Mona Lisa Activity: Making connections to previous

learning across the grades and curriculum. What do these Mona Lisa’s say to you?How do they make you feel? What devices did each artist use to convey a message?

If you were an illustrator what would you have to

think about?

How illustrators or artists use SIZE to communicate

messages or meaning to us?

What does this image show or tell us?.

We will look at 2 images and discuss what is shown in each and then compare the messages in the two.

What does this image tell us?

What has the illustrator communicated by making the change?.

Image taken from ‘Where’s my Teddy?” by Jez Alborough            What do you see?

What is the illustrator/artist trying to tell you through the device  size?1.

How do you know? .

Body Language and Gestures

Body language and gestures can show us how a character is feeling, what their personality is like or can tell us how to react. It can express a feeling, mood or behaviour.

What do you think we are trying to tell you in the poses?

COLOUR as a device.Anna: the bear is dead or someone is because red is like bloodChristopher: bear could be hurt because it redErin: the bear is mad- seeing redJeong Seo: Anger- red

Angelina: energetic because of the all the dabs of colourTheo: a happy ending and someone is in loveTristan: happy because of the bright coloursAnna: someone is feeling excited or happyMiss Tracy- happiness is not always neat and tidy

Artists use various devices to portray emotion and character.• Illustrators make choices to create emotions and meaning

• The choice of medium by the illustrator can provide the readers with clues to the message or purpose of the text: i.e. photos likely to be non-fiction

• Illustrators uses visual devices to influence the readers: artistic style, colour, composition, medium, size and detail
