The 70:20:10 Model for Workplace Learning
“With the rise and rise of social media, it’s almost inevitable that the ‘20’
will become more important as a channel for learning.”
Charles Jennings
• Human beings are social
• Most learning is informal
• Learning is personal
Why Social Learning?
Meet Susan
• Susan is a digital native• She spends most of her free time
online • She has just joined HCL as a
business analyst• She’s got some experience, but
has a lot more to learn
What does Susan need, to be successful in her
new role?
Let’s look at an ideal scenario
Susan logs in to ArKMedes…HCL’s very own platform for collaboration and social learning
Using keyword and tag based searching, she explores the hundreds of
available communities to find the ones that are suitable for her job
Through these communities, she finds colleagues in similar roles as hers
Susan is delighted to find that several of her colleagues
have been rewarded for participation and contribution
in the platform
… and wants to get
involved too
She starts by asking a few questions
Which are answered almost immediately by
colleagues from across the world
Susan is beginning
to grow her network
But realizes that she can do a lot more to leverage the resources available
She sets up her own Personal Learning Network
…and sets up alerts
so she can see any updates
relevant to her in her news feed
She adds her most active and informative colleagues to her PLN
And also adds the communities she is interested in
Every minute, she gets updated on her mobile
as to what is happening in her areas of interest
Next, she starts contributing to the platform by answering the queries of her colleagues
She makes a few podcasts from her own experiences
and shares them on the platform
…and is excited to see they are received very well amongst her colleagues
In fact, within minutes of uploading, one of her podcasts goes viral
She also starts blogging regularly to share her experiences on the job
Meanwhile, she volunteers to be on the communication team, to engage with customers, vendors
and industry on social media channels
And provides various suggestions for using social media for organizational activities
such as recruitment, marketing and business development
which are accepted and implemented
That year, Susan wins the
Employee of the Year award for her
innovation and contribution to the
organization
Is this possible?
In an organization where all stakeholders walk the social talk
