WELCOMEWelcome to the 39th Annual
Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair!
We welcome each of our participants, guests, supporters and volunteers to the annual 2017 Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair. Without your support and participation, this event would not be possible. We are grateful
for your time, expertise, and willingness to share this day with us.
Congratulations to the students who have demonstrated excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through their hard work and
dedication, they have earned an opportunity to participate at this regional competition. They are to be commended for their hard work, innovation and
commitment to the study of science.
This year, we celebrate the theme of, “Ask WHY.” It is our hope that today’s participants recognize the power in unlocking possibilities when
asking the right questions. “Why did you select your science fair project?” “Why did you become an engineer?” “Why is the Gwinnett Science,
Engineering + Innovation Fair important to our community?”
It was once said, any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. Our goal of the event is to open students minds to a new line of thinking, allow them to discover new
passions and ultimately, encourage them to innovate ways to change the world. Thank you for being with us today and have a wonderful time at this year’s
Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair.
Dr. Jonathon WetheringtonDirector of Science, K-12
Gwinnett County Public Schools
Bonnie BrushDirector of Mathematics, K-12
Gwinnett County Public SchoolsRole of the Advisory Committee
• Advise and assist with securing presenters of dynamic programs for the fair connecting real world science and engineering applications to excite and encourage
students to further explore the areas of science and engineering. • Promote and enhance the overall quality of the event evaluating post
event and making recommendations for the next year.• Identify industry connections for career expo exhibitors, project judges and event
sponsorships to offset expenses and to provide scholarships and awards.
ADDITIONAL THANKSThis event would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of many individuals. This special thanks does not sufficiently recognize the magnitude
of each of their efforts and while space does not allow for each to be mentioned by name; many are valued for their hard work and contribution.

Thank you to the following people who have donated their time and expertise to serve as a judge. The students spent countless hours
completing their projects and are eager to share their work with experts in each field of science and engineering. The judge’s role of assessing the quality of work that students have developed in their projects is one of the most important roles at the event. The 2017
Fair could not be successful without the support of these influential individuals and we are grateful for their support and dedication to the
next generation of science and engineering leaders.

Jeffery Adams Office of Clinical Education,
Director of Simulation, Georgia Campus – Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine
MEDICAL SIMULATION: HELPING STUDENTS ACHIEVE CLINICAL COMPETENCE
Four state-of-the-art human patient simulators provide GA-PCOM medical students the opportunity to practice techniques and diagnosis in a supportive environment prior to treating real patients. The simulators breathe and have heartbeats, pupils that react to light and medications,
pulses that can be felt at eight locations, and lung sounds. They can also talk and accurately mimic human physiology responses to procedures such as CPR, intubation, ventilation and catheterization. Highlights of how these
simulators are used to teach clinical skills will be demonstrated.
With nine years of experience in the field of simulation, Jeffery Adams was recently named Director of Simulation for Georgia Campus – Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine (GA-PCOM). In this position, he will oversee the activities of the campus’ newly expanded Simulation Center which gives students the opportunity to practice clinical skills, develop
communication abilities and demonstrate clinical competence. Through the use of standardized patients or patient actors and patient simulators, the Center provides the opportunity to practice techniques and diagnosis in a
supportive environment prior to treating real patients.
Denis WrightTechnical Leader, Cisco Systems
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAR TREK!It’s 50 years since the first episode aired on NBC, in which a crew of astronauts aboard the Starship Enterprise explored a fictional
United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century.
Leaving aside for a minute the fun and games of exploring space: the final frontier, let’s look at the Starship itself. When our beloved program was first aired, the Enterprise represented a brave new world of connected devices. There were in-ship communication screens, a holodeck where alternate realities could be simulated with astonishing clarity, and teleports to instantly transport crew members from one place to another. Star Trek – inspiring the
Internet of Things?
Denis is currently a technical leader in the Services organization within Cisco Systems supporting large Service Provider companies.
He has been working for Cisco for 15 years and primarily works with the mobility sector.

Jay V Bassett, Chief Sustainable Materials Management,
U.S. EPA Region 4
HOW AMERICA IS LOSING UP TO 40 PERCENT OF ITS FOOD FROM FARM TO FORK TO LANDFILL
Food is simply too good to waste. Even the most sustainable farmed food does us no good if the food is never eaten. Getting food to our
tables eats up 10% of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50%of U.S. land, and swallows 80% of freshwater consumed in the United States.
Yet, 40% of food in the U.S. today goes uneaten. This session will give an overview of this national issue and how government, industry
and non-governmental organizations have come together and are working collectively to meet a national goal of a 50% Reduction in
Wasted Food by 2030. You will have an opportunity to contribute to this national discussion and leave with thoughts and ideas on how
students (and your future) can be part of the solution and make a difference.
Jay manages USEPA Region 4’s RCRA Subtitle C State, Solid Waste and Sustainable Materials Management programs for the eight
southeastern state Region consisting of Georgia, Florida, Alabama., South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky.
He is responsible for developing and implementing the Region’s Sustainable Materials Management program through promoting efforts
to manage materials and products on a life-cycle basis, building capacity and integrating materials management approaches in existing
government policies and programs, and accelerating the broad, ongoing public dialogue on sustainable materials management.
