The Nuremberg TrialsBegan on Nov. 20, 1946 (lasted 11 months)

• International military court set up by the Allies (U.S., Britain, USSR, and France)

• Top Nazis were put on trial publicly to make the world aware of their crimes and try to administer justice

The Charges

• CRIMES AGAINST PEACE: Count 1: Conspiracy to Wage Aggressive War (planning the war) & Count 2: Waging Aggressive War (carrying out the plan for war)

• WAR CRIMES: Count 3: doing things that violated the traditional “law” of war, such as bombing civilians, mistreatment of POWs, destroying property outside of military necessity

• CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY: Count 4: extermination/genocide: the Holocaust

20 Years in Prison

21 Major Nazi Criminals Faced These Charges

• 12 were sentenced to death

• 3 were acquitted

• The rest received prison sentences from 10 years to life

• There were other post-war trials held by the Allies, as well: But ultimately only a few hundred Nazis ever faced legal consequences for their role in the Holocaust.

All Pleaded “Not Guilty” (Said they were“Following Orders” or the Court had no authority to conduct these trials)
