go in the first half. Shew-maker then was fouled onanother 3 from the rightwing and made the freethrow to make it 26-24 with3:01 to go in the half.

“I thought we got in thereand were really attackingthem at the basket. Andthey missed some easyshots, too,” Irvine said.“They missed some at pointblank, and that helps, obvi-ously. It helps get our run-ning game going. And Ithought in transition wegave them a lot of troublethere.”

A putback and a stealand three-point play fromRobby Irgang pushed thelead back to 31-24, butBeckerson’s three-pointplay with 28 seconds left inthe half made it 31-27 athalftime.

A bucket from ZackIrvine and two free throwsfrom Beckerson cut WestJessamine’s lead to 35-33with 3:05 left in the third, but the Colts (18-12) wenton 16-0 over the rest of thethird quarter and into thefourth for a 51-33 lead.

“I thought they got moreaggressive on offense anddefense and kind of took usout of what we were want-ing to do,” he said. “We’vebeen going to the line 20, 25times a game and we only

had two in the first half and11 for the game. That does-n’t fit into our strength. Welike to attack the goal andget to the line, and wedidn’t do much of eitherone.

“Their inside game is realskilled. And they really shutus down.”

Burgin never got closerthan 16 points the rest ofthe way, finishing 17 for 37from the floor and 9 for 11at the free-throw line.

“Our defense in the thirdquarter did a good job ofnot giving them buckets. The first few minutes of thethird quarter, we were set-tling for 3s and not hittingthem,” West Jessaminecoach Damon Kelley said.“We’re normally a goodshooting team and I wantmy kids to have the confi-dence to shoot whenthey’re open because theyare good shooters. Theshots weren’t falling, so wefinally started attacking therim a little bit.”

Chase Fain led West Jes-samine with 14 points, andIrgang, DeShawn Eubanksand Daulton Peters eachscored 11. West finished 24for 57 from the field andmade 9 of 11 free throws.

Burgin was withoutMyles Hill, who injured hisankle in pregame warmupsand did not play. Irvine saidthat was a loss.

“Myles is our vocalleader, and puts a lot ofphysical play on it. He’s nota big points and reboundsguy, but he would lay abody on somebody, andthat’s one less we had andwe can’t hardly stand to dothat. And that made an im-pact on us I thought,” hesaid.

But Irvine said Tuesday’sloss would not take awayfrom what was a historicalseason for Burgin, whichhad its highest win totalsince 1941.

”It was a whole body ofwork,” he said. “We didn’texpect to win 20 games. Wedon’t expect to lose any ofthem, but we don’t expectto win 20, and that’s some-thing that hasn’t been donein years and years. Itdoesn’t really stand outuntil you read it in the pa-pers, that it’s been 71 yearssince it’s been done.”

e Jaguars were 13 for 27in the first half and finished26 for 59 from the field andmade 19 of 22 free throws.ey also had just fourturnovers in the first half, and 12 for the game.

“at’s just execution andbeing focused,” O’Bryansaid. “I liked our focus, Iliked our intensity, therewere a couple of momentswhere a couple of guys mayhave let up, but for the mostpart I thought they allbrought it the whole game. Ithought that was a greatteam effort.”

Collins scored sevenstraight points as East Jes-samine scored 15 of the first17 points of the third quarterfor a 47-15 lead. TimmyBradshaw’s 3-point thenmade it 50-21 going to thefourth quarter.

for 24, and it made 19 of 43shots for the game. e Ti-tans were 2 for 10 from 3-point range, 3 for 8 from thefree throw line and commit-ted 18 turnovers.

Britt said not being ableto run hurt his team.

“ey didn’t pressure usas much, and that elimi-nated the transition bas-kets,” Britt said. “ey’re oneof the most athletic teams inour region, and senior-dom-inated and very experi-enced.”

O’Bryan said the key wasnot letting Mercer get outand run.

“eir transition haskilled us the first two games, and we had to try and limitthat,” he said. “I think in thefirst half they only got one,and a couple in the secondhalf, and that was key, mak-ing sure we got back.”

e Titans return the bulkof their team next season, losing only seniors AustinHorn, Matthew Hamiltonand Nathan McGinnis, andBritt said this has been agreat season of learning.

“What we gained from itis we can’t step on the floor, just like any other team, andexpect to win,” he said. “Get-ting better happens in theoffseason, getting betterhappens over the summer. And there’s a lot of things wecan get better at.”

MERCER, from B1

“Once they hit two 3s back to back and we got down by double digits, we had to come awayfrom our game plan a little bit. And that led to forcing some things, getting some turnovers.”
