• Definition-The unique style by which we express our identity in both speaking and writing.

• What does that mean?• What tools do we use to

Symbol and Tone

Diction

The writer’s choice of words; a stylistic element that helps convey voice and tone.

Example:I would say- Who is that?

Juliet, you look beautiful?You Would Say- Who dat?

Oh girl you look bangingShakespeare would say-

But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Syntax

• The arrangement of words and the order of grammatical elements in a sentence; the way in which words are put together to make meaningful elements, such as phrases, clauses and sentences.

Example: “I have a dream.”

Imagery

• The verbal expression of sensory experiences.

Example: A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the

breeze.Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the Milky Way~Wordsworth

Symbol

An item that represents something else.

Example: an Eagle is a symbol for GHS

Tone

• A writer’s or speaker’s attitude toward a subject

Example: Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real.~Tupac Shakur

Put it all together

• The joy of reading and writing great works is seeing through the writer’s eyes. The voice helps us to hear the author.
