History of Okinawan Kenpo
Okinawan Kenpo is a term that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. It is often used as a generic term to describe all of the Okinawan Karate styles. During the early 1950's, this term came into use to describe a particular style, the karate being taught by Master Shigeru Nakamura.
Master Nakamura was born on Jan. 20, 1894. His karate training started while he was attending Icchu Middle School in Shuri. It was here that both Kanryo Higashionna (1845-1915) and Chomo Hanashiro (1830-1945) were karate instructors. Yasutune Itosu (1830-1915) as well as Kentsu Yabu (1863-1937) also made visits to the school. Upon graduation from middle school, Nakamura Sensei returned to Nago City where he continued his training under Shinkichi Kunioshi. In 1953, Nakamura Sensei opened his own dojo in Nago City where he called his form of karate “Okinawan Kenpo;” he became famous for his introduction of “bogu gear,” protective equipment permitting full-contact sparring.
Seikichi Odo, whose name means "world walker" in Japanese, was born in Okinawan
in 1923. Of samurai descent, he was small in stature and introverted as a youth, making him the target of much teasing and practical jokes from older boys. At age 9, Odo began martial arts training in Judo but found this style to be ill suited to his particular tastes. At age 13, Odo met Koho Kuba of Kawasald, Okinawa. Kuba Sensei taught Odo the art of Okinawan-te. At the age of 20, Odo began to study Okinawan Kobudo. He was soon to fall in love with the weapons arts, and he studied them voraciously to ensure the preservation of the old ways. Over time, Odo's kobudo instructors included Mitsuo Kakazu, Kenko Nakaima, Matayoshi, and Seike Toma, some of the leading practitioners in Okinawa At 23, Odo began to study karate under Nakamura Sensei. Odo studied kobudo with Mitsuo Kakazu and karate and kobudo with Seike Toma, who was a senior student of Chotoku Kyan (1880-1945). However, Odo Sensei Master Nakamura to have been his primary instructor and mentor. It was during his studies with Master Nakamura that Nakamura Sensei asked Odo to incorporate kobudo with Nakamura’s own karate teachings.
During the last few years of Nakamura’s life, Odo began to undertake the teaching
responsibilities of the dojo. Sensei Odo began to fully incorporate kobudo training with the Okinawan Kenpo Karate system in the mid 1970’s. In July of 1983, Master Odo restructured the Okinawan Kenpo Karate-Kobudo Association, renaming it the Okinawan Kenpo Karate Kobudo Federation. Master Odo’s OKKKF teaches a total of 48 katas: 18 open hand forms, and 30 weapons katas. In October of 1997, OKKKF was renamed RYUKYU HON KENPO KOBUJUTSU FEDERATION, of which DeValentino Sensei (Sensei Dave’s instructor) retired as technical advisor in 1998, continuing as a licensed instructor and preserving the ancient arts through DeValentino Shudokan Schools International.

DOJO ETIQUETTE A bow is a sign of respect. Always execute a standing bow when entering and leaving the dojo. If you are in the dojo, and Sensei Dave or another black belt enters the dojo, the senior kyu (color belt) will call out, “Sensei ni mawate” (turn toward sensei), followed by “Sensei ni rei.” All students will then come to attention and bow. Always address black belts, (showing respect for their rank) and adults, (showing respect for their age), with "Yes Sir/Ma’am" and "No Sir/Ma’am." Your gi (uniform) is a symbol of the way you feel about yourself and karate. It should always be kept clean and in good condition. You should only wear your gi in the dojo, or perhaps in transit to the dojo; you should never wear your obi (belt) outside of the dojo. It is a symbol of your achievements, and should be treated with respect. It should never fall to the floor or be washed. When lining up to begin class, black belts will line up in parallel lines by dan (black belt) ranks. All kyu ranks will form a line behind and parallel to the shodan (black belt) line. Kyu ranks should line up from right to left in kyu order, starting with 1st degree brown belts, and descending to white belts. Once students are in line, the senior instructor will either initiate formal kneeling bows (seiza) or informal standing bows (tachi rei). First the instructor will recite, "shome ni rei," which initiates a bow to the dojo. Second, if the sensei is present, "sensei ni rei" will be recited, initiating a bow for the Sensei of the school. Thirdly, the instructor will say "senpai ni rei," and a bow will be executed for the black belts, and finally the instructor will say “otaga ni rei," and everyone will bow, showing respect for their fellow classmates. At the end of class, the same procedure of bows will be repeated.
SPARRING (Kumite) Sparring (kumite) is not only a part of our curriculum, but it is also a part of traditional karate. This is the time to practice all of the kihons you have learned, and it is an opportunity to overcome any fear or anxiety you may have about kumite as well. Below is a list of rules you must follow during kumite:
1. All students must wear protective gear including: headgear, hand pads, foot pads, mouth piece, and cup (male). We usually have a limited amount of extra sparring gear in the dojo; however, all students are highly encouraged to purchase their own sparring gear.
2. All strikes are to be controlled and focused. (Remember, we are here to work with and learn from each other—not to injure our fellow karate-ka).
3. Strikes are to the mid section only for ranks below green belt. 4. Green, brown, and black belt students may strike to the head however the strike MUST be
controlled, pulled, and focused, and advanced students may never use head strikes against non-advanced students.
5. Foot sweeps are allowed for all ranks. 6. Kumite rules vary from tournament to tournament. Remember that the rules that apply in the
dojo may not necessarily be the same as those you must adhere to in competition.
