Week 10

“Mathematics is as much an aspect of culture as it is a collection of algorithms.”

- Carl Boyer, 1949

The study of computer-mediated forms of production, distribution and communication, transformed into a cultural form.

To represent human experience, and their interaction with the world.

Numerical Representation

a digital image is a numeric representation of a scene or a two-dimensional surface.

The digital image that we see on the screen is actually a visual translation of those numeric codes, which are programmable.

Modularity

Automation

- Through automation human’s direct intervention can be, totally or partially, removed from the creative process

- This process is usually impossible to be done in old media.

“From the isolation of our workstations we try to interact with our surrounding environment, but the two worlds have little in common. How can we escape from the computer screen and bring these two worlds together?”

- Pierre Wellner

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with (or augmented by) virtual computer-generated imagery - creating a mixed reality. The augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements.

According to Lev Manovich, AR is overlaying dynamic data over the physical space. Within this space, that Manovich calls it ‘Augmented Space’, We can deliver information to user by tracking the user, whether in the present by monitoring her or in the future by anticipating her behavior. In another word, the delivery of information to users in augmented space, and the extraction of information about those users, are closely connected.

The Metaverse is a fictional virtual world where humans, represented by avatars, interact with each other and software agents, in a 3D environment that uses the metaphor of the real world.

- Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash

VR is an interactive experience in which humans are effectively immersed in a responsive virtual world, that is called cyberspace.
