DAMODAR RIVER Damodar river flows across the Indian States of West Bengal and Jharkhand. In some local languages, the river is called Dhamuda, ‘damu’ means sacred and ‘da’ means water. Once upon a time, the river was know as Bengal’s Sorrow due to its ravaging floods in the plains of West Bengal. Now, it is under control due to the construction of several dams across the river. The river is 563 kms long and has a number of tributaries and sub-tributaries. It originates in the Chhotanagpur hills in Bihar and flows through one of the richest mineral belts in the world before draining into the Hooghly river in Calcutta. Many thermal power plants and mining factories dot the valley along the Damodar river. The Damodar valley spans about 9357 square miles including districts such as Ramgarh in Jharkhand and Bardhaman in West Bengal.
The Ramgarh and the Bardhaman districts are home to many holy places. Rajrappa is a waterfall and a Hindu pilgrimage center in the Ramgarh district. It attracts about 3000 people daily and is home to the Chhinnamasta temple where the headless deity of goddess Chhinnamasta stands on the body of Kamadeva and Rati in a lotus bed. The Bardhaman district of the Damodar valley has many holy places such as the 108 Shiva Lingam temples built in 1788 and the Sabarmangala temple which is said to contain the remnants of Sati’s body. Here, a week long festival is celebrated on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri. The Konkaleshwari Kali mandir is also situated here. Here, the statue of goddess Kali is made of stone and the temple is said to be 200 years old and is revered as the sacred shrine of the Shakti sect of Hinduism.
