

Active vs. Passive: Learn by doing rather than through instructions; Think “Flipped Classroom” – what can they do before they come to class. Become the mentor rather than the fount of all knowledge.

How do we teach? Gamification: We don’t have to be

talking about X-box, but scenarios will allow students to role play, gaining an understanding for how a specific tool will work; application.

Friend vs Foe: Immigrants use technology as a tool; natives embrace technology as an extension of their very lives. How do we help them channel the use properly? Demonstration and experimentation.

Assumptions About Technology

Can not bring a dead message to life Does not guarantee an effective class Is not necessarily expensive to use Takes time to learn Does not have to be threatening Always have a backup

WHY USE TECHNOLOGY?

2. To redeem technology for the Kingdom’s sake.

THE PROBLEMS START WHEN ENTIRE PASSAGES OF TEXT ARE SET IN CAPITAL LETTERS. WORDS SET IN ALL CAPITALS HAVE A VERY RECTANGULAR SHAPE BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DESCENDERS. WORDS ARE NOT RECOGNIZED QUICKLY BECAUSE THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE.

I’ll Fly Away

Some glad morning When this life is o'er, I'll fly away;To a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away.

I'll fly away, O glory, I'll fly away; When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I'll fly away.

When the shadows of this life is gone, I'll fly away;Like a bird from prison bars have flown, I'll fly away.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
