Why do health consumers and health professionals engage in the use of social media, internet, and various technological devices?

Accessibility What consumers want?

When an individual develops signs and symptoms of an illness or medical condition, that person wants answers or an idea of what's going on right away.

The Internet and technology demonstrates:

Mobility, Efficiency, and Instant Answers through devices such as smart-phones, tablets, and computers.

Zoc DocZoc Doc is a website where patients can make appointments online. This website allows clients to filter their search by, insurance, medical specialty, availability, and gives a thorough background of each doctor (ZocDoc).

This also allows medical professionals to better advertise their medical services in a cost effective manner compared to billboard advertisement.

Healthcare Professionals

Healthcare professionals don’t know everything. LexiComp is website that serves as a medical encyclopedia for medical professionals and is able to help inform medical staff on health topics such as medications, side effects, disease process, etc.

Technological Education

Discharge Education When it comes to discharging patients, patients have the tendency to lose paperwork. Emailing patients their instructions gives patients the option of saving their instructions and printing it out for their use.

With technological education, video technology is a prime and benefical example of visual demonstration

For example- a patient using a Foley at home has the opportunity to watch videos at their own pace and can apply it to their knowledge.

Social Media 90% of health consumers use their peers recommendations when it comes to seeking medical advice (socialnomics).

Social Media is a source of reliable advertisement and it too can help health professionals advertise their services.

Social MediaSocial media allows for patients to come together as a “community” to relay health specific information and patient’s own experiences.

It is a pathway for patients to form support groups and assist one another in times of distress.
