Three Failures Announced inWall Street This Morning
MARKET NOT DEMORALIZED
Pricking of the WebbMeyer BubbleCauses Suspension of Firms Handling
Business of Remarkable Syndicate
General Market Holds Up Well
NEW YORK May Stock Ex-
change firms were forced to suspend thismorning The failures were directly dueto the stock speculative enterprises of thesocalled WebbMeyer syndicate Exposure of the shadowy fabric upon whichthey were built caused fictitious prices toerumble away and those firms whichhandled the business of this remarkablesyndicate were forced to the wall despitedesperate efforts made to save them
The firms which suspended in the orcarof their announcement were as follows
Offenbach Moore 25 Broad StreetFirm Members Robert Offenbach andBenjamin P Moore This concern was organized in 1901 less than a year ago
Henry Bros Co 71 Broadway Firmmembers Howard W Henry Ambrose DHenry and William E Gordon An oldWall Street firm which announced a newcpparternership agreement in 1900 Priorto that time one of Its leading memberswas Frank Henry a wellknown NewYorker who was fatally attacked withapoplexy at the Racquet Club
iockwood Hurd Co 44 BroadwayFirm members Henry B LockwoodFrank H Hurd and Frank M Kelley Thisfirm was organized in 1807 and is themost important concern of the three Ittransacted a large commission businessand has elaborate offices
As the failures were expected the anouncements were not followed by stockmarket demoralization Tho marketopened heavy on expectation of the failur s and the belief that chances of a coalstrike were not so remote There weretwo 10 lot sales of Rutland preferred at96 This is of the WebbMeyer properties It was on the Broad Street Curbhowever the syndicate properties madea decidedly wretched showing There wasan absence of support in evidence thatplainly indicated a punctured bubble Asmost of the properties have a value thatis wholly surprising such serious de-clines were in no sense to be wondered at
This morning Dominion Securities Com-pany opened at 10 bid and 65 asked ascompared with 45 and 89 asked on Saturday Hackensack Meadows was 20 bid
decline of a points in bid price NorthAmerican Lumber and Pulp was offeredat 30 with no bid and Storage Power at4 bid a decline of one point But buy-ers were hard to find and no one
from the Offenbach Moore concern to protect their interests
Up to 11 oclock 5800 shares ofstocks were sold on the Stock Ex-
change under the rule for the account ofthe suspended firms Among these were100 shares of Rutland preferred at 85 Thepreceding regular sale of Rutland wasat 86 and the two regular sales immedi-ately following the sale under the rulewere 7 and 92 respectively

FIRE II BUFFALO
Big Grain ElevatorPinioning Firemen
BUFFALO May 5 irc destroyed theWells Elevator on Buffalo River earlythis morning The elevator was wellfilled with grain its total capacity being550000 bushels and this is an almost totalloss A conservative estimate places theentire loss at about 400060 It is saidthe structure and contents were fully in-
suredLieut John Hoclcle and Fireman John
Kennel were seriously injured shortlybefore 4 oclock when tha north wall ofthe elevator fell One of Kennels lungswas punctured and it is feared he willdie Hoelcle will recover
The two men were working with aboutfifty other firemen on Ohio Street a nar-row thoroughfare when without warningthe wall fell It Is the first time in thehistory of Buffalo elevator fires that aburning elevator has collapsed
The fact that only two men were in-
jured is almost a miracle Apparentlythere was no chance of escape for thehalf hundred who were withInthirty feet of the burning structure Behind them was a row of houses andstores The men escaped by dodging intothe areaways between these places Ken-nel was pinned down by heavy timbersa d was surrounded by flames Everyman who saw him jumped to the rescueThe flames were fought back by streamsof water while the firemen sawed andchopped away the timbers and releasedKennel It was a laming piece of workand the men were cheered to the echo
