Prepare to Serve, Wyoming: A Tribute to All Heroes
The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups, who worked to establish the charitable service day as a forward-looking way to honor 9/11 victims, survivors, and others who rose up in service in response to the attacks.
Paying TributeOn the anniversary of the September
11th attacks, Americans will unite in service in the same remarkable way that so many came together following the attacks.
As in years past, there will be opportunities across the nation for hundreds of thousands of volunteers to paint and refurbish homes, run food drives, spruce up schools, reclaim neighborhoods, and support and honor veterans, soldiers, military families, and first responders.
As our state’s Commission for Service and Volunteerism, ServeWyoming’s mission is to improve lives and strengthen Wyoming communities through volunteerism. We want to support volunteer efforts in our state, and encourage a call to action in honor of our Heroes.
serveWyoming encourages you to serve or support a cause on 9/11 as a way of paying tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11.
Here are some ways to get started:
• Participate in our 9/11 Tribute Project “Honoring our Fallen Heroes – Donating Blood.” Wednesday, September 11th, 10 – 6pm at United Blood Services’ new Casper location, 2801 East 2nd Street. serveWyoming and AARP Wyoming have joined forces with United Blood Services of Wyoming to provide an opportunity to give life by donating blood. In addition, participants will be given a flag to place at oregon Trail Wyoming states Veterans Cemetery in Casper as part of the Natrona County United Veterans Council’s remembrance ceremony honoring first responders. Community members are welcome to drop in and donate, but interested participants are encouraged to make an appointment by contacting Jessica stanbury at our ServeWyoming office, (307) 234-3428, Jessica@servewyoming.org or by calling United Blood Services at (307) 237-2328.
• Search for opportunities on www.servewyoming.org and click on “Volunteer Now.”
• Share your story of service on the ServeWyoming Facebook wall.
• Choose a volunteer opportunity from this Guide in honor and remembrance of the sacrifice of those who were lost twelve years ago.

Wyoming Volunteers Give Back
Volunteers are an integral part of the Wyoming community, providing a valuable service to our neighborhoods, schools, health facilities, and community organizations. by generously donating their time and talents to people or organization/projects in need, volunteers positively impact the quality of life of others and strengthen our community. Whether educating children, aiding the ill, enriching culture, protecting the environment, or feeding the hungry, your favorite organization needs your help.
Wyoming volunteers make a positive difference in communities all around the State. According to the latest data from the Corporation for National and Community Service, more than 126,800 Wyoming residents reported serving 15.7 million hours of service for a nonprofit or community organization in 2011. This translates to more than $341 million in value to communities and organizations throughout Wyoming.
In 2007, serveWyoming launched a program designed to connect potential volunteers with organizations across our state, and to measurably increase the number and effectiveness of volunteers. We call this program Volunteer Wyoming. The online matching database, www.volunteerwyoming.org has been a vital part of the program and in the summer of 2012 we upgraded the system to have a cleaner, more user friendly interface, making it easier to use
for volunteers, corporate partners and nonprofit organizations.
Interested in signing up as a volunteer or organization? Go to www.servewyoming.org, click on “Volunteer Now!” and select if you are an individual or an organization. Fill in the information fields and you will be on your way to a great volunteer connection!
As our state’s governor-appointed commission for service and volunteerism, serveWyoming strives to build a culture of citizenship, service and responsibility in Wyoming. It is our mission to improve lives and strengthen Wyoming communities through volunteerism. ServeWyoming promotes volunteering and service as a means to strengthen communities through days of service, special initiatives, and community partnerships. As a result
of the Volunteer Wyoming program, in 2012 we mobilized more than 10,000 people who reported serving 14,653 hours. These volunteers contributed $336,003 in value to our state. We also address community needs by administering AmeriCorps*state funding that allows AmeriCorps members to serve in nonprofit, community-based and educational organizations throughout Wyoming.
Please consider volunteering or increasing your commitment to community service. The rewards are immediate, lasting, and deeply appreciated. You can personally visit the Casper area Volunteer Center in the ServeWyoming office at: 229 East 2nd street, suite 203 (above Eggingtons), call us at (307) 234-3428 or go to www.servewyoming.org and click on “Volunteer Now!”

Volunteering is at the Heart of AARP Wyoming
AmeriCorps Celebrates 20 Years!
In 1947, when Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of AARP, said the objective is “To serve, not to be served,” she built the foundation of what AARP is all about in one breath; Volunteers. And through Dr. Andrus’ own work, she showed how the power of one person with leadership, passion, and vision can impact many lives. Volunteers are the lifeblood of what we do at a state and local level. Without them we could not accomplish what we do. Their efforts include:
Community Contacts: Volunteers are the crucial AARP link to our communities. They share with AARP what the major issues and concerns that they are hearing from their peers (working or retired) in their own communities. The volunteers build relationships in their communities and develop the partnerships that help AARP insure we are meeting the needs of the 50 plus population. They often help with educational forums such as recruiting local presenters
for the AARP Gray Matters, brain health workshops or small business mentoring. These types of events provide Wyoming’s 50 plus population the opportunity to learn and receive guidance on topics they consider to be a priority.
Government Relations Team: Volunteers from across the state work with Wyoming legislators on a variety of issues that impact Wyoming’s 50 plus residents and consumers. Before and during legislative sessions, volunteers contact their legislators in person, by phone or by email to discuss key issues. In coordination with the AARP Wyoming Office, volunteer advocates lobby, place letters to the editor, provide media interviews or share information with their community networks.
Utility Team volunteers: Utility rate adjustments can make or break a monthly budget for many people, but especially those who are retired and living on a fixed income. With
AARP Wyoming state office support, utility team volunteers monitor local utility rate cases and advocate/testify at local hearings and meetings on behalf of residential utility consumers.
AARP Driver Safety instructors: These volunteers provide driver safety classes to individuals who are 55 plus and epitomize the hands-on volunteer community service AARP is known for. Volunteer instructors help drivers improve their driving skills and stay safe on the road. Upon completion of the class, Driver Safety participants are eligible to receive a discount on their auto insurance.
AARP Foundation Tax Aide: Volunteers help people in their communities with income tax preparation. It’s a free and individualized service for people 60 or older who live on lower fixed incomes.
AARP’s annual Day of Service is the day for staff and volunteers
to give their time for their local communities. They pay tribute to fallen heroes by participating in community events like the Casper 9/11 Tribute Project “Honoring our Fallen Heroes.” AARP Wyoming joined forces with ServeWyoming and United Blood Services of Wyoming to host this event.
If you are interested in the volunteer opportunities described above, please contact the AARP Wyoming Office in Cheyenne toll-free at: 1-866-663-3290 or visit www.aarp.org/wy.
Every day in communities across America, including WYOMING, AmeriCorps members are making a powerful impact on the most critical issues facing our nation.
since its inception, more than
820,000 men and women have taken the AmeriCorps pledge, serving more than one billion hours and improving the lives of countless Americans.
Starting in September 2013, we
will recognize the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums and highlight the extraordinary impact AmeriCorps has made for 20 years. For more information visit www.nationalservice.gov.

The Wyoming Inclusion team is made up of members dedicated to creating a brighter future for people with disabilities, where they are fully and meaningfully included as citizens, volunteers, employees and leaders in a variety of positions in Wyoming. We are committed to encouraging and
empowering non-profit organizations to foster a culture of inclusiveness so that members of our communities with disabilities improve their quality of life.
The Inclusion team recently concluded survey’s for volunteers and non-profit organizations. Information collected from these two surveys will provide the Wyoming non-profits with information, analysis, and feedback from volunteers with and without disabilities, about the overall inclusion climate in Wyoming. We will also use this information to inform the Wyoming Inclusion team of ways in which we may be able to provide resources to Wyoming nonprofits to help strengthen inclusive practices, including training and technical assistance, peer mentoring and future collaboration. The report will soon be available on our website, www.servewyoming.org!
We are also looking for new team members. If you are interested in being part of our group or would like more information, please contact Nurieh at nurieh@servewyoming.org or 307-234-3428.
Community members seeking a fulfilling and rewarding volunteer opportunity should consider joining the Wyoming Medical Center Volunteers. There are 15 different areas in which volunteers provide services, ranging from working in the volunteer-owned-and-operated Cottage Gift Shop to escorting patients and visitors throughout the hospital.
Volunteers who maintain the library cart deliver magazines and books to patients and family members to enjoy during their stay. The “Say It With Flowers” volunteers bring flowers from local florists and the gift shop directly to patients. Everyone is especially delighted when one of these volunteers arrives at their room.
The benefits of becoming a WMC volunteer are many. Some of the tangible benefits include a free yearly flu vaccination, discounts on cafeteria items, free Starbucks coffee from the cafeteria
while volunteering, a 20 percent birthday discount at the Cottage Gift Shop, discounts at the WMC pharmacy, and an annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon.
Dedicating your time as a volunteer also has many personal benefits such as helping you make new friends, boosting your social skills, connecting to your community, enhancing feelings of usefulness and productivity, increasing self confidence, and helping you stay physically and mentally healthy.
To get started, interested individuals must be at least 16 years old and complete a membership application. For more information, visit our website at www.WyomingMedicalCenter.org and click on the “About Us” tab or call Jillian Riddle, Volunteer Coordinator, at 307-577-4355.

Companies often donate capital to worthy causes. But sometimes the most effective contribution is human capital.
That is why a number of companies, including Central Wyoming Property Inspections, are mobilizing their employees for charitable campaigns. Workers volunteer to fix schools, build parks and tutor at neighborhood centers. Not only do these employee programs help the community, but they also boost office morale as employees work together for the common good.
“We have great employees and family members who love to volunteer,” says Toby Peter, owner and manager at Central Wyoming Property Inspections. “They are gung ho.” About 89% of companies have a formal
employee volunteer program, according to a recent survey by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. The report found that the competition to attract and retain talented employees encourages companies to offer employee volunteer programs.
Employee volunteerism offers a tangible way for businesses to
become more personally invested in tackling social problems, to strengthen employee skills and
morale, and to cultivate a more
positive and productive business environment.
“our business is home inspections . . . when we complete a service event and volunteer, we all walk away feeling good! It’s just the right thing to do for the community that has helped our business flourish,” says Toby Peter.

serveWyoming Awards AmeriCorps Funding
ServeWyoming recently awarded over $800,000.00 in AmeriCorps funding, from the Corporation for National and Community service, to nonprofit organizations across Wyoming. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Wyoming, Greater Wyoming big brothers big sisters, Teton Science Schools, The University of Wyoming-Wyoming Conservation Corps, and the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will begin their 2013-2014 AmeriCorps programs with the help of federal funding, leveraged by local, state, and private funding.
Each year, various Wyoming organizations apply for the AmeriCorps grant through serveWyoming in order to recruit people, of all abilities, to join AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps is an opportunity for citizens to make a big difference in their own lives as well as in the lives of those in their community and across the nation. As a member of AmeriCorps, individuals apply their skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical community needs.
This year nearly 300 Wyoming AmeriCorps*State members will provide service to and expand the capacity of organizations for which they serve. They often also open the door to stronger partnerships. During the 2012-2013 funding year, the Teton science schools AmeriCorps program partnered with The Children’s Museum of Jackson Hole
to create a new hands-on dinosaur exhibit.
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. In addition to AmeriCorps, the Corporation also administers senior Corps, VISTA, and the National Civilian Community Corps. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.
serveWyoming’s mission is “Improving lives and strengthening Wyoming communities through volunteerism.” As a statewide nonprofit, not only does serveWyoming accomplish our mission by providing funding and connecting citizens of all ages and abilities to volunteer opportunities, through AmeriCorps and www.volunteerwyoming.org, serveWyoming supports Wyoming’s nonprofit infrastructure.

“ServeWyoming has been a partner with the Casper-Natrona County Health Department for 4+ years now. We have worked together to write our disaster volunteer management plan, and went further than we ever thought possible with the creation of a Volunteer Reception Center, a way to assign spontaneous volunteers to appropriate locations and jobs in a disaster. We recently exercised the plan, and it was an overwhelming success! Without the commitment and assistance of ServeWyoming, we would not be able to help our community be as prepared as it now is.”

Spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers who show up at disaster sites, though well-meaning, can slow down the response process and place themselves and others at risk.
The pre-registration of potential volunteers enhances your community’s ability to mobilize appropriate emergency response volunteers as needed to assist with an emergency response. By pre-registering with ServeWyoming, Natrona County residents will be prepared to use their valuable skills, talents and experiences when and where they are needed most.
