What is a Wetland?

A wetland is where land and water meet and where almost 300 species of wildlife live for their survival like food, shelter, and water.

BOG – WHAT IS A BOG?

A bog has poor drainage, acidic soil and not many plants grow there. Lots of peat moss can be found there.

BOG VEGETATION

Low shrubs, tamarack and black spruce grow in bogs.

FEN – WHAT IS A FEN?

A fen is one of the four main types of wetlands. The water found in a fen comes from ground water or

surface water. This water is mineral rich and neutral.

WHAT IS A MARSH?

Marshes can be found at the edges of lakes and streams. They are often called sloughs. Cattails, rushes, and sedges grow there.

WHAT IS A POND?

Pond water comes from rain, snow, and groundwater. The water is usually about two meters deep or less. It may dry out in late summer.

WHAT IS A SWAMP?

They are forests that are flooded. They have slow moving water. They are not common in Alberta.
