Transcript of White River Protection Project

June 2009

80 acres of vulnerable land along the White River in the Town of Delta recently went up for sale.

Including 2000 feet of shoreline

“The last thing we all want to see is a string of condos or

cottages along this stretch of the White”

-Bill Heart, Council Chair of Wisconsin Trout Unlimited, Chair of Friends of the White River

The Bayfield Regional Conservancy, Trout Unlimited’s Wild Rivers

Chapter, and the Friends of the White River

are working together to buy the property and protect it for wildlife and recreation.

Why protect the White River?

Traversing one of Wisconsin's largest

wetlands, the 10,000 acre Bibon Marsh,

the White River is exceptionally pristine

and diverse.

"Trout anglers often speak of the White in almost reverent tones

because it harkens back to a day when Wisconsin was on the

country's frontier."

- Stephen Born in Exploring Wisconsin Trout Streams

Harboring high quality aquatic habitat, the White River’s 60 miles

of flow includes:

• 44 miles of DNR classified Outstanding or Exceptional Resource Waters

• 20 miles of Class 1 Trout Waters.

White River Watershed’s many habitats are home to rare and

threatened species

•Boreal Forest, •Tamarack Swamp,•Northern Wet Forest,•Northern Hardwood Swamp, •Alder Thicket,

Some of the White River’s many habitats include:

•Shrub Carr, •Northern Sedge Meadow, •Emergent Marsh, •Coldwater Streams, •Northern Dry Forest

including…

18 of which are of Greatest Need for Conservation in Wisconsin,

are found here

Why these 80 acres?

They include 2000 feet of shoreline on both sides of the River

They are on the edge of the great Bibon Marsh

They include highly developable, cleared upland all the way to the River

Their 2000 feet of shoreline habitat can be restored

They will be open for low impact public use

They are adjacent to a Wisconsin DNR fisheries area.

Public access will continue.

When State funds become available the DNR intends to buy them from us.

What can you do?
