Solution

Stay away, Keep out, Avoid, Avoid, Avoid Copying

If you…

Use someone else’s exact words and don’t put quotation marks around them

Don’t give credit for other people’s ideas, words and graphics in the text

Don’t cite quotes and ideas in the “Works Cited”

Solution

Indicate in notes – DQ - Direct quote

Always put quotation marks around exact

words from a text and include source in

Works Cited.

Unsure if it is a DQ – use quotes and cite

Never, ever make an exception.

If you…

Change just a few words

Change just the sentence order

Don’t put another writer’s ideas completely in your own words

Use your own words but don’t credit the author for her idea in the text and in works cited

© Revermann

Solution

Make sure you understand the idea.

Write your interpretation without looking at

the original text.

Reread your words and the original to

make sure they are not similar.

Credit the source in text and in

works cited.

© Quoting

Do I have to quote and cite

everything?

There is one exception:

Common knowledge known by most people

or easily found

Examples:

William Shakespeare is a famous

playwright

Marie Curie discovered radium

Is it worth the risk?

Eastlake’s Academic Honesty Policy

“If a student violates the academic honesty policy,

regardless of intent, the sanctions include:

First Offense: Zero points, no make-up, phone

call or email to parent.

Second Offense: (in same class) Automatic

withdrawal with failing grade. Letter signed

by teacher and administrator sent to parent”

(Eastlake 13).

Consequences in college

“Students expelled from U.Va. shipboard

program for plagiarism” "No one had ever defined paraphrasing for me,"

said Routman, who said she probably will have to

extend her college career by a quarter because

she won't get credit for Semester at Sea. "It was

one of those things I'd kind of heard; I didn't think

of what it was."

Routman was found guilty of plagiarism,

and her appeal was denied (Student).

Consequences continued…

“Paul Haugh was suspended from a

private high school for plagiarism”

(Standler).

High School notified colleges that admitted

student

Student sued and lost

Student had to pay attorney fees

Let’s check for understanding

Direct quote practice

This is a direct quote on page 3 from a book titled: Giants

of Jazz.

Studs Terkel wrote it in 1975 and Harper Collin published it.

Everybody in New Orleans loved the music of the brass

bands.

Now please write the correct citation for this quote – both in

text and works cited

Correct citation

In text:

“Everybody in New Orleans loved the music of the

brass bands” (Terkel 3).

In Works Cited:

Terkel, Studs. Giants of Jazz. New York: Harper

citation

Paraphrase practice

Here is a direct quote from Popular Culture and

American Live. Martin W. Laforse wrote the

book in1988, and it was published by Nelson-

Hall of Chicago.

“From these infant beginnings radio grew into the

dominant entertainment medium in the nation

during the early 1930s” (Laforse 17).

Now please paraphrase this statement and include

in text citation and works cited entry.

Correct paraphrasing and citations

Example of paraphrasing in text:

Radio became very important to people in

the 1930s. It was their main form of

entertainment (Laforse 17). (note: there are no

quotation marks) in-text citation
