Born March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands
Son of a minister
Fails as art dealer-doesn’t like art as commodity
Also fails being a religious missionary
Marriage proposal(s) turned down
Returns home to live with his parents
Moves to Brussels and studies at Royal Academy of Art
Starts painting in his late twenties
Uses earth tone colors
Moves to Paris in 1886 & discovers Impressionists– painters who use bright colors, a lot of light, and small brush strokes

Moves to south France (Arles)
Begins to use bright beautiful colors & light
Creates some of most famous works as décor for his “Yellow House”
His style is unique- swirls, spirals, bold colors, movement

He painted many self-
portraits.
Van Gogh loved to paint
sunflowers!
Last paintings are turbulent and intense
Van Gogh died in July 1890 at the age of 37
