Visible light TiO2 photocatalysts assessment for airdecontamination

Different visible light responses of commercial TiO2 photocatalysts are assessed for their
application in air decontamination. To do that the modified TiO2 catalysts were immobi-
lized on borosilicate glass plates according to a dip coating method. Then, the photocatalytic
performance of these plates was evaluated in a continuous gas flat plate photoreactor irra-
diated with visible light lamps using two representative air pollutants: nitrogen oxide and
acetaldehyde. Working under visible light, the modified TiO2 catalysts were compared by
means of efficiency parameters: the true quantum efficiency, which relates the moles of
degraded pollutant with the moles of the absorbed photons, and the apparent photonic
efficiency, which relates the moles of degraded pollutant with the moles of incident pho-
tons. Also, the photocatalytic pollutants degradation by immobilized modified TiO2 could be
related with their optical properties, finding a clear correlation between them. These results
are useful to decide which TiO2 will be more efficient for a full scale air decontamination

1. Introduction
Heterogeneous photocatalysis represents an emerging envi-ronmental control option for the efficient removal of chemicalpollutants that can be applied for water and air purification(Hoffmann et al., 1995). One of the limitations of this technol-ogy is that normal TiO2 can only be activated by UV radiation(280–400 nm) that represents 4% of the total energy of thesun; meanwhile the visible light constitutes 45% of the solarradiation. On the other hand, the UV radiation amounts toonly 0.001–0.05 W/m2 in indoor lighting (Kuo et al., 2007). Toextend the use of photocatalysis to visible light region, it isnecessary to prolong TiO2 radiation absorption to wavelengths

modification methods of photocatalyst to amplify its absorp-tion spectrum to visible radiation have been investigatedand therefore, the applicability of heterogeneous photocata-lysis has been extended (Banerjee et al., 2014; Chatterjee andDasgupta, 2005; Daghrir et al., 2013; Kisch and Macyk, 2002).Several commercial types of modified TiO2 can be alreadyfound in the market for indoor visible light applications.
There are various types of modified TiO2 active under vis-ible light and different methods to perform the modificationprocess. A first method is the treatment of TiO2 with reduc-tive hydrogen plasma (Van Durme et al., 2007). TiO2 can also besensitized by adsorbed dyes and semiconductors having lower

ransition metals such as Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, Cr, V, Mn, Mo, Nb, W,u, Pt and Au (He et al., 2010). Finally, an alternative approach
s the doping with non-metal anions, like nitrogen (Jo andhin, 2010), carbon (Kuo et al., 2007) or sulphur (Nishijimat al., 2007).
In many studies employing modified TiO2 with visible lightbsorption, the photocatalytic degradation of several volatilerganic compounds (VOCs) and inorganic gases has been stud-
ed: nitrogen oxides (Yu and Brouwers, 2009; Lin et al., 2006;akamura et al., 2000), 2-propanol (Ihara et al., 2001), toluene
Fuerte et al., 2001; Ihara et al., 2001; Kubacka et al., 2009;an Durme et al., 2007), acetaldehyde (Asahi et al., 2001;
ketani et al., 2004; Nishijima et al., 2007; Sakthivel and Kisch,003a, 2003b), acetone (Ihara et al., 2003), benzene (Sakthivelnd Kisch, 2003a,b), carbon monoxide (Sakthivel and Kisch,003a,b), trichloroethylene (Demeestere et al., 2005; Jo andang, 2010), dimethyl sulfide (Demeestere et al., 2005) andimethyl disulphide (Jo and Shin, 2010), methyl-tertiary butylther (Jo and Yang, 2010), acetic acid (Nishijima et al., 2007),nd formic acid (Nishijima et al., 2007).
In the present work, different visible light absorption TiO2
ommercially available catalysts, one doped with carbon,nother doped with nitrogen and two photocatalytic solu-ions ready to use, are studied. The carbon doping introducesew states close to the valence band edge of TiO2 narrow-
ng the photocatalyst band gap. In addition, carbonaceouspecies at the surface of the photocatalyst facilitates thebsorption in the visible wavelengths as well as the highurface area of the doped TiO2 promotes the adsorption ofollutants. Nitrogen doped titania could have either substi-utional or interstitial N atoms in the TiO2 matrix, resultingn a visible light response due to the electron transition fromhe localized N orbital to the conduction band or to the sur-ace adsorbed O2. One of the employed solutions is madef silver modified TiO2. The noble metal doping increaseshe separation of photogenerated charge carries and reduceshe recombination rate of photoinduced electron–holeair.
Two representative air pollutants are employed to assesshe photocatalytic performance under visible light of the
odified TiO2 mentioned above: (i) NO as an inorganic con-aminant and (ii) acetaldehyde as a simple structured organicollutant. The nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the generic term for
group of highly reactive gases, most of them emitted to airn the form of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).hey are mainly formed in combustion processes and cause
wide variety of health and environmental impacts. The NOx
ompounds are responsible for tropospheric ozone and urban

Furthermore, NOx together with SOx (sulfur dioxide andsulfur trioxide) is the major contributor to the “acid rain”.On the other hand, acetaldehyde is one of toxic, irritant, andprobable carcinogen VOC contaminant in indoor and outdoorenvironments. It is also a result of: (i) combustion processes,such as vehicle exhaust, tobacco smoke, and wood burning,and (ii) sources in homes including building materials, likelaminate, linoleum, wooden varnished, and cork/pine floor-ing, plastic water based and matt emulsions paints, wooden,particleboard, plywood and chipboard furniture (Missia et al.,2010).
The photocatalysts were immobilized on borosilicate glassplates according to a dip coating method. The optical prop-erties of the immobilized samples were determined in orderto correlate the visible light absorption with the de-pollutingcapability. The performance of these systems was evaluatedcalculating the photonic and the quantum efficiencies, thatcorrelate the contaminant reaction rate with the incidentradiation flux and the absorbed radiation by the catalysts,respectively. The main objective of this work is to determinewhich photocatalyst will present the best pollution abatingability in a full scale application under visible light conditions.
2. Experimental
2.1. Sample preparation
Four types of visible light photocatalysts were acquired fromthe marked: a powder doped with carbon, a powder dopedwith nitrogen and two liquid solutions ready to use forcoatings. The measured BET area for the Carbon and Nitrogendoped TiO2 powders were 251 m2 g−1 and 34 m2 g−1 respec-tively.
The immobilization of the TiO2 powders and liquid suspen-sions was carried out according to a dip coating procedure onborosilicate glass plates. The TiO2 powders load in deionizedwater to prepare the coating was 75 g L−1. For every dip coatingcycle, the glass piece was dried at 110 ◦C for 24 h and calcinedat 500 ◦C for 2 h, repeating this procedure four times. Addi-tionally, in order to increase the adhesion between the TiO2
particles and glass, especially for employing the carbon dopedcatalyst, some plates were sandblasted. On the other hand, asthe TiO2 suspensions at natural pH precipitate quite fast, dif-ferent suspensions at different pHs adjusted with nitric acidand sodium hydroxide were prepared, finding that the sus-pension at pH 1 for both TiO2 powders were the most stable.Table 1 summarizes all prepared sample and the correspond-

In order to assess the stability of the prepared samples,the coatings made with TiO2-C and TiO2-N were flushed withwater, observing only a mass decreased of the films on thesmooth glasses.
2.2. Optical properties
The optical properties of the immobilized TiO2 on the glassplate were determined as a function of wavelength between300 and 600 nm in an Optronic OL Series 750 spectroradiome-ter equipped with an OL 740-70 integrating sphere reflectanceattachment coated with polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE). To eval-uate the fraction of energy absorbed (A) by the TiO2 film, thespectral diffuse reflectance and the spectral diffuse transmit-tance of the coated glass were experimentally determinedaccording to the schematic representation made in Fig. 1(Zacarías et al., 2012).
2.3. Photocatalytic performance
The photocatalytic performance of the prepared sampleswas studied with the degradation of two air contaminants,one inorganic and another one organic, in to some extentquite similar experimental setups. Some operating condi-
tions stated in the ISO standards 22197-1 and 22197-2 (ISO,2007, 2011) for nitrogen oxide and acetaldehyde degradationreflectance measurement. (b) Diffuse transmittancemeasurement.

Inlet pollutant concentration
espectively were followed. For the degradation of the inor-anic compound (nitrogen oxide), the applied experimentalevice is composed of a planar reactor cell housing the photo-atalytic plate sample, a suitable visible light source, an onlinehemiluminescent NOx analyzer and an appropriate gas sup-ly (Fig. 2(a)) (Ballari et al., 2010). The chemiluminescenceethod uses the reaction of NO with O3 generating excitedO2* molecules that return to the ground state emitting
hemiluminescence in the range of 600–3000 nm. The lightntensity is proportional to the concentration of NO molecules.n the other hand, a deoxidation converter changes the NO2
o NO, which is then measured. In other words, the NO2 con-entration can be obtained by the difference between: (i) theOx (NO + NO2) concentration measured when the sample gas
s directed through a converter and (ii) the NO concentrationeasured when the gas is not run through the converter.For the degradation of the organic pollutant (acetaldehyde)
continuous planar photoreactor with similar dimensionso the previous one was also employed, with the differ-nce that here the glass pieces with the immobilized TiO2
ere irradiated on both sides of the photoreactor to improvehe photocatalytic degradation of the pollutant. The photo-atalytic reactor was fed by acetaldehyde gas stabilized initrogen and irradiated with fluorescence visible light lamps
Fig. 2(b)). The outlet and inlet contaminant concentrationrom the reactor was analyzed employing a gas chromato-raph with a FID detector performing a direct injection of theas sample.
Table 2 shows the main characteristics, dimensions andperating conditions of the experimental setup that weremployed to carry out the NO and acetaldehyde photocatalyticegradation experiments.
. Results and discussion
.1. Optical properties
he results of the diffuse transmittance and reflectance mea-urements of the prepared samples on the smooth glassesTTiO2,g,TiO2
and RTiO2,g,TiO2respectively) can be found in Fig. 3.
ig. 4 shows the optical measurements for the sandblastedamples for 1 and 4 layers.
The radiation absorption fraction (A) of the immobilizedhotocatalyst can be calculated from the measured values
f diffuse reflectance (R) and diffuse transmittance (T) of theorosilicate glass alone and coated with TiO2 on both sides.To do that, a radiative flux balance is applied in each layer ofFig. 5 according to (Edwards, 1977; Siegel and Howell, 2002):

The calculated absorption fraction for the different testedsamples together with the spectral emission distribution ofthe employed lamps can be found in Figs. 6 and 7 for thecoatings on the smooth and sandblasting glasses respectively.
As it can be observed in Fig. 6, the fraction of energyabsorbed by the commercial photocatalytic solutions is signif-icantly lower than the TiO2 powders absorption. On the otherhand, the TiO2 doped with carbon and 4 layers presents betterradiation absorption on both smooth (Fig. 6) and sandblasted(Fig. 7) glasses. However, comparing the results in Figs. 6 and 7for TiO2-C and TiO2-N samples and 4 layers, the sandblast-ing samples prepared with a TiO2 suspension at pH equal to1 present a significantly lower radiation absorption capabilitythan the samples prepared on smooth glass with a natural pHsuspension. This last is due to the TiO2 suspension prepared atpH 1 presents smaller particle agglomerates and a less amountof catalyst deposited on the sandblasted glass (see Table 1).
In average, the TiO2-C absorbed 32% and 20% more radia-
immobilized TiO2 on smooth glass and the spectralemission distribution of the Philips lamps.

mission distribution of the GE lamps.
.2. Nitrogen oxide degradation
he photocatalytic oxidation of NOx mixtures is reported ineveral publications (Devahasdin et al., 2003; Shelimov et al.,008; Wang et al., 2007). All of them proposed the NO decom-osition to NO2, and then NO2 to HNO3 through the hydroxyladical attack generated during the photocatalyst activationtage. For the reacting system applied here, fed with NO, NO2
eneration was observed as a reaction intermediate. As aesult, the NOx (NO + NO2) concentration is higher than theO concentration at the reactor outlet.
The NO and NOx conversions for all samples on smoothlasses are reported in Table 3 and calculated according to:

here i indicates NO or NOx (NO + NO2), and Cin and Cout arehe reactor inlet and outlet concentration, respectively.
The samples prepared with the two commercial photocat-lytic solutions did not show a significant NOx reduction (lesshan 2%). So, these samples were not considered for furthernalysis.
Fig. 8 shows the total NOx and NO concentration duringhe test for the carbon and nitrogen doped TiO2 immobilizedn the smooth glasses. Clearly, the carbon doped TiO2 hashown a better photocatalytic performance for the NOx degra-ation than the nitrogen doped TiO2 powder. Meanwhile theotal NOx conversion by the TiO2-C was about 18%, the TiO2-Nresented only 6% of NOx degradation (Table 3).
In Table 4, three parameters related with the photocatalyticerformance of the samples are reported. The first one is theverage reaction rate in the photoreactor, calculated as:

where Q is the gas flow rate in the photoreactor and Aint is thecatalytic interfacial area. The calculated average reaction ratecan be assumed free of external and internal mass transportlimitations according to Appendix B.
The second parameter, the apparent photonic efficiency,is calculated as (Imoberdorf et al., 2007; Passalía et al., 2013;Munoz Batista et al., 2014):

alytic wall expressed in Einstein m−2 s−1.Finally, in order to incorporate the effect of the effectively
absorbed radiation by the catalyst, the true quantum efficiencyis calculated according to Eq. (11) (Imoberdorf et al., 2007;Passalía et al., 2013; Munoz Batista et al., 2014) and summa-rized in Table 4.

The values of the parameters reported in Table 4 followthe same trend than the NO and NOx conversion reported inTable 3 for both samples. However, the difference between thequantum efficiencies of TiO2-N and TiO2-C samples is clearlyless important since the TiO2-N catalyst absorbs less radiationthan the TiO2-C. Meanwhile the NOx conversion, reaction rateand photonic efficiency for the TiO2-N sample are about 70%lower than the TiO2-C ones, the quantum efficiency is only50% lower.
3.3. Acetaldehyde degradation
The global reaction pathway of the acetaldehyde photocat-alytic degradation can be assumed as follows (Sauer and Ollis,1996):

However, in the studied system only trace amounts offormaldehyde were detected and no formic acid was present

The degradation of acetaldehyde by the samples pre-pared on smooth or sandblasted glasses with the carbon andnitrogen doped TiO2 can be compared in Fig. 9. For this con-taminant, again the degradation by samples prepared with thecommercial photocatalytic solutions is neglected comparedwith the carbon and nitrogen doped TiO2.
In addition to the experimental results shown in Fig. 9,extra and longer tests were performed employing the sand-blasted samples in order to evaluate the catalysts deactivation.After more than 10 h of reaction, the acetaldehyde degradationremained nearly constant.
Table 3 also reports the acetaldehyde conversion calculatedaccording to Eq. (8) (with i = Acet) as well as the acetaldehydetotal oxidation or mineralization (XMin,Acet) that takes intoaccount the formation of intermediates, calculated as:

Table 5 shows the acetaldehyde average reaction rates, andthe apparent photonic and true quantum efficiencies.
Employing this contaminant, again the best de-pollutioncapability is observed for the TiO2-C deposited on smoothglass, reaching almost 100% of conversion (Table 3). In this

at pH 1 were tested. As discussed before, the amount of cata-lyst on this support was smaller, leading to a lower radiationabsorption and therefore to a reduced acetaldehyde conver-sion.
In the same way that for the NOx pollutant, the acetalde-hyde conversion, reaction rate and photonic efficiency presentthe same trend if all samples are compared. However, the truequantum efficiency for the TiO2-C-4L sample decreases sig-nificantly and its value becomes lower than for the rest of thesamples. This last result is because an almost complete con-version was reached for the organic contaminant under theused operating conditions. In other words, as the acetalde-hyde is consumed before is getting out of the reactor, for theTiO2-C sample on smooth glass the effective catalyst reactingarea is lower. Notice that for the calculation of the reactionrate the same area of 10 × 20 cm2 was taken into account forall samples; consequently, the average reaction rate for TiO2-C catalyst was underestimated leading to a lower quantumefficiency value.
Comparing the two reacting systems, the acetaldehydeconversion and reaction rate are significantly higher thanthe NOx conversion using the smooth glass support. How-ever, the acetaldehyde degradation for the nitrogen dopedTiO2 is exceeding the NOx degradation by only a factor of 1.7and 1.9 considering the apparent photonic and true quantumefficiencies respectively. On the contrary, for the case of thecarbon doped TiO2, the apparent photonic and true quantumefficiencies for the NOx degradation is 1.6 and 1.5 respec-tively higher than for the acetaldehyde degradation due to,as mentioned before, the reaction rate for this sample wasundervalued.
Anyhow, the true quantum and apparent photonic effi-ciencies for both reacting systems become more comparablethan the respective reaction rates and conversions since theincident radiation flux in the acetaldehyde reacting system ishigher than for the NOx degradation.
A correlation between the obtained results for the photo-catalytic performance and the fraction of energy absorbed bythe immobilized TiO2 powders can be observed. At the sametime that the TiO2-C absorbs about 32% more energy thanTiO2-N on smooth borosilicate glass, it could convert 66% moreNOx. On the other hand, using the sandblasted glasses, TiO2-C also absorbs 20% more radiation than TiO2-N and coulddegrade 37% more acetaldehyde. One of the reasons of thebetter performance of TiO2-C can be attributed to its higherspecific surface. However, it is worth to mention that other
photocatalyst characteristics not studied here can influenceits performance.ntum efficiencies for acetaldehyde degradation.

. Conclusions
he performance of different commercial modified TiO2
hotocatalysts was assessed under visible light for theirpplication for air decontamination. Two representative airollutants, nitrogen oxide and acetaldehyde, were success-ully degraded for two of the four catalyst tested, the carbonnd nitrogen doped TiO2 powders.
The radiation absorption fraction of the immobilized cata-ysts was calculated from a radiation flux balance model andsing the experimental values of diffuse reflectance and dif-
use transmittance measurements.The de-polluting performance of the selected catalysts for
oth inorganic and organic reacting systems was evaluatedalculating the apparent photonic and the true quantum effi-iencies. A correlation between the photocatalytic pollutantsegradation and the immobilized TiO2 optical properties waslso found. These results are useful to appraise which TiO2
ill be more efficient for a full scale air decontamination pro-ess under indoor conditions. Particularly, under the testedperating conditions employed in the present work, the car-on modified photocatalyst promises a better performance for
real application.
