Service Learning at St. James

• Purpose– Making a difference one village at a time– Leaving a legacy– Learning about other cultures and places– Living the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy“Thank you for sending me to St. James. I like St.

• History – Build a Boat - India – Rafiki - Kenya, Africa– Feed My Sheep - Chile– Helping Hands - La Oroya, Peru– Run the Race - West side of Columbus– A Kid Again! - Columbus, Ohio

• Homeless in El Salvador - Loseta House Building Projects– 1.2 million people in El Salvador are homeless– For every Loseta house built 100 more are needed– Each house cost $900.00 to build.

• St. Vincent De Paul Children’s Home– 160 students from infants to 16 years of age– Orphans because of gang warfare or natural disasters

Local Homelessness

• Franklin County Statistics– 8000 individuals experienced homelessness– Emergency Shelter System helped served over 5000– 1400-1700 of them were children– 2/3’s were 7years or younger– “Some cities’ response to rising homelessness is simply to build

more shelters, in Columbus, we rebuild lives.”– Prevention – Rapid Re-housing– Permanent Supportive Housing– Average rent per month in Franklin County– $30.00 contribution – goal of $300,000.00 – Ch. 10 update

Our Difference

• Loseta House Building Project– Teens – $8-10 a weekend– Over 2 years to earn enough for 1 house– Donations from outside resources– Ohio Dominican University missionaries
