The new Volvo FMX is ready for the toughest of jobs. This truck stands up to heavy loads, poor roads and challenging inclines. Quite simply, a truck that enjoys the rough stuff. We already had the robust basis from the Volvo FM with its smooth and powerful driveline, sturdy chassis and comfortable cab. But we wanted to tailor it specifically for rough tasks. Said and done. We have further developed the cab and chassis and enhanced the truck with equipment and features that make it simply unbeatable in tough, demanding conditions.

Looks to match the power
The Volvo FMX has an entirely new front tailored for the
rough-and-tumble of construction operations. The sturdy front
towing device, for instance, is dimensioned for a towing
force of up to 25 tonnes.
When a truck is designed to withstand many years of hard
work, you have to be prepared for it to take a few knocks
on the way. That is why the Volvo FMX has been constructed
to take whatever comes – minor bumps and scrapes should
not result in expensive repairs. For instance, the sturdy bum-
per is made of three separate and individually replaceable
sections. Even the headlamp lenses are separate and can be
replaced individually.

This is a truck that really likes to work. Behind the wheel you’ll
appreciate the superb driving properties. A dependable and
steady flow of power uphill and massive braking power down-
hill evens out the gradients.
The engine’s power is available virtually from idling speed,
which ensures excellent starting traction. This power stays
with you throughout – maximum torque is available high up
the rev range.
From 330 to 500 horsepower
Two engine series with displacements of 11 and 13 litres and
a total of 14 power output classes from 330 to 500 horse-
power means there is always an engine to suit your transport
requirements. The engines meet emission standards from
Euro 3 to Euro 5.
Reliable and economical
The engines are built according to the classic Volvo design,
which means in-line six-cylinder diesel units with a turbo-
charger and intercooler. They feature modern technology
with a one-piece cylinder head, overhead camshaft, four valves
per cylinder and electronically controlled unit injectors. Up-
graded and refined Volvo Engine Management System (EMS)
with precisely regulated combustion guarantees fuel
economy.
VEB+ delivers extremely high braking effect
Volvo’s patented engine brakes, Volvo Engine Brake (VEB)
and the further-enhanced VEB+, are custom-made for heavy
construction duties. You get high braking effect even at low
speeds, which means that most of the braking work can
actually be handled by VEB/VEB+.
What is more, all the transmissions can be equipped with
a hydraulic retarder if you require even more braking power.

Always the right gear with I-Shift
You’ll have to look hard for a gearbox that is faster and easier
to use. With the auto-changing I-Shift transmission you are
free to concentrate fully on your driving. Its 12 forward gears
make I-Shift extremely fuel-efficient. And if you still want to
change gear manually, you can do that too.
I-Shift for construction duties
By supplementing I-Shift with a program package for con-
struction duties, the ease of use and efficiency are boosted
even further. The program package contains functions that make
for easier manoeuvring when pulling away and easier driving
at slow speeds. You get maximum torque when you need it,
while avoiding unnecessary gear changes in hilly terrain.
Smooth manual gear changes
Choose between a 9-speed range-change gearbox and a
14-speed splitter range-change gearbox, with or without
overdrive. Volvo’s manual gearboxes are easy shifters. Servo
synchromesh and cable linkage mean a vibration-free gear
lever and slick gear changes.
The wide ratio span gives high starting traction while
simultaneously ensuring that there are ample resources for
high average speeds.
Powertronic with torque converter
The Powertronic fully automatic 6-speed planetary trans-
mission changes gear smoothly and without any disruption
in power delivery. The built-in torque converter amplifies the
power and guarantees smooth and secure starts even in
difficult conditions.

Without a doubt you will find a drive configuration to suit your
every need. The Volvo FMX is available with seven different
drive configurations: 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2, 8x4, 4x4 and 6x6.
Volvo’s rear axles are dimensioned for high engine torque,
high axle loads and high combination weights. Robust rear
axle casings cast in nodular iron are built to withstand heavy
usage. Choose between solo and tandem axles, with single
or hub reduction.
Differential lock fitted as standard
All the rear axles can be specified with a wide range of
ratios, both to ensure secure starting and hill-climbing ability
and to match the engine’s economy range at cruising speed.
A differential lock that enhances grip when the road surface
is wet and slippery is fitted as standard. Tandem axles also
feature a differential lock between the axles.
All-wheel drive for the toughest of conditions
Volvo FMX models with 4x4 and 6x6 all-wheel drive are
designed for demanding off-road transport operations. The
front axle has both high ground clearance and a generous
steering angle, which means that the vehicle is easy to
manoeuvre even in extremely hilly terrain.
Power take-offs with high power outputs
Power take-offs are available for most applications: engine-
driven and gearbox-driven, high-revving and low-revving,
with connecting flange and with propshaft drive. Engine-
driven power take-offs permit outputs as high as 1000 Nm.

It’s always about maximising your payload. And it all begins with a wide,
parallel and uniformly high frame that provides a stable backbone on
which to build. The chassis layout is standardised to assist bodybuilding
in every respect.
Perfect basis for bodybuilding
The Volvo FMX is available in four chassis heights, from 900 to 1240 mm.
Together with the wide range of wheelbases, drive configurations and
suspension alternatives, you have considerable scope for individually tailor-
ing the perfect cargo carrier for your operations. Chassis packaging is
flexible and modular in design, offering plenty of scope for customised
positioning of the battery and fuel tanks, for instance. What is more, the
bodybuilder is given a useful helping hand in the form of Volvo’s body-
building instructions, making installation far easier.
Large volume and long operating time
The flexible location of the fuel tanks makes it is possible to carry large
amounts of fuel. Steel fuel tanks are available from 330 to 570 litres. High
tank location ensures good ground clearance even in rough conditions.
High ground clearance and generous approach angle
Front axles are available in a choice of several heights, each dimensioned
for different axle loads. If you choose a high chassis and straight front
axle for your Volvo FMX, you get a chassis with extremely high ground
clearance and a generous approach angle. Dual front axles are intended
for the heaviest of transport duties or for trucks with heavy load-handling
equipment installed behind the cab.
Manoeuvrable and easy to drive
Generous steering angles means these trucks are easy to manoeuvre
even in congested areas. They are comfortable to drive even at low speeds
since servo assistance varies with road speed.

Capacity to handle the
heaviest gross weights
Robust components built for the job. The Volvo FMX is avail-
able with a wide range of suspension systems and bogie
alternatives. You can choose between conventional leaf
springs and parabolic springs. Most bogies are suitable for
both single reduction and hub reduction.
Fast-acting EBS disc brakes
Volvo’s EBS disc brakes are characterised by high braking
effect combined with heat-resistant disc installation. Thanks
to electronic control, the system responds very quickly,
resulting in a short stopping distance.
Disc brakes are also available in combination with multi leaf
versions of the rear suspensions which are suitable for heavy
construction duties. The braking system range also includes
dependable Volvo Z-cam drum brakes with ABS.
Functions to prevent accidents
EBS comes with a total of about 20 functions that improve
safety and traction. “Diff Lock Synchro” and “Diff Lock
Control” automatically synchronise the driven wheels and
activate the differential lock at low speeds. “Hill Start Aid”
assists starts on uphill gradients. The brakes do not disengage
until the engine provides sufficient torque for propulsion or
the clutch pedal is released.
ESP brake stabilisation
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is included in Electronic
Brake System High (EBS) on all tractors. ESP provides more
stable braking with the possibility of individual redistribution
of braking force between the axles and wheels. The system
responds very swiftly. The control unit continuously receives
data from a large number of sensors and reassesses the
driving situation several times per second.

The more you like being behind the wheel, the better you’ll
drive. This simple approach was the basis to the design of our
FMX cabs. Form and function go hand in hand. Every single
detail is designed to offer you maximum comfort and safety.
The driver’s choice
You can choose between a day cab, sleeper cab and Globe-
trotter cab. All are well-insulated and quiet, renowned for
their high standards of interior climate, heating/cooling and
ventilation. The cabs feature four-point suspension and they
are equipped with dampers and coil springs or air suspen-
sion. The door opens through a generous 90 degrees, and
the steering wheel can be pushed forward out of the way,
making entry even easier. The foot-steps are illuminated and
there are sturdy grab rails on both sides. A retractable lower
foot-step is available as an option. The robust rubber floor
mats feature high edges to keep the dirt in place. And last
but not least, the audio system is something truly special.
Sit comfortably with a perfect overview
The instrument panel is gently curved and all the controls
are positioned within easy reach. Right in front of you is an
easy to read combined instrument with a large black and
white display featuring high-resolution graphics.
The driver’s seat with firm padding provides generous
support. Several upholstery variants, from durable vinyl to
exclusive leather are available from the options list. A seat
that compensates for the driver’s body weight, and heating
and ventilation in the seat cushion and back-rest are other
options.
Plenty of storage space
Smart storage with several convenient compartments, docu-
ment pockets and cupholders. The front shelf in the Globe-
trotter with its uplighting helps create a feeling of space
inside the cab. Two large storage compartments with roller
doors on the driver’s and passenger’s sides. DIN (Deutsche
Industrie Norm) standard slots for radio and tachograph are
included.

Volvo’s safety cab is regarded as the safest workplace in
the truck world. The cab is made of high-strength steel, with
the frame forming a robust safety cage. Volvo FMX cabs
complies with the stringent Swedish impact tests as well as
our very own barrier collision test, which simulates a collision
with another truck.
Safety as a core value
Cab safety also includes the protective interior with its
impact-absorbing instrument panel, collapsible pedals, safety
steering wheel and safety belts. Volvo’s FUPS (Front Under-
run Protection System) protects other road users. FUPS is
fitted as standard on most chassis heights.
Safety belt integrated into the seat as an option
The upper attachment point for the safety belt is located in
the seat’s backrest instead of in the cab wall. As a result, the
belt is always correctly positioned against the driver’s body
irrespective of seat adjustment. This is particularly useful
when driving over rough terrain. The Volvo FMX is also avail-
able with an optional airbag.
Active safety to avoid accidents
The Lane Changing Support (LCS) system keeps watch in
the offset rear blind spot on the passenger’s side which is
not covered by the rear-view mirrors. When the driver activa-
tes the turn indicators and intends to change lanes, the LCS
system’s radar checks whether there are any vehicles within
the blind spot. If there are, the driver is alerted by a warning
light. This feature is optional.
Cab packages to further enhance comfort
The Volvo FMX is available with a number of cab packages
offering functions and components that increase comfort
and safety even more. Bringing all these features together
into a single package makes it easier to order the specifica-
tion of your choice. What is more, it is cheaper to order a
package than it is to order each item separately.
